Partnered Status And Substance Misuse In Sgm, Carli Giacopelli, Jordan Suarez, Noella Ginolfi Jan 2024

Partnered Status And Substance Misuse In Sgm, Carli Giacopelli, Jordan Suarez, Noella Ginolfi

Student Research Design & Innovation Symposium

The purpose of this research project is to examine the relationship between partner status and substance misuse. We believe that single persons have a higher likelihood of substance misuse compared to other relationship status. We focused specifically on binge drinking, cannabis misuse, and cigarette smoking. The partner status that we focus on are no partner (single), causal, monogamy, consensual non-monogamy, and non-consensual monogamy. The goal of this study is to see the association between different relationship statuses and different kinds of substance misuse, using a large nationwide sample of sexual and gender minority persons.

Heroin Use In The Sgm Community, Zoe Savage, Angelia Bowers, Ryan Cassar, Olivia Phelps Jan 2024

Heroin Use In The Sgm Community, Zoe Savage, Angelia Bowers, Ryan Cassar, Olivia Phelps

Student Research Design & Innovation Symposium

The heroin epidemic continues to rip through the United States, drug overdose statistically being the leading cause of death among those under age 50 in 2018. We aim to focus our research on Sexual and Gender Minorities. In the U.S., many individuals initiate the use of some substances during adolescence. However, youth with SGM identities demonstrate disparities in substance use across multiple substances. The purpose of this study is to examine the ongoing prevalence of heroin usage among SGM communities and what can be done to provide adequate resources for those seeking treatment. Another idea for comparison our research hopes …

Mental Health Clinicians In Law Enforcement, Gillian Plude Jan 2024

Mental Health Clinicians In Law Enforcement, Gillian Plude

Student Research Design & Innovation Symposium

Mental health clinicians are needed in the law enforcement field to further prevent the wrongful incarceration of those enduring crises. More often than not, when officers have arrived on the scene of a 911 call, the individual in question has put themselves or others in danger due to an altered mental state. While this could be attributed to drug usage, addiction also falls under the umbrella of a mental disorder, and the incarceration of those with this issue does nothing to resolve the problem at hand. Furthermore, we have seen increased rates of overpopulation in our prison system for years, …

Major areas of philosophy covered here are Ethics, Epistemology, Metaphysics, Philosophy of Religion, Ethics, Sociopolitical Philosophy, and finally, Aesthetics.

Umm Al-Jimāl Site Management Plan, Dr. Elizabeth Osinga, Mrs. Jenna De Vries Morton Jan 2024

Umm Al-Jimāl Site Management Plan, Dr. Elizabeth Osinga, Mrs. Jenna De Vries Morton

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

Umm Al-Jimāl is an archaeologist’s dream. Jagged black basalt ruins rise above the skyline. Over 170 buildings in various states of repair grouped into neighborhoods. A tower encircled by inscriptions, an entry gate, several architecturally classic churches. Inscriptions with names and dates beginning in the Nabataean period and continuing through the Early Islamic—there are even modern names carved into some of the lintels, representing the last local community who lived in the ruins in the 21st century. The site presents the tangible remains of the many generations who lived through centuries of differing imperial rule, religious change, and socio-economic shifts. …

The purpose of this study was to examine the association of individual variables, workplace characteristics, and physical activity participation with occupational distress levels among Catholic priests. A 22-question survey consisting of a demographic questionnaire, the Clergy Occupational Distress Index, and the International Physical Activity Questionnaire was employed to collect individual variables, workplace characteristics, physical activity participation, and occupational distress levels of Catholic priests from the Eastern seaboard of the United States. Regression analyses showed that …

The Best Laid Plans: Case Studies Of The Loss Of Four Early (1996-2003) Digital Humanities Websites, Drew E. Vandecreek Jan 2024

The Best Laid Plans: Case Studies Of The Loss Of Four Early (1996-2003) Digital Humanities Websites, Drew E. Vandecreek

Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship

This study examines factors contributing to the loss of four grant funded, free use digital humanities websites funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities' Education Development and Demonstration Program, 1996-2003: Decision Point! at Auburn University, Hawthorne in Salem at North Shore Community College (Danvers, MA), the New Deal Network at the Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt Institute (Hyde Park, NY), and River Web at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The evidence shows that website loss did not occur suddenly. In all four cases, organizations that accepted program funds to create online materials ultimately failed to develop or continue procedures …

Shame And History, Bennett B. Gilbert Jan 2024

Shame And History, Bennett B. Gilbert

University Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

If history—our past, the sum of our thoughts, passions, and deeds—is so pervasive, influential, and meaningful, why then do we lose sight of it? Why do we not gain good values from it? And if it is part of our existential core, why then do we so often fail to ravel it into our deliberations?

I propose that very often and to a great degree it is shame that separates us from history. Shame: garrulous, compulsive, intense, omnivorous. A shamed person pushes away the experiences that shame her, thus cutting off the past.

“Muchakang Pangkalawakan”: Queering Engagements With Bakla Of The Philippine Tropics, Artemio P. Millo Jan 2024

“Muchakang Pangkalawakan”: Queering Engagements With Bakla Of The Philippine Tropics, Artemio P. Millo

Sociology & Anthropology Department Faculty Publications

The performance of participants in the Miss Gay Muchakang Pangkalawan [Miss Ugly Gay Universe] in Quiapo, Manila, reflects characteristics of the flamboyant and effeminate bakla. However, these stereotypical depictions may not always be consistent with how participants view themselves. This study argues that an introspective understanding of how participants make sense of their identity work engendered by ever-turning tropes reveals slippages that can liberate them from existing oppressive stereotypes. By utilizing personal narrative and ethnographic reflexivity, this study deconstructs the participants’ performances, revealing identity-making that may reinforce or resist dominant discourses on the bakla under which these narratives are …

The Mediation Of Critical Themes Of Motherhood Studies In Storytelling: The Case Of The Girl Who Drank The Moon, Catalina Millán Scheiding Jan 2024

The Mediation Of Critical Themes Of Motherhood Studies In Storytelling: The Case Of The Girl Who Drank The Moon, Catalina Millán Scheiding

Faculty Works

By contemplating the emotional and intellectual link between the reader and the book, this article considers how a contemporary text might respond to current motherhood studies’ issues, and how these studies are mediated to be considered appropriate for an audience of young readers. A psychosocial research strategy is used, through a feminist theoretical framework, to analyze how the young adult novel The Girl Who Drank the Moon incorporates key ideas of motherhood studies through characters’ agency and the storytelling arch. Motherhood is represented as an institution, an individual identity and an emotional experience, and the novel offers the young reader …

Portraying Women In Eugene O’Neill Plays: How Life Affects Art And How Art Is Made Manifest, Charity M. Turley Jan 2024

Portraying Women In Eugene O’Neill Plays: How Life Affects Art And How Art Is Made Manifest, Charity M. Turley

Senior Honors Theses

Throughout his career, Eugene O’Neill wrote plays with strong and compelling female characters which have earned him much recognition. O’Neill’s ability to perceivably tap into a humans’ psyche and portray the deep desires of humanity was done to an extent rarely portrayed on the stage before; especially giving such complex characteristics to women, which was unconventional and unexpected for his time. Many have asked, therefore, what led O’Neill to write women as boldly as he did? It is known that his formative familial and romantic relationships were plagued by hardship, even so, he admitted to writing many of his characters …

Native American faculty in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (NAF-STEM) disciplines are historically underrepresented. Creating inclusive academia for Indigenous people that typically live and thrive in rural communities requires insights into their personal, relational, and collective experiences. This study was guided by the Six Rs: relationship, respect, responsibility, relevance, representation, and reciprocity, and was informed by Indigenous Research Methodologies. Twelve NAF-STEM from tribal colleges and non-tribal institutions were asked to share their perspectives and experiences in seven Research Circles. NAF-STEM joined sequential hybrid workshops over seven weeks on how to conduct qualitative data analysis. Authors conducted analysis on the transcripts …

Clothing Design Solutions For Children With Developmental Disabilities: A Scoping Review Protocol, Nagaveni N. Nayak, Shristi Shakya, Nachiket Gudi, Sonia Khurana, Sivakumar Gopalakrishnan, Veena Rao, Bhamini Krishna Rao

Rehabilitation Sciences Faculty Publications

Children with Developmental Disabilities (DD) often face significant challenges in performing dressing task, fundamental activities of daily living. Inability to accomplish this task independently significantly impacts participation in social and recreational activities, affecting Quality of Life (QoL). Additionally, burden on caregivers increases which in turn leads to stress and burnout. Addressing dressing-related challenges through innovative clothing designs enhances self-independence, alleviate caregiver burden, and improve QoL. However, studies published in this focused area are quite heterogeneous resulting in lack of comprehensive understanding of different clothing solutions that exist for children with DD. Therefore, this scoping review is undertaken to map clothing …

Breathing Nietzsche’S Atmospheres, Gary Shapiro Jan 2024

Breathing Nietzsche’S Atmospheres, Gary Shapiro

Philosophy Faculty Publications

This essay contextualizes the themes of breath and atmosphere in Nietzsche’s thinking, reading them in relation to certain contemporary crises and theories. Climate change and airborne pandemic challenge the tendency to position breath and atmosphere as life’s unthought background. Luce Irigaray’s phenomenological-feminist claim that Western philosophy has forgotten breath and James Nestor’s comprehensive investigation of medical, scientific, and disciplinary respiratory research programs provide contrasting frameworks for clarifying Nietzsche’s emphasis on breath as crucial to embodied human life. Atmospheric surround – taken in a spectrum of interrelated senses, meteorological to affective – is breath’s correlative. Nietzsche’s insistence on life’s irreducible atmospheric …

A review of Adrian Wisnicki’s One More Voice.

Adrian Wisnicki's One More Voice website, accessible at https://onemorevoice.org/, is a valuable resource for scholars and students of digital humanities, particularly those interested in African studies. The website is designed to facilitate the exploration and analysis of texts related to African history and literature. As part of a digital humanities course in the spring of 2023, I had the opportunity to engage with the website, which serves both as a repository of information and as a platform for educational activities, such as text analysis and website creation. An Early Byzantine Ecclesiastical Complex At Ashdod-Yam: Correlating Geophysical Prospection With Excavated Remains, Yaniv Darvasi, Alexander Fantalkin, Paul Brindza, Amotz Agnon

Physics Faculty Publications

In this study we show the successful deployment of Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) together with Electrical Resistivity Surveys (ERS) in guiding the archeological excavations at Ashdod-Yam (southern coast of Israel). This approach enabled the precise identification of excavation targets relating to an Early Byzantine ecclesiastical complex located in a residential neighborhood of the modern city of Ashdod. Applied over the course of five years, the combined use of GPR and ERS, interspersed with phases of archeological excavation, not only facilitated an efficient exploration but also ensured the preservation of valuable historical structures. The geophysical data, corroborated by drone images of …

Disability Untheorized: Critiques Of Eugenics, Then And Now, Maren Linett Jan 2024

Disability Untheorized: Critiques Of Eugenics, Then And Now, Maren Linett

Department of English Faculty Publications

Critiques of Anglo-American eugenics from the turn of the twentieth century through today demonstrate that the people swept up by the colossal eugenic broom were not biologically “unfit” without questioning either the notion of biological inferiority itself or the “menace” eugenicists saw in disability. They therefore imply that what was wrong with eugenics was its inaccuracy—that it was only ethically problematic because it did not correctly identify “unfit” people. Such critiques, while offering social models of race, poverty, criminality, and/or gender, leave disability untheorized and neglect the rights of disabled people.

Survivor-Shaped Specters And Gaps, Seo-Young J. Chu Jan 2024

Survivor-Shaped Specters And Gaps, Seo-Young J. Chu

Publications and Research

...survivors are disappearing from academia. Our schools, our syllabi, our classrooms, our bibliographies, our campuses, our research labs, our thesis committees, our libraries, our conference panels, our departments, our programs, and our monographs are riddled through and through with survivor-shaped gaps. Each gap is a place in academia where someone has gone missing due to bullying, harassment, retaliation, predation, sexual assault, mobbing, and/or other abuses of power. Some of these gaps are shaped like allies who have left academia due to moral injury. Not every gap, moreover, is shaped like a survivor. Not every victim survives.
