Dystopian Young Adult Literature As Waypoints To Censorship Across Time And Space, Shelby Boehm, Savannah Bean Jan 2024

Dystopian Young Adult Literature As Waypoints To Censorship Across Time And Space, Shelby Boehm, Savannah Bean

Faculty Publications – English

We advocate for the reading of young adult literature (YAL) as a means for justice-oriented education, and we also recognize how the recent surge in challenges to youth-centered texts in the U.S. attempts to limit such work in classrooms. In response, we wondered about the ways in which YAL offers pathways for critically framing and situating global concerns, such as censorship, in time and space as a means of entering public conversations on issues. In this article, we offer waypoints as a critical reading framework for approaching sociopolitical issues in YAL as gateways for shifts in perspectives, orientations, and actions …

Structure, Status, And Span: Gender Differences In Co-Authorship Networks Across 16 Region-Subject Pairs (2009–2013), Kjersten Bunker Whittington, Molly M. King, Isabella Cingolani Jan 2024

Structure, Status, And Span: Gender Differences In Co-Authorship Networks Across 16 Region-Subject Pairs (2009–2013), Kjersten Bunker Whittington, Molly M. King, Isabella Cingolani

Sociology

Global and team science approaches are on the rise, as is attention to the network underpinnings of gender disparities in scientific collaboration. Many network studies of men’s and women’s collaboration rely on bounded case studies of single disciplines and/or single countries and limited measures related to the collaborative process. We deploy network analysis on the scholarly database Scopus to gain insight into gender inequity across regions and subject areas and to better understand contextual underpinnings of stagnancy. Using a dataset of over 1.2 million authors and 144 million collaborative relationships, we capture international and unbounded co-authorship networks that include intra- …

Review Of The Movement For Black Lives: Philosophical Perspectives, Daniel Fryer Jan 2024

Review Of The Movement For Black Lives: Philosophical Perspectives, Daniel Fryer

Reviews

Philosophy gets a bad rap when it comes to its engagement with the world’s most pressing social problems. Recall that famous epigrammatic final note from Karl Marx’s Theses on Feuerbach: “The philosophers have only interpreted the world, in various ways; the point, however, is to change it.” It may be tempting to take this line as a call to substitute studious reasoning for an “act first, think later” strategy. But that doesn’t seem to be Marx’s intention. Rather than being a call for “blind activism” that rejects “rational dialogue, discourse, or discussion,” Marx is better read as challenging philosophy to …

Genotype Analysis Of Ppcsld3/4/5/8 Ko Mutants, Gabrielle Cournoyer, Hannah Porter Jan 2024

Genotype Analysis Of Ppcsld3/4/5/8 Ko Mutants, Gabrielle Cournoyer, Hannah Porter

Student Research Design & Innovation Symposium

The moss Physcomitrella patens is an attractive model organism, due to its small genome and dominant haploid phase. P. patens has eight genes that form a family known as the Cellulose Synthase-Like Ds (CSLDs). A previous study using global knockdown of the entire PpCSLD family by RNA interference (RNAi) showed a decrease in protonemal tip growth, indicating that PpCSLDs play a role in protometal growth. In order to study the roles of specific CSLDs in P. patens development, potential quadruple KO mutants for PpCSLD3/4/5/8? were generated by CRISPR/Cas9 mutagenesis. The goal of this project was to screen potential ppcsld3/4/5/8? KO …

Applying Economic Principles In Criminal Justice, John Weeks Jan 2024

Applying Economic Principles In Criminal Justice, John Weeks

Student Research Design & Innovation Symposium

Legalistic and sociological perspectives are two of the views used in criminal justice policy evaluation. This project seeks to address crime differently, through an economic lens. The economic principle of scarcity and marginal analysis will be key factors in this research to showcase how the desires of society are unsustainable with our finite resources, thus leading to criminal behavior. The focus of this project identifies crime as an economic factor of society, impacting financial stability and markets. Finding sustainable economic measures to address crime is a key feature in our fight for a more peaceful society.

Queering The Troubled Tropics In Panx Solajes’ Post-Haiyan Short Films, Ian Harvey A. Claros Jan 2024

Queering The Troubled Tropics In Panx Solajes’ Post-Haiyan Short Films, Ian Harvey A. Claros

Filipino Faculty Publications

This article apprehends a precarious moment when the queer and the tropics coincide to form a new fabric of sensing in this age of climate crisis. Queer and tropics are intimate, not only because both embody their inherent openness and fluidity, but also because each is woven closely by the corollary contradictions that besiege them, such as heteronormativity, capitalism, and environmental degradation. Within such an intersecting framework, this study critically engages with a selection of three works by the queer Filipino filmmaker Panx Solajes who attentively observes the aftermath of Typhoon Haiyan (locally called Yolanda) in the Philippines, a tropical …

“The Direful Spectacle Of The Wrack”: Teaching Against Colonialism Through Shipwrecks And Shakespeare, Sara A. Rich Jan 2024

“The Direful Spectacle Of The Wrack”: Teaching Against Colonialism Through Shipwrecks And Shakespeare, Sara A. Rich

Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive

It has become increasingly apparent that anti-colonial and anti-racist pedagogies are necessary in higher education classrooms, and honors education as an experimental zone is an ideal place to test ideas that can be taken into the wider university community. Honors professors epitomize the teacher-scholar model, and this paper presents a six-year trajectory of anti-colonial pedagogy coupled with original interdisciplinary research in the social sciences, arts, and humanities. Bringing canonical Shakespeare into conversation with historical shipwrecks and their aftermath, students learn how The Tempest was written at a pivotal point in history, coincidentally situated in the same year as the earliest …

Marginalized First-Time Honors Students Explain The Impact Of Tracking Labels, Trina Sotirakopulos Jan 2024

Marginalized First-Time Honors Students Explain The Impact Of Tracking Labels, Trina Sotirakopulos

Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive

Many of the variables that determine college admission are beyond a student’s control, including the academic track they were assigned as early as primary school, a practice often referred to as “ability grouping” or constructing “skills-homogeneous” classes. Even in higher education, students feel the effects of unequal sorting and sifting from tracking. The purpose of this study was to learn from marginalized community college students placed in low- and middle-track courses in high school how taking honors courses for the first time shaped their perceptions of their identities. Data were gathered from a single cohort at a midwestern community college …

154 East Chicago Blvd And Downtown Tecumseh, Mi, Lisa Powell

Historic Preservation Final Projects

The downtown commercial building at 154 East Chicago Blvd in Tecumseh, MI represents the typical building style of the late 1800s. It reflects the building styles and materials common to the area using such as fired brick and limestone, decorative cast iron columns and galvanized metal cornice, all typical in the Midwest in the late 19th century. This project analyzes how this commercial building has adapted to meet the needs of a small town in Tecumseh, Michigan, in southeast lower Michigan.

On The Ordinariness Of Murdering The Black Psyque And Flesh: Antiblackness In Educational Policy And Practice In Brazil, Colombia And Ecuador, Éllen Daiane Cintra, Mauri Balanta Jaramillo, Ethan Johnson

Black Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

This paper seeks to understand how anti-blackness has manifested in Brazilian, Colombian and Ecuadorian education based on analyzes of the education of ethnic-racial relations in these three countries. We start from the recognition of dynamics of violence that position Black people as socially dead (PATTERSON, 1982) in the afterlife of slavery (HARTMAN, 2007). Next, we analyze aspects of education and legal apparatus regarding ethnic-racial relations within education. We conclude that the lens of antiblackness (SHARPE, 2016; WILDERSON, 2010; VARGAS, 2020) in education advances analysis of the antagonistic and paradigmatic relationship that positions Black people as a problem and uneducable (DUMAS, …

"The Feminist Coven Did It": Nigerian Women's Feminist Leadership And Coalition Against Police Brutality During The 2020 #Endsars Protests, Bright Alozie Jan 2024

"The Feminist Coven Did It": Nigerian Women's Feminist Leadership And Coalition Against Police Brutality During The 2020 #Endsars Protests, Bright Alozie

Black Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

The 2020 #EndSARS protest—a movement against police brutality and state violence in Nigeria—is an excellent locale for the historical study of African women’s activism and contributions to social movements. Young Nigerian women actively spearheaded this movement. Employing oral history methods, social media, and other primary sources, I place these women at the center of the narratives surrounding the #EndSARS protest. Their exceptional leadership and coordination contributed to the success of the most extensive youth-led protests in Nigeria’s contemporary history. In locating their individual and collective activism, I argue that history provided the roadmap for how they did effective activism since …

Translational Neuroscience Contributes To Understanding Neurodevelopmental Outcomes Of Dostoyevsky's "Brothers Karamazov" With Treatment Implications, Stephen I. Deutsch, Jessica A. Burket, Jeffrey Elikan Jd, David R. Spiegel Jan 2024

Translational Neuroscience Contributes To Understanding Neurodevelopmental Outcomes Of Dostoyevsky's "Brothers Karamazov" With Treatment Implications, Stephen I. Deutsch, Jessica A. Burket, Jeffrey Elikan Jd, David R. Spiegel

Department Psychiatry & Behavioral Science Faculty Publications

Dostoyevsky's novels raise profound ethical, moral, philosophical and theological issues and, as a result, both he and his novels serve as fertile subjects of scholarly inquiry across a variety of academic disciplines. In particular, major characters in "The Brothers Karamazov" lend themselves to classical psychodynamic formulations, such as the influence of adverse childhood experiences on adult social and occupational outcomes, which in the case of Dmitry, the eldest son of Fyodor Pavlovich Karamazov, are considered in exquisitely fine detail. Prosecutor and defense attorney provide differing interpretations of how early traumas, largely due to paternal neglect and abuse, affected Dmitry's adult …

Ft-Ir: Detecting Microplastics In Drinking Water, Samuel Stevens Jan 2024

Ft-Ir: Detecting Microplastics In Drinking Water, Samuel Stevens

Student Research Design & Innovation Symposium

Microplastics contamination is a growing worldwide concern as its impacts are newly being studied. My interest lies in microplastic contamination across various water sources in Alaskan communities. Because of the isolated nature of Alaskan cities, the source of their drinking water varies from private well water, to municipal water, as well as water brought in via trucks. Because of these different origins and methods, the potential for microplastic contamination is inconsistent among communities. Water brought via trucks is most often stored in plastic containers for transport as well as use. As students and researchers at Alaska Pacific University, we embarked …

Government Funded Sex Education And Its Impact, Emma Dugan Jan 2024

Government Funded Sex Education And Its Impact, Emma Dugan

Student Research Design & Innovation Symposium

Since the 1900s, the United States has been arguing the true manner of sex education: moral rights or providing students with proper education. In the 1960s, abstinence-only education was added to education and has been federally funded for decades, pushing heterosexual, monogamous, marital relationships as the norm. The purpose of this project was to look at government-funded abstinence education and its impact on the American population and compare that with comprehensive education. This research covers topics such as how funding was being supplied and what it supported, and how abstinence education impacted American youth, perpetuated stereotypes, and created room for …

Sunnyside Packaging, Julia Tyras Jan 2024

Sunnyside Packaging, Julia Tyras

Student Research Design & Innovation Symposium

Sunnyside Farms Packaging was a comprehensive design project aimed at designing the visual identity and packaging for a range of dairy products, including milk, eggs, and other dairy items. The objective was to create a cohesive and appealing packaging design for a farm-to-table brand that not only communicated the brand's commitment to quality, but also stood out on store shelves. The project began with extensive market research to understand consumer preferences, industry trends, and competitor packaging strategies. I then crafted a versatile and visually engaging packaging concept, incorporating elements that conveyed freshness, sustainability, and the wholesome nature of Sunnyside Farms …

Who Can You Count On? Banking While Female: Money, Community, And Self-Help, Leena Haider

Gaines Fellow Senior Theses

This ethnohistorical study explores how women’s creation and participation in financial systems allow them to find the economic prosperity and build community ties which they are entitled to. Because when facts or figures may not appeal to everyone, stories can. This paper is divided into four sections: In the first section, "Contextual Background," I delve into the historical and anthropological context of ROSCAs, exploring their origins, cultural significance, and economic functions across diverse societies in the Global South, before focusing on the diasporic usage of ROSCAs among immigrant communities. The second section, "Portraits of Women from Oral Histories," presents written …

Differentially Unwell: On Mimi Khúc's "Dear Elia", Seo-Young J. Chu Jan 2024

Differentially Unwell: On Mimi Khúc's "Dear Elia", Seo-Young J. Chu

Publications and Research

[...] Inviting readers to reclaim the stigma of unwellness and collectively to "tend to our unwellness, together," Khúc approaches unwellness as a crucial resource for subverting the "wellness and unwellness" dichotomy entirely. After all, the opposite of "wellness" is not "unwellness"; the opposite of "wellness" does not exist. The opposition itself is an artificial framework, one that reductively harms more than it dialogically helps. We need to move away from these simplistic dualisms, Khúc suggests, and towards more generous, trauma-informed epistemologies. [...]

Flood Resiliency Planning: Historical Analysis And Youth Participation In Monongalia County, Wv, Josephine Q. Kemp-Rye, Jack P. Van Dusen, Kennedy Lawson

Undergraduate Scholarship

Flooding is a prevalent threat to community wellbeing, particularly in West Virginia where the mountainous topography and narrow valleys create perfect conditions for flood water to accumulate. To more deeply understand how hazards, such as flood events, become disastrous, we must consider not only the environmental/physical aspects, but also political, economic, and social dimensions. Thinking holistically about flood vulnerability acknowledges the influence of economic positioning, inadequate policies, industrial legacies, etc. which result in varied vulnerabilities to hazards within communities. The insights, knowledge, and experiences of local individuals and communities remain absent from domain top-down approaches to flood preparation. In an …

The Message Behind The Aesthetic: Intersections Of Class And Sexuality In Oscar Wilde's The Picture Of Dorian Gray, Matthew J. Milotakis Jan 2024

The Message Behind The Aesthetic: Intersections Of Class And Sexuality In Oscar Wilde's The Picture Of Dorian Gray, Matthew J. Milotakis

English Theses

Oscar Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray (1891) follows the life of a doomed high-class gay man named Dorian while revealing a discussion of art and the imitation of life itself. This paper reveals the parallels between characters like Dorian and Lord Henry's life to Wilde himself and how they all move through society as high-class gay men. The intersectionality of both identities provides a social commentary on societal policing, compulsory heterosexuality, and the villainization of queerness through the lives of men who lived in 19th-century England with challenges like the Criminal Amendment Act of 1885 and laws against sodomy. …
