College Sport, Richard C. Crepeau Dec 2012

College Sport, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

It’s been some time since I sat down and watched as much as a half of a college football game. Last fall I was in London, a city not infected by intercollegiate athletics, and this fall I simply never got enough time or interest to watch. Then a few weeks ago I did see several games. Florida and Florida State always draws my interest, and the Notre Dame run has been an interesting one.

Homes Across The Border: Russian Summer Houses In The Karelian Isthmus And The Finnish State, 1917–1927, Kitty Lam

Faculty Publications & Research

At the end of the 19th century, numerous St. Petersburg residents established their summer homes in the Karelian Isthmus, a picturesque region in the Grand Duchy of Finland, an autonomous province of the Russian Empire. The ease of travel between the Russian imperial capital and the Finnish seaside towns contributed to this practice. After 1917, a new border regime delineated the nascent Finnish state from the equally new Russian/ Soviet state. This change displaced the majority of Russian proprietors, as well as those imperial subjects who rented vacation properties from local Finns. This article addresses how state-building practices distinguishing between …

Book Review: Drawing Card, Scott D. Peterson Dec 2012

Book Review: Drawing Card, Scott D. Peterson

Communication Faculty Publications

Although Drawing Card employs many of the standard conventions of a baseball novel, Mills' book also makes significant and surprising departures. Instead of telling the story of a player's experience in the game, the narrative derives primarily from the consequences of a dream denied. The novel also serves as a cultural history of Cleveland of the 1930s and 1940s with side trips to Sicily at various key points in the island's history.

The Cosmic Christ: The Christology Of Joseph Sittler, Steven C. Bouma-Prediger

Faculty Publications

Christians seeking to "save the planet" have to relate "creation" with "salvation" in a way that does justice to both themes. This collection explores the ways in which this task is approached in a wide range of recent theological movements. It includes sections by 54 authors from all over the world. The book provides a barometer of contemporary theological movements.

In Defense Of Adaptation: Aestheticism Versus Functionalism In The Wicked Franchise, Amanda S. Adams Dec 2012

In Defense Of Adaptation: Aestheticism Versus Functionalism In The Wicked Franchise, Amanda S. Adams

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

This project serves as an extended case study on the adaptability of an aesthetic text into a popular text. It focuses on Gregory Maguire’s original novel Wicked, which drew its inspiration from the universally known land of Oz, and the subsequent stage adaptation by the same name. The first half of the project involves an extensive text-to-stage analysis, delineating the differences between the two mediums. The second half of the project involves an examination of the sequels to the original novel as commodities. Each of the novels is a literary text created for a narrower audience, while the popular …

The Concise Guide To The Modern Calvinist/Arminian Debate, David J. Leonhardt Dec 2012

The Concise Guide To The Modern Calvinist/Arminian Debate, David J. Leonhardt

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

The Calvinist/Arminian debate is not a new issue to the Protestant Church; however, it is an issue that has resurged within contemporary Christianity. One major offense committed in this controversial debate occurs when a person or group uses a term from the opposite side in a way that is not the proponent’s original intent or meaning. Furthermore, misconceptions concerning the actual doctrines maintained by either side have become commonplace in the debate. In order to correct this problem, this thesis will serve as a guide for understanding the Calvinist/Arminian debate. It will provide information on the founders of the two …

Is there anyone out there who thought that Paul Tagliabue would overturn the player suspensions imposed by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell in the New Orleans bounty case? Maybe someone somewhere had predicted this, but if they did they would be members of an extremely small club.

"Go, Going, Gone": Anti-Chinese Sentiment In Washington Territory, 1885-1886, Naomi Eide Dec 2012

"Go, Going, Gone": Anti-Chinese Sentiment In Washington Territory, 1885-1886, Naomi Eide

History & Classics Undergraduate Theses

Unwilling to conform to the pressure set forth by the national government, the citizens of Washington Territory, during 1885 and 1886, united to purge the region of the Chinese through a systematic ethnic cleansing of two major territorial cities. Motivated by the desire to become active members of the federal government, Territorial leaders ignored the negative effects of population exclusion and led an active movement rallying around the cry that “the Chinese must go.” Not until the lawlessness of the rioters shut down the territorial government, did the political agitators acknowledge how outsiders perceived their drastic actions, realizing that the …

A Rhetorical Approach To Teaching Shakespeare In Secondary Schools, Kasey Hammer Dec 2012

A Rhetorical Approach To Teaching Shakespeare In Secondary Schools, Kasey Hammer

Student Works

The great bard, William Shakespeare, who penned over 35 plays and more than 150 sonnets, has as one critic notes, over the centuries become "an institutionalized rite of civility. The person who does not love Shakespeare has made, the rite implies, an incomplete adjustment... to culture as a whole" (Greenblatt 1). His genius is indisputable and for this reason, he is still taught in English classrooms at all academic levels. However, generally when the works of Shakespeare are taught in a school setting, they are taught with an emphasis on his poetic and thematic qualities. While these are both undoubtedly …

The Merchant Of Venice As A Non-Racist Text, Marsha Wonnacott Dec 2012

The Merchant Of Venice As A Non-Racist Text, Marsha Wonnacott

Student Works

The Merchant of Venice is typically read as a racist text, and often censored as such from production in modern society or from study in modern high schools. This is due to the racism in the play. However, I submit that although racism is clearly present in the play, the play in itself never actually promotes any form of racism or condones prejudice. Throughout the play we see good and bad sides of both the Christians and the Jew, and we never come to any conclusion about how they should be treated. In this way the text actually provokes audiences …

Modern Lessons In Relationship Dynamics From Shakespeare's Othello, Mallory Brugger Dec 2012

Modern Lessons In Relationship Dynamics From Shakespeare's Othello, Mallory Brugger

Student Works

Shakespeare's Othello contains crucial lessons that are important for secondary students to understand. Lessons learned by the play's main characters—both male and female—can serve as a guide to help students find relevance in Shakespeare's words and find solutions to their problems. This paper addresses five topics that are particularly meaningful to the young adult experience: social transitioning, trust establishment, jealousy avoidance, reputation preservation, and integrity maintenance. It is vital for students to learn the social lessons available through the study, discussion, and application of literature.

A (Graphic) Novel Approach To Teaching Shakespeare: Embracing Non-Traditional Texts In The Secondary English Classroom, Janelle Frossard Dec 2012

A (Graphic) Novel Approach To Teaching Shakespeare: Embracing Non-Traditional Texts In The Secondary English Classroom, Janelle Frossard

Student Works

This paper explores the graphic novel as a means to engage secondary English students in the works of Shakespeare. Graphic novels can combat some of the common complaints of teaching Shakespeare in secondary schools. They can help students to better relate to and understand the stories and language of Shakespeare. They can also assist learning disabled students in accessing and engaging in Shakespeare.

Shakespeare's Taming Of The Shrew Compared With The Expectations Of Elizabethan Marriage, Jessica Asay Dec 2012

Shakespeare's Taming Of The Shrew Compared With The Expectations Of Elizabethan Marriage, Jessica Asay

Student Works

Shakespeare's Taming of the Shrew demonstrates the possible equality of marriage within Elizabethan marriage standards. However, in order to understand the importance of this concept one must first understand the negotiations, and role expectations within marriage during this time period. In Taming of the Shrew, Shakespeare first introduces the audience to Petruchio who emulates the traditional man in an Elizabethan marriage. Then he establishes Katherine's character which does not fit into the expected role of subservient wife. Shakespeare compares their relationship to the traditional marriage because Shakespearean audiences would have been familiar with this social commentary. Katherine realizes that she …

Youth In Interfaith Dialogue: Intercultural Understanding And Its Implications On Education In The Philippines, Jayeel Cornelio, Timothy Andrew E. Salera Dec 2012

Youth In Interfaith Dialogue: Intercultural Understanding And Its Implications On Education In The Philippines, Jayeel Cornelio, Timothy Andrew E. Salera

Development Studies Faculty Publications

In the wake of religious conflicts around the world, interfaith dialogues are being introduced to facilitate intercultural and religious understanding and tolerance. Although the participation of young people in interfaith dialogue and its impact on education is crucial to its sustainability, the literature on youth and interfaith has been very limited. This article addresses this gap by probing the significance or impact of interfaith on the views of our youth respondents on other religions. The view of our youth respondents show that interfaith dialogues do not have to begin and end in theological discussions. To them, the significance of interfaith …

Adventus: The Great Coming Of 1862, John M. Rudy

Interpreting the Civil War: Connecting the Civil War to the American Public

A couple of weeks ago, I spent a weekend in Harpers Ferry helping to interpret that amazing place for the National Historical Park's annual Christmas 1864 event. One of the greatest joys of my desk job in interpretive training is getting back out into a parkscape to test out new ideas and practices. This time it gave me the chance to experiment out in the field, wearing the olde-timey clothes of the 1860s and discussing how hammers, anvils and black labor won the war through the U.S. Quartermasters Depot at Harpers Ferry. The event is amazingly fun and infinitely powerful …

Policy options targeted at relief services include increasing direct aid through funding fistula surgeries, building rural hospitals, and providing skills training for women awaiting surgery. Additional policy options addressing the problem at its root include legislative changes to stop impunity at the International Criminal Court, revising the Convention on Genocide to include sex and gender, utilization of devices such as the Rape aXe, and changing the culture of misogyny through educational …
