This Minute, Jean Gallagher Oct 2005

This Minute, Jean Gallagher

Poetry

This Minute is a connected whole, in which the verse is driven by strong intellectual excitement, evident in the energetic movement of the lines and in a vocabulary that switches easily from the colloquial to the exact. There is an urgent voice, felt close at hand. And there is a skill in handling and matching the size of a poem to its subject that makes each invigorating to read—one arrives slightly out of breath. These poems convey a “metaphysical” meaning as well as a bodily intimacy. They are luminous, discovering rather than manufacturing their metaphors as the most exact way …

The Rose Man Of Sing Sing: A True Tale Of Life, Murder, And Redemption In The Age Of Yellow Journalism, James M. Morris

History

Today, seventy-three years after his death, journalists still tell tales of Charles E. Chapin. As city editor of Pulitzer’s New York Evening World , Chapin was the model of the take-no-prisoners newsroom tyrant: he drove reporters relentlessly—and kept his paper in the center ring of the circus of big-city journalism. From the Harry K. Thaw trial to the sinking of the Titanic , Chapin set the pace for the evening press, the CNN of the pre-electronic world of journalism.

In 1918, at the pinnacle of fame, Chapin’s world collapsed. Facing financial ruin, sunk in depression, he decided to kill himself …

History And Society: Fact, Fiction And Reform In The Serbian Education System, Valerie Ullrich Oct 2005

History And Society: Fact, Fiction And Reform In The Serbian Education System, Valerie Ullrich

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

History instruction is a means of disseminating political and cultural “truth” in societies all over the world. History occupies only a small space in the educational schemes that socialize and politicize children to their societies, but it could be argued that it plays a disproportionate role in these processes. In societies with contentious historical records and/or histories of conflict, it is particularly important to examine the role that history instruction does in fact play, as it can have positive or disastrous consequences over the long term. Serbian society provides one example of the potential effects of incomplete, politically influenced historical …

Translating The Lesbian Writer : Pierre Loüys, Natalie Clifford Barney, And "Girls Of The Future Society", Tama L. Engelking Oct 2005

Translating The Lesbian Writer : Pierre Loüys, Natalie Clifford Barney, And "Girls Of The Future Society", Tama L. Engelking

World Languages, Literatures, and Cultures Faculty Publications

When Pierre Louÿs published his Chansons de Bilitis in 1894, he dedicated the volume of prose poems, which he claimed to have translated from the Greek, to "Young Girls of the Future Society." He portrayed his Bilitis as a contemporary of Sappho's whose life story, described in the three parts of the Chansons, takes her from deflowered shepherdess, to lesbian lover, to courtesan. More than a literary hoax or a collection of erotic poems, his Bilitis songs became the inspiration for a young Sapphic writer who embodied those girls of the future to whom Louÿs had dedicated his work, Natalie …

The Achaemenid Empire In South Asia And Recent Excavations In Akra In Northwest Pakistan, Peter Magee, Cameron Petrie, Robert Knox, Farid Khan, Ken Thomas Oct 2005

The Achaemenid Empire In South Asia And Recent Excavations In Akra In Northwest Pakistan, Peter Magee, Cameron Petrie, Robert Knox, Farid Khan, Ken Thomas

Classical and Near Eastern Archaeology Faculty Research and Scholarship

The impact of the Achaemenid annexation of northwestern Pakistan has remained a focus for archaeological research for more than a century. A lack of well-stratified settlements and a focus on artifacts that are not necessarily appropriate for assessing the effects of imperial control have until now obfuscated our understanding of this issue. In this article, we present the results of three seasons of excavations at Akra located in the North West Frontier Province of Pakistan. Although research was cut short in 2001 by global events, our preliminary results indicate that the relation;;hip between urbanism, trade, and the Achaemenid annexation was …

The Odd Man Out: The Kings In Corneille's Machine Plays, Nina Ekstein Oct 2005

The Odd Man Out: The Kings In Corneille's Machine Plays, Nina Ekstein

Modern Languages and Literatures Faculty Research

Andromède and La Conquête de la Toison d’or have a largely unenviable status in Corneille’s oeuvre. They are often either dismissed or marginalized, and almost inevitably read as different from, and therefore inferior to, the more canonical Cornelian works. In fact, both plays are richer and more interesting than commonly thought, as I hope to suggest by an examination of the curious and curiously similar role of the king.

Great Anger, Anthony Cunningham Oct 2005

Great Anger, Anthony Cunningham

Philosophy Faculty Publications

Anger has had a major hand in a history of inhumanity. In this light, some schools of thought have suggested that we do best to jettison anger entirely. However, anger, like grief, is tied to caring deeply, and as such, both emotions can speak to what is best and most beautiful about human life and character.

Ritual Legitimacy And Scriptural Authority, James W. Watts Oct 2005

Ritual Legitimacy And Scriptural Authority, James W. Watts

Religion - All Scholarship

In this essay, James W. Watts explains the interdependence of texts and rituals with regard to ancient religions. Specifically, he outlines patterns of practice and developments in the ritual use of texts and the texual authorization of rituals in antiquity.

Watts also makes the case that beyond the interplay of texual authority and ritual legitimacy that most ancient cultures engaged in, Judaism was unique in elevating the Torah along with its other laws and stories to special "scriptural" status.

Making Value Visible: Excellence In Campus-Community Partnerships In The Arts, Humanities, And Design, Cynthia Koch Oct 2005

Making Value Visible: Excellence In Campus-Community Partnerships In The Arts, Humanities, And Design, Cynthia Koch

Imagining America

This study sets forth what practitioners themselves believe to be the characteristics of excellence in campus-community partnerships in the arts, humanities, and design. It presents the fruits of a research project of modest scale. But in so doing it reveals something large: a flourishing world of work populated by faculty artists and scholars; staff members of nonprofit organizations and public cultural institutions; and creative citizens working through robust networks. Attentive to the texture and tones of practioners' voices, the report responds to people who are clearly hungry to address questions about excellence.

Making Value Visible opens a window on the …

Stasis And Change In Federal Policy, Regional Texts, And Curriculum: Moving Forward, Annie Loranger Oct 2005

Stasis And Change In Federal Policy, Regional Texts, And Curriculum: Moving Forward, Annie Loranger

WWU Honors College Senior Projects

“Native Americans lost control of their land.. .due to the expansion of a country.” “Indians are now living the kind of lives we expect of 20th century Americans.” Although it would be easy and preferable to believe that the previous two quotes were from the early twentieth century when stereotypes and racialized history were more prevalent, in truth the quotes come from Dale Lambert’s elementary school textbook Washington: A State of Contrast published in 2005. Lambert and many of his contemporaries have continued to treat the history of Native Americans in the Pacific Northwest in a way that discredits their …

Feminism And The Art Of Interpretation: Or, Reading The First Wave To Think About The Second And Third Waves, Marilyn Fischer Oct 2005

Feminism And The Art Of Interpretation: Or, Reading The First Wave To Think About The Second And Third Waves, Marilyn Fischer

Philosophy Faculty Publications

Cory, my daughter, accuses me of having no thoughts of my own. I was talking with Jeremy [“Cory, what do you call him? partner? significant other? boyfriend?” “Mom, I just call him Jeremy.” Alright, then.]. Jeremy asked why I was an almost pacifist. Without even breathing, I launched into Addams’s arguments for pacifism, fully attributed to her, of course. That’s when Cory accused me of having no thoughts of my own. So, if I have no thoughts of my own, inhabiting Addams’s thoughts is not a bad substitute.

Remembering how Addams viewed much of her work as interpreting American institutions …

Alternative Voices: Artists’ Books, Comix, And Zines, Sally Dickinson

Watkinson Publications

Guide to Watkinson exhibition.

This exhibition is arranged primarily by theme and secondarily by structure. Added to the large representation of artists’ books are examples of other contemporary alternative voices such as Art Spiegelman’s comic, In the Shadow of No Towers, and Karen Switzer’s zine, Ker-bloom! These works form a group that is innovative, visual, and outside the mainstream publishing industry. Some works are collaborations. Several have musical and audio components. They all present a personal vision through exploration of processes, materials, and form, that we are invited to share.
