As artificial intelligence reshapes literacy education, teachers face the challenge of preparing students to engage critically with new technologies while honoring the cultural and community knowledge they bring to the classroom. This article proposes a critical, place-based pedagogical framework rooted in rural Appalachian literacy traditions as a means of guiding students toward reflective engagement with AI — particularly large language models (LLMs). Drawing on the theoretical foundations of Freire's critical pedagogy, Giroux's cultural literacy framework, and place-based education, we examine historical Appalachian literacy practices as models for resisting the standardizing and dehumanizing tendencies of AI-generated writing. The rapid integration of generative artificial intelligence (AI) into academic, civic, and personal contexts requires students to develop the skills and dispositions necessary for ethical and critical engagement with AI‑mediated texts. While AI literacy is often framed as a technical competency associated with computer science, this paper argues that secondary English language arts (ELA) classrooms are uniquely positioned to support AI literacy through media literacy practices. This article emphasizes high-impact practices in the archives and encourages instructors and archivists to use prolonged collaboration as a way to teach digital learners analog thinking. The digital and physical exhibits we discuss were designed to model liberal arts thinking and curate experiential learning opportunities that led students to make connections between artifacts and lived experiences. In October 2020, a new service was launched at the State Archives of Belgium, the Social Sciences and Digital Humanities Archive (SODHA). It is the result of several years of feasibility research into the viability of a data archive for social sciences and digital humanities in the research landscape of Belgium. SODHA acts as a service provider for the Consortium of European Social Science Data Archive (CESSDA ERIC) and takes up the task of preserving and disseminating research data in any of the disciplines that constitute the aforementioned fields.

This study examines the user interface (UI) designs of Genshin Impact and Wuthering Waves and explores Generation Z players' perceptions of their visual and functional characteristics. Employing a descriptive qualitative comparative approach, data were collected through direct game observation, interface documentation, semi-structured interviews, and open-ended questionnaires involving five Generation Z players domiciled on Java Island, Indonesia. The analysis focused on four interface components: the heads-up display, main menu, character menu, and inventory menu, evaluated using five design principles: clarity and simplicity, clear and concise language, consistency, visual hierarchy, and visual aesthetics. Abstract

This essay reads Frodo's trajectory of vocation, sacrifice, and salvation in The Lord of the Rings through Aquinas's account of the cooperation of grace and free will (Summa Theologica I-II, qq. 109–114), and reads Gollum and Gríma as two unwitting mediators of grace. It does not argue that Tolkien consciously adopted this doctrine, but that his characters enact it. Frodo freely accepts two vocations, the destruction of the Ring and the protection of the Shire, yet cannot complete either by his own strength. TikTok has become a digital communication space for promoting products while constructing representations of identity and gender. This study examines linguistic strategies in the representation of femininity in beauty product advertisements on TikTok Indonesia. It employs a qualitative descriptive method using Feminist Critical Discourse Analysis (Feminist CDA). The data consist of verbal elements from advertisements by Scarlett Whitening, Wardah Beauty, and Natur-E, analyzed in terms of lexical choices, grammatical structures, persuasive forms, and rhetorical strategies. This study examines objective and formal introversion as an analytical framework for understanding the visual organization of 12th–13th-century CE (6th–7th centuries AH) glazed ceramics from Bamiyan within the broader cultural context of medieval Khurasan. While previous scholarship has extensively addressed the typological, technical, and decorative characteristics of Khurasanian ceramics, comparatively less attention has been given to the structural principles governing their internal visual organization. Using an art-historical and visual-semiotic approach, the study analyzes five purposively selected vessels from a documented corpus of 15 objects. This study aims to describe patterns of Indonesian language errors produced by a Russian speaker in social media content on the @marielle.world account and to identify the factors contributing to these errors. This descriptive qualitative study examined five posts, comprising one Instagram post and four TikTok posts. Data were collected using non-participant observation and note-taking techniques and analyzed through a five-stage language error analysis procedure. The findings identified 68 instances of deviation, classified into two analytical categories. This study examines the representation of environmental criticism in Fiersa Besari’s song “Alam Bukan Tempat Sampah” through Ferdinand de Saussure’s semiotic framework. It employs a descriptive qualitative method, using the complete song lyrics as its data source. Analysis involves reading the text, identifying signifiers, interpreting signifieds, grouping meanings, and developing interpretations within the context of the lyrics as a whole. The findings indicate that environmental criticism is constructed through word choices, semantic contrasts, metaphors, imperatives, and repetition. The lyrics criticize environmental neglect, the pursuit of wealth and power, and complaints or blame unaccompanied by corrective action. The metaphor “our home” …

Jonathan Birch is rightly sceptical about the idea that today’s AI machines (e.g. LLMs) are candidates for sentience. Nonetheless, he gives three reasons for taking the future possibility of AI sentience seriously. I dispute them all. Birch fails to distinguish the very idea of an artificial mind from computational AI (what I call ‘Real Existing AI’); he does not adequately distinguish a simulation from a replica or copy; and he fails to acknowledge that the appeal to computational functionalism in this context is straightforwardly question-begging.

I critically examine Jonathan Birch’s account of how brain emulations might create artificial sentience candidates, arguing that his account risks collapsing into a behaviourist account, unless the specific computational processes realised by such emulations are carefully considered. Drawing on examples from computational neuroscience, I show that similar behaviours can arise from vastly different computational processes, thereby undermining the suggestion to focus on behaviourial profiles to determine whether a brain emulation of a sentience candidate is itself a sentience candidate.

Cet article examine l’insécurité linguistique (IL) chez des élèves d’immersion française (IF) en Saskatchewan en s’appuyant sur la sociolinguistique pour le changement. À partir d’un devis mixte (un questionnaire à large échelle auprès d’élèves de 7e–12e année et des groupes de discussion focalisés avec des élèves de 11e–12e année), l’étude décrit les différentes manifestations de l’IL, ses causes et ses effets sur les élèves tout en recensant des stratégies d’adaptation.
