The novel Don Quijote de la Mancha is a classic known throughout the centuries and has left behind such a legacy that no one can deny its importance in the world of literature. However, young readers are unable to immerse themselves in this classic unless through an adapted version of the original novel. Through an analysis of various children’s adaptations of Don Quijote de la Mancha, this investigation suggests that the most important themes of the novel, such as friendship, duality, and identity, are still preserved within the adaptations, although somewhat modified to reach a younger audience.

Proceed To Olympus: The Iconography Of The Return Of Hephaestus, Catherine Hensly

The mythological story of Hephaestus’ return to Mount Olympus exists in fragmentary literary accounts which are augmented by a pictorial record. Working backward from Classical images of Hephaestus’ return, the François Vase manifests as the primary source of the depiction’s overall composition. Examination of sixty-three vases featuring the return as published in the Lexicon Iconographicum Mythologiae Classicae reveals certain themes cycling through over the course of the 6th and 5th centuries BCE. By creating a timeline of these images, deductive reasoning establishes the François Vase as the iconographic prototype. Later images expand or abbreviate its motifs as they simultaneously reflect …

Historically, Thomas has a rich identity. Much of the apocrypha was named for the “doubting” disciple, such as The Infancy Gospel of Thomas, The Book of Thomas the Contender, The Acts of the Apostle Thomas, and The Gospel of Thomas, yet these traditions do not address Thomas’s doubting story from The Gospel of John. In fact, Thomas becomes the favored disciple in The Book of Thomas the Contender and logion 13 of The Gospel of Thomas. From humble beginnings, the Vestal Virgins were able to create a foothold in political life through the turbulence of the transition from Republic to Principate. In part due to the violent and perilous transition, the Vestal Virgins of Rome began to represent a sense of what it meant to be Roman. The manifestation of the symbolization of Rome gave the Vestals great power, which they expressed in political and social venues. The rhythmic structures of Western art music tend to be highly regular. With regards to metrical organization (i.e. grouping of strong and weak beats), previous research by Huron (2006) indicates that binary (strong-weak) meters tend to be more prevalent than ternary (strong-weak-weak) meters. However, relatively little is known about other types of metrical organization, such as meters based on 5- or 7-beat patterns. Results are reported from a corpus study of 5- and 7-beat musical melodies. Arguably one of the most widely acclaimed literary masterpieces, it is no surprise that Miguel de Cervantes’s El ingenioso hidalgo don Quijote de la Mancha left a cultural legacy that has influenced the work of authors, artists, and filmmakers across the globe. English Department Chair Dean Rader assisted me in getting my paper chosen for presentation (with a Q&A session) at the upcoming Sigma Tau Delta International Convention this month. This research explores the difference in readability of historical and modern writing. The goal of this project is to determine if modern academic rhetoric is easier to comprehend than a historical primary source about the same topic. This has been done using a variety of quantitative methods widely used to analyze the accessibility of writings to compare sections of “The Confederate Reader” by Richard B. Harwell. Upon examination, it can be seen that despite the widely perceived convenience in comprehending modern writing that in fact, a primary Civil War period source is more readable than its current day academic counterpart.

Exploring The Problem We All Live With: The Motivation And Ambition Behind Norman Rockwell’S Civil Rights Depictions, Kelly Richman

Using Norman Rockwell’s The Problem We All Live With (1964) a Civil Rights-era depiction of the integration of black and white students in 1960, I argue that Rockwell chose to portray Civil Rights themes in order to make an altruistic plea for equality. To demonstrate my claim, I have researched academic sources, journal articles that explore Rockwell’s views and painterly approach to race, and documents of important political events of the Civil Rights Movement. Through this research, I use textual evidence to conclude that Norman Rockwell was genuinely committed to promoting Civil Rights in his work.

This paper conducted a literature review of current research examining fantasy football participants. Fantasy football has become popular in recent years due the attention from the media, most notably sports shows providing more coverage of fantasy football. Theories that have examined fantasy football include gambling theory, and uses and gratifications. Motivational types also provide categories to describe players. Additionally this theory also provides a method to measure these players called the Motivational Scale for Fantasy Football Participation (MSFFP). Does Movie Viewing Cultivate Unrealistic Expectations About Love And Marriage?, Lauren Galloway

The present study investigated the connection between romantic movie viewing frequency and endorsement of dysfunctional beliefs for romantic relationships in a university-based sample of 228 participants. Respondents completed a questionnaire in which they reported demographic information as well as responses to the several scales that measure endorsement of romantic ideals. I base this investigation of Segrin and Nabi’s (2002) examination of television viewing habits and proclivity for unrealistic expectations of sex, love, and marriage. Both the current study and the investigation conducted by Segrin and Nabi (2002) support the supposition that media play a part in reinforcing beliefs about coupleships. …

This thesis provides an exploratory overview of the role the El Mercurio newspaper played along with the military after the Chilean coup of 1973. The study reviews the contents of the newspaper’s front pages, including their coverage of the events during the coup. The thesis will show how the paper revisited its coverage each year on the September 11th anniversary, beginning with the years dominated by the military government, from 1973 through 1990, and continuing through the transition to democracy, from 1991 through 2007. Buchenwald concentration camp, located in Weimar, Germany, was a place of suffering, cruelty and death during World War II and during the first five years of the cold war. As many were tortured and perished there, it has since become a place of remembrance. Being one of the few concentration camps to not be destroyed by the Nazis before they could be liberated, since its final closure in 1950 numerous memorials have been erected to commemorate the events that took place and the people who fell victim to those events. The conductor has become a position of great influence and necessity to the performing ensemble due to innovations in performance between the Baroque and mid to late Romantic periods. With such prominence given to the title, one such conductor has gained very little mention throughout the course of music's history. African-American musicians have played such a catalytic role in the shape and progression of Western music.

I have found through sociological research and observation that body language defines how people perceive us. The importance of the first handshake, the manner we bring our hands together while talking, or the way students use their fist to rest on their chin while in class -- all these mannerisms explain to the potential employer, the vivid listener, or the professor how we feel without consciously knowing it. The purpose of my work is to expand awareness to professionals towards implications of their presented body language.

An Allegorical Reading Of Cormac Mccarthy's Outer Dark, Renee Williams

Though Cormac McCarthy deals with aspects of religion in each of his works, Outer Dark stands apart as a complete theodicy presented through complex allegory. Through his casting of the novel's characters as analogues for Christ, humanity, and Satan, McCarthy comments on the nature and consequences of the cosmic struggle between the forces of good and evil. McCarthy constructs his theodicy with the incorporation of Nietzschean philosophy and a deistic perspective.
