My senior project examines the portrayal of LGBT people in the media. The purpose of this research is to show how the media’s portrayal of lesbians, gays, bisexuals, and transgendered people (LGBT) affects individuals and society as a whole. The research will explore the history of the LGBT community’s relationship with the media from the 1920s to the present, with emphasis on the Stonewall Riots as the beginning of an organized LGBT movement. The research will focus on films, television programs, and press articles for their depiction of LGBT’s and the issues impacting their lives. I will explore the evolution …

This collection of poetry uses the perspectives of sidekicks and villains to create different stories and to provide a deeper connection with these often overlooked characters. The narrators of these poems are Maleficent the evil queen in Sleeping Beauty, Grumpy one of the seven dwarfs, Falada the horse of the Goose Girl, and the fairy godmother from Cinderella who becomes the evil queen from Snow White. Through poetry these characters are allowed to share their deeper feelings surrounding the heroes that are familiar to us and to also show their unique personalities. For nearly half a century, animatronic figures have provided entertainment in the theme park industry by simulating life-like animations and sounds. These figures enhance the storytelling experience by stimulating visual and audio senses among guests. Animatronics must be identified as human partners to establish status for dynamic interactions for enhanced acceptance and effectiveness as socially-interactive agents. An animatronic dragon, Kronos, has been designed, fabricated and implemented with human-identification sensors. The primary sensor input comes from an infrared camera, the PrimeSense Carmine, and includes an Arduino Mega 2560 as the center of control. Using the data from the depth camera, people …

Within the context of the production of contemporary art, interest has increasingly focused on global art. New cultural and artistic exchanges have influenced and enabled artists of diverse backgrounds to gain recognition with international art exhibitions being the forum in which to encounter and interpret new artistic representations. The 55th Venice Biennale held in 2013 hosted over 88 national pavilions, exhibiting works by over 150 artists. It was here that I encountered the work of Egyptian artist Mohamed Banawy and his large scale multimedia mosaic ‘The Valley’. This thesis takes an analytical approach to examine the television show I Love Lucy. The contributing factors to the show’s continued success are considered, including Lucille Ball’s comedic style, domesticity and the role of housewives, marital relations, pregnancy on television, and the larger gender representations with a subtopic of social norms. Upon studying the above aspects of I Love Lucy, it is clear that each topic played an essential role in the success of the show. Die Popmusik hat wie andere Kunstformen und Musikrichtungen die Macht, sowohl persönliche Gefühle als auch soziale Änderung zu inspirieren, deren Wirkungen langfristige Folgen haben können. Man liegt aber in der aktuellen Musikforschung den meisten Fokus darauf, wie die neusten Produkte der heutigen Popmusiker aufhören Kunst zu sein und nur ein wirtschaftliches bzw. psychologisches Phänomen verbleiben. This paper and accompanying sources hope to provide a detailed examination of the world of darlings at Hollins between the years 1900 and 1921, using primary sources gathered from The Spinster, the college’s yearbook. As a small, single-sex institution established in 1842, Hollins has a history of romantic relationships between students. Students who participated in these relationships between the years of 1900 and 1921 were called “darlings.” These same-sex relationships flourished at Hollins in the early 20th century and were a well-known and accepted part of life at Hollins. Vor fünfundzwanzig Jahren ist die Berliner Mauer gefallen und eine neue Epoche in Deutschland hat begonnen. Die Wiedervereinigung und das Zusammenführen der Volkswirtschaften haben die Ostdeutschen und Westdeutschen in verschiedenen Weisen beeinflusst. Meine Studie untersucht, wie sich die Ostdeutschen und die Westdeutschen persönlich zu dem neu vereinigten deutschen Staat angepasst haben (Jarausch 335). Die Ostdeutschen mussten sich sowohl auf eine neue politische und kulturelle Situation einstellen als auch sich an eine westdeutsche kapitalistische Gesellschaft anpassen. Was ist eine gute Übersetzung aus dem Orientalischen? In dem 1978 erschienenen Werk Orientalismus hebt Said die politischen Auswirkungen eines eurozentrischen Bildes des Nahen Ostens hervor. Er konzentriert sich überwiegend auf die abwertenden literarischen Darstellungen des Ostens von europäischen Gelehrten in der Epoche nach der Aufklärung. Said beschäftigt sich dabei mit Michel Foucaults Begriff des Diskurses, um die systematische Disziplin zu analysieren, mit der die Europäer in dem achtzehnten und neunzehnten Jahrhundert den Orient politisch, soziologisch und ideologisch produziert haben. Diese Studie untersucht Sprachlernende und versucht zu beobachten, welche sprachlernenden Strategien sie benutzen. Die Studie untersucht insbesondere, ob es eine Verbindung gibt zwischen dem Lernstil von Sprachenlernenden und der Zeit, die die Sprachlernenden mit dem Sprachstudium verbracht haben. Um diese Frage zu beantworten, analysiert die Studie drei Personen, die Spanisch lernen. Alle drei haben unterschiedlich lange mit der Sprache verbracht und wurden entsprechend verschiedenen Sprachebenen ausgesetzt. This study looks at how the non-recognitional reference form “someone” is used to refer to a known referent when a recognitional, such as a first name or a descriptive recognitional (Stiver, 2007), is available (Sacks & Schegloff, 1979). In a conversation, when participants have shared knowledge about who a referent is, the occurrence of “someone” connotes more than a simple reference to the referent. While there is little previous research concerning the use of a non-recognitional to complete particular social actions, in this study, I show how “someone” can be employed to accomplish disaffiliative actions such as complaints, accusations and …

In the earliest works of literature, authors discuss the implications and qualities of human fallacy. Studying the works of The Bible, Agamemnon by Aeschylus, and The Odyssey by Homer, one can see this concept through the actions of characters. In particular, Samson, Agamemnon, and Odysseus portray the fall, recognition, and redemption of mankind. In the case of Samson, Yahweh has established the covenant of the Nazarene with him. However, he falls and breaks the covenant. Through a painful series of events, Samson eventually recognizes his faults but does not redeem himself before his tragic death. But it was the united efforts of three Protestant denominations—the Congregationalists, the Unitarians, and the Quakers—that finally turned a large segment of the populace against the war. A narrative of the riots is given as well as a description of the formation of the modern gay and lesbian liberation movement in the United States.
