Native Products: Nordes 2015 Edition, Costas Bissas, Vasso Asfi, Loukas Angelou

Nordes Conference Series

Native Products is an initiative that could act as a stepping point towards the exploration of alternative mediums and processes of the production cycle. Papairlines have developed a workshop sequence through which flora is transformed into a paste that can be later used as a raw material to cast objects. The process uses household tools and herbs. During this workshop participants will be part of the different stages of processing the raw materials and create small utilitarian objects, while contributing to a debate on how production takes place today and what alternatives can be developed in the current socioeconomic status.

Design For Degrowth: Drawing Ecologies Together, Laura Popplow, Judith Marlen Dobler

Nordes Conference Series

In this workshop we will explore design for degrowth in a collaborative manner. In the first part of the half-day workshop we will discuss in a playful way different visual notions of growth and possible future notions of post- or degrowth. The participants are asked to submit visual material enabling us to create a conversational tool. While taking different roles in the discussion, we will select topics together that seem important to be further worked on. In a second session the participants will split up in smaller groups sketching ideas collaboratively on how a degrowth scenario in the Anthropocene could …

Design And Implementation Of An Interactive Animatronic System For Guest Response Analysis, Brian Burns Jun 2015

Design And Implementation Of An Interactive Animatronic System For Guest Response Analysis, Brian Burns

Phi Kappa Phi Research Symposium (Archived)

In theme park based entertainment applications, there is a need for interactive, autonomous animatronic systems to create engaging and compelling experiences for the guests. The animatronic figures must identify the guests and recognize their status in dynamic interactions for enhanced acceptance and effectiveness as socially interactive agents, in the general framework of human-robot interactions. The design and implementation of an interactive, autonomous animatronic system in form of a tabletop dragon, Kronos, and the comparisons of guest responses in its passive and interactive modes are presented in this work. The dragon capabilities include a four degrees-of-freedom head, moving wings, tail, jaw, …

The Medieval Screen: A Work In Progress, Julie Carmen

Symposium Of University Research and Creative Expression (SOURCE)

The purpose is to design a medieval screen to answer the question: "Will people be inspired to study history and fiber art when presented with colorful embroidered patches displayed on a screen?" The screen project is a work in progress I am creating to display images from a thirteenth century manuscript in a different art medium to induce inspiration and curiosity about this period of time. The poster will describe the work in progress, the different materials used to create a medieval screen, and how the screen has developed over fifteen years. It will discuss the importance of the codices, …

Revitalizing Central Washington University's Largest Art Collection: New Photographics, Skyler Crady May 2015

Revitalizing Central Washington University's Largest Art Collection: New Photographics, Skyler Crady

Symposium Of University Research and Creative Expression (SOURCE)

New Photographics was a nationally known photography exhibition held at Central Washington University. Organized by the late CWU emeritus, Jim Sahlstrand, the show ran from the early 1970s to the late 1980s. During its time, New Photographics was an anticipated event for photographers across the nation and for the CWU Art Department, where it was hosted in the Sarah Spurgeon Gallery. In the late 1980s, the exhibition fizzled out and has ceased to reemerge. Since then, an enormous amount of documents and artwork has been stored in a small room in Randall Hall and has rarely been touched. During this …

Freedom From Equality: Democratic Education And The Failure Of The Nclb, Andrew X. Fleming May 2015

Freedom From Equality: Democratic Education And The Failure Of The Nclb, Andrew X. Fleming

Student Research Symposium

Deeply rooted societal concerns about what role democratic ideals should play within systems of education, and how much sway the federal government should hold over educational institutions, have been at the forefront of American educational policy for decades. These questions have more recently been brought into the limelight once again within the context of the implementation of charter schools and the controversial No Child Left Behind act, and its subsequent failure. The expressed goal of this paper is to provide an examination of what philosophies and ideals of so-called "democratic education" are have played major roles in developing the discourse …

Locke, Figure, And Judgement: A Consistent Answer To The Molyneux Problem, Jamale Nagi May 2015

Locke, Figure, And Judgement: A Consistent Answer To The Molyneux Problem, Jamale Nagi

Student Research Symposium

Ever since the early modern period the Molyneux Problem has been a topic of debate both in the philosophy of perception and the psychology of perception. The problem centers on whether the senses share representational content between one another, or does each sense modality have its own stock of representational content that becomes associated with the others after some habituation. For example, if you knew a shape only by touch, could you identify that shape when seeing it for the first time without being allowed to touch the object? Typically, rationalists have held to the former claiming yes, while empiricists …

Retracing Foucault: Neoliberalism And The Occupy Movement, Jaycob Izso May 2015

Retracing Foucault: Neoliberalism And The Occupy Movement, Jaycob Izso

Student Research Symposium

The Occupy movement presented itself as a reaction to a socio-economic relation; to some it decried the unconstrained expanses and injustices of capitalism, to others it was a resistance to the gross economic disparity perpetuated by a subset of the social strata that lacked governmental accountability. Branded by some as neo-Marxist, by others as merely lazy or lacking any concrete objectives – the Occupy movement met with mixed results. By providing an archaeology of neoliberal governmentality by-way of Michel Foucault; I believe we can not only elucidate the underpinning and political origins of the movement, but also seek to clarify …

Representation Of The Mother’S Body As A Narrative Conduit For Wartime Themes In Saga, Bess Pallares May 2015

Representation Of The Mother’S Body As A Narrative Conduit For Wartime Themes In Saga, Bess Pallares

Student Research Symposium

“Representation of the Mother’s Body as a Narrative Conduit for Wartime Themes in Saga” examines how both diagetic and extradiagetic art creates a visual syuzhet to convey themes of interdependence and transgenerational memory in the comic book series Saga. My method of research was a narrative analysis of volumes 1-4 of Saga, particularly focusing on the artistic representation of two mothers’ bodies within the narrative and on covers of the books, as related to the themes and story. As a result, I found in the artistic syuzhet that the representation of two characters’ bodies as they interact …

Alzheimer's Disease And The Importance Of Music Therapy, Patricia Kautenberger May 2015

Alzheimer's Disease And The Importance Of Music Therapy, Patricia Kautenberger

Celebration of Learning

Worldwide, statistics suggest that by the year 2050 as many as 80 million individuals will be living with Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Because current pharmacological interventions can only slow its progression, the pathology eventually overcomes the benefits of the medications, thus leaving a deficit in long-term treatment. However, the preservation of the brain’s ability to work with and benefit from music has created a window of opportunity for an alternative treatment. Music therapy has been shown to be a promising alternative treatment because it has very little risk, and studies suggest that it is effective in improving familiarity and recollection in …

A Linguistic Phenomenon: Code-Switching In Media And Advertisement, Rebecca E. Cline Tuck May 2015

A Linguistic Phenomenon: Code-Switching In Media And Advertisement, Rebecca E. Cline Tuck

Symposium of Student Scholars

The purpose of this paper is to examine the linguistic phenomenon of code-switching in two different forms of communication: social media and traditional advertising. Code-switching, most common among bilinguals, is the practice of expressing ourselves in conversation, the act of altering the languages we speak, or the ability to switch back and forth between two different languages simultaneously. We all do it, albeit, inadvertently at times, whether it is to fit in, stand out, be understood, emphasize a point, or deliver a message. Throughout this paper, I will analyze code-switching found in a popular actress’ social media account as well …

A Proposal For Dealing With Underage Drinking At Colby, Matthew Mckinney Apr 2015

A Proposal For Dealing With Underage Drinking At Colby, Matthew Mckinney

CLAS: Colby Liberal Arts Symposium

This project details the drinking endemic at Colby college. Students consume alcohol despite the age limit, and face little resistance from campus administration/security. With such little regard for, and such little enforcement of the law, it has begun to lose it's authority. Is this a problem at Colby? If so, is it one of student action, or a lack of administrative response?

Clivus Composting Toilet Systems At Flag Staff Lake, Chi Do, Grace Baldwin Apr 2015

Clivus Composting Toilet Systems At Flag Staff Lake, Chi Do, Grace Baldwin

CLAS: Colby Liberal Arts Symposium

Clivus Multrum composting toilet systems have been used in homes, parks and commercial buildings as the sole method of treating toilet waste. The composting process is reliable, convenient and safe. Its results are both conservative and productive; water is saved from use as a carriage medium and the fertilizer content in excreta is made available for reuse. The Clivus composting toilet uses aerobic decomposition to slowly break down both urine and feces into stable compounds within the polyethylene composting unit. Our poster will outline the technology and economics behind a Clivus system as part of the course Joules to Dollars.
