This exploratory paper provides an account on the big Polish cities that have recently undertaken major problems of so called revitalization. According to New Urbanism ideas, these projects should involve participation of inhabitants and address needs of different actors which dwell in the cities. We introduce two cases of Warsaw and Poznań where the concept of participation becomes misunderstood and the cities’ authorities’ attitude towards urban green removes it – literally and metaphorically – from the soil and makes it a city property easy to move and remove. These cases show how the cities’ policy towards urban greenery focuses different …

Sharing Eco-Soap Knowledge: Joosoap Studio, Ying-Ju Lin, Andrea Botero
Nordes Conference Series
In this paper we document some of the experiences gained while designing and prototyping JooSoap Studio. JooSoap Studio aims to make it easy for people to gather and make eco-soap products together, anywhere in the world. The Studio is part of a larger project that aims to spread sustainable knowledge around making ecological cleaning soap (eco-soap) from recycled used (kitchen) cooking oil pioneered by activist communities in Japan and Taiwan. JooSoap Studio experiments with tools, practices and infrastructures that will help spreading this knowledge to more communities, through local engagement, aiming at sustainability and replicability of the information.
Ways Of Seeing Service: Surrogates For A Design Material, Johan Blomkvist
Ways Of Seeing Service: Surrogates For A Design Material, Johan Blomkvist
Nordes Conference Series
One ongoing debate in service design concerns what can and/or should be designed when working with services. I argue that, as service design grows both academically and in practice, the material of service design is collectively created by individual contributions to service development and design research. This paper looks at such contributions by examining representations, or surrogates, that designers make and use to visualise and prototype services. These representations inform us about what is considered part of service as a design material, including service concepts, processes and systems.
De-Computation: Programming The World Through Design, Kevin Walker, John Fass
De-Computation: Programming The World Through Design, Kevin Walker, John Fass
Nordes Conference Series
We describe a developing methodology called ‘de- computation’ which combines design making and computational thinking in a two-way exchange aimed at understanding and reacting against increasing computational control of humans’ natural, artificial and social systems, by using the tools and methods of computation in the design process. The steps of de-computation are detailed, its relation to similar approaches is explained, examples are given, and we explain its relevance for design research, theory construction and practical design work.
Environmental Aesthetics: Notes For Design Ecology, Connie Svabo, Kathrine Ekelund
Environmental Aesthetics: Notes For Design Ecology, Connie Svabo, Kathrine Ekelund
Nordes Conference Series
The philosophical subfield environmental aesthetics can contribute to the design of sustainable futures. Environmental aesthetics provides a conceptual framework for understanding the relationship between nature and culture. Current positions in environmental aesthetics are lined out and used as backdrop for contributing an ecological approach to design. Three green aesthetic design strategies are sketched: Coated Green, Green Core and Green Stream.
Discussion With Three Jackets: Making A Material Ecology, Tania Splawa-Neyman
Discussion With Three Jackets: Making A Material Ecology, Tania Splawa-Neyman
Nordes Conference Series
It is common today for objects and the materials of their making to be swiftly obtained and then inattentively divested, with little regard for the part that they play within living ecologies of artifice. As expressed by Anne-Marie Willis when ruminating over our ontological change imparted via design, “we no longer know how to dwell among things” (Willis 2006, under ‘From Worlding to Thinging’) Through a series of experiments that anthropomorphise and open discussions with materials, connections are cultivated that are not usual within our everyday experiences of our material world. These material conversations are founded within the creative acts …

“Dystopian fiction’s popularity is a warning sign for the future” worries renowned author and cultural critic Naomi Klein (2014a). For Klein, human made climate change does not call for adaptation or mitigation; it is a civilizational wake-up call. Confronting the apocalypse is not about “changing light bulbs” - it is about change, about transforming the “social system” causing human extinction, about revolting against capitalism (2014b). Dystopian scenarios do not leave much scope for this. In the face of climatic catastrophe, sci-fi authors tend to affirm the inevitable, leaving room only for either apathy or individualist survivalism, stockpiling food and fuel. …

Ways Of Talking With (And About) Materials, Anne Louise Bang, Agnese Caglio, Vibeke Riisberg, Karen Marie Hasling
Nordes Conference Series
In this workshop we are occupied with materials as a means to relate to objects and our environments. We introduce the Repertory Grid technique as a dialogue tool, based on sensorial perception of soft and hard materials. Thus, the aim of the workshop is twofold: firstly, it encourages engagement and conversations about materials on themes such as perception of material qualities. Secondly, it discusses the potential of talking with materials, that is: using the material world as a resource for conversation. The workshop is based on previous research conducted within the field of fashion and textiles where we have identified …

Manipulations: Artefact-Site-Space, Mahmoud Keshavarz, Eric Snodgrass, Ola Ståhl
Nordes Conference Series
This workshop gathers those who are interested in producing a set of responses to the concept of manipulation through a specific framework of design ecologies. The workshop will adapt a methodological approach linking artefact, site and space – an approach we hope will offer ample opportunity to explore manipulation both as a concept and a local and material practice that produces global effects. Participants are invited to contribute with specific case studies of artefacts, sites and/or spaces, reading them up and against the notion of manipulation considered here not merely as an outcome of environments but also as a source …
Unpicking The Fashion System: Practice As Research Workshop, Ruby Hoette
Unpicking The Fashion System: Practice As Research Workshop, Ruby Hoette
Nordes Conference Series
During this workshop participants will experiment with methods of dissection and collage as tools with which to actively engage with the fluid and dynamic relationships that constitute fashion and the shifting role of the fashion designer. Unpicking garments along original seam-lines functions as a metaphor for the unravelling of the mechanisms that constitute pervasive fashion practices and production processes. The resulting loose garment elements will then be rearranged into new formations or mappings - proposals for collective ways of engaging with fashion production and a new fashion ‘collection’. The workshop will draw on the concept of the personal wardrobe, within …

Stories From Fragments: Workshop Of The Desis Philosophy Talk - Design For Social Innovation And Storytelling, Elisa Bertolotti, Heather Daam, Francesca Piredda, Virginia Tassinari
Nordes Conference Series
The German philosopher Hannah Arendt speaks of storytelling as the act to collect the fragments of the destruction of the mainstream and wave them together in a narration. Arendt believes this act of telling stories is the real political action of opening up the common realm. This workshop aims at exploring the role for storytelling, as described by Arendt, in design for social innovation. Grassroots social innovation are examples of alternatives to the mainstream which are emerging in our society. They require new forms of narratives in order to be fully understood and amplified. Participants in this workshop are triggered …
Designing Learning Scenarios For Futures Of Sustainability, Hannah Jones, Anette Lundebye
Designing Learning Scenarios For Futures Of Sustainability, Hannah Jones, Anette Lundebye
Nordes Conference Series
Understanding sustainability in terms of our complex, dynamic and inter-connected socio-ecological systems requires a different mindset or paradigm to the industrial mode of thinking that has influenced educational practice for the last century (Orr, 2004, Wood, 2007). Rather than fragmenting the world into separate disciplines for the sake of efficiency, an alternative whole systems approach to sustainability education aims to join-up different skill-sets and types of knowledge to improve effectiveness (Sterling, 2001). This requires a shift from the delivery of knowledge via top-down pedagogic methods, to designing the conditions for a critical co-learning to take place. Here, co-learners work together …
Re/Framing Design Trends: A Burkean Meta-Rhetorical Approach, Anneli Bowie
Re/Framing Design Trends: A Burkean Meta-Rhetorical Approach, Anneli Bowie
Nordes Conference Series
In this PhD research project I aim to investigate the rhetorical framing of communication design trends, by employing the theory of American rhetorician, Kenneth Burke. Although Burke is relatively unknown in design research circles, this study argues that he may provide valuable new perspectives on the rhetorical nature of design products, processes and discourses. Visual rhetoric is considered an important yet underdeveloped area of design inquiry, and an application of Burke’s rhetorical theories may prove valuable in addressing this need. Furthermore, I intend to show how Burke’s dialectical approach, as seen in his interrogations of historical transitions, may prove particularly …

Rocksect: Profiling Site Processes Through Translation Of Deep Fieldwork In The Fluid Margins Of Land/Water, Gini Lee, Lisa Diedrich
Rocksect: Profiling Site Processes Through Translation Of Deep Fieldwork In The Fluid Margins Of Land/Water, Gini Lee, Lisa Diedrich
Nordes Conference Series
Rocksect expands a collaborative landscape architectural research that aims to develop a method for capturing site qualities through deep fieldwork-based empirical enquiry and interpretation. The authors regard this method as a critical component of the conceptual design act. Their journeys are termed ‘travelling transects’ and nurture a concept that conveys both a scientific regard – the transect – and a more ephemeral condition of movement across time and place – the travel. Its theoretical foundation relies on a reinterpretation of Alexander von Humboldt’s transareal and mobile empirical science. Over the past years the authors have conducted several travelling transects in …
Split Vision Urbanism: Investigating Visual Connections In Los Angeles, Per-Johan Dahl, Peter Palvén
Split Vision Urbanism: Investigating Visual Connections In Los Angeles, Per-Johan Dahl, Peter Palvén
Nordes Conference Series
Single-family residential zoning continues to be a key tool for carrying out planning policy in Los Angeles, and a praxis that instantly hampers design innovation from correlating suburban development with new socio-economic and cultural tendencies. An architectural ecology is, today, surfacing in Los Angeles, where generic suburban houses camouflage experimental practices that challenge the constraints of single-family residential zoning. Reconceptualizing the suburban backyard, these experimental practices pursue design intervention under the radar of planning administration to implement new forms and uses in Los Angeles. Drawing from such observations this design research project encompasses an on-going investigation at the intersection between …
Vital Materialism Design Methodologies For Social Change, Ricarda Bigolin, Clemens Thornquist
Vital Materialism Design Methodologies For Social Change, Ricarda Bigolin, Clemens Thornquist
Nordes Conference Series
Socially responsible design education is often grounded in case-based approaches. The problem with these approaches to socially responsible design is that they are usually based on a given set of design methods. Such methods respond to conditions of practice that are outmoded and don’t respond to the contemporary presence of the image, and it’s affect on materiality and the body in design practice. This is a problem in relation to evolving ecologies where new methods are needed to tackle problems that arise because of the change. In response, this work tries to develop alternative design methods for social change, particularly …
Service Ecosystem: Empowering Textile Artisans’ Communities Towards A Sustainable Future, Francesco Mazzarella, Carolina Escobar-Tello, Val Mitchell
Service Ecosystem: Empowering Textile Artisans’ Communities Towards A Sustainable Future, Francesco Mazzarella, Carolina Escobar-Tello, Val Mitchell
Nordes Conference Series
The global economic and environmental crisis seems to be leading to the end of a ‘linear economy’ based on consumption and waste, while setting the ground for redistributed micro-productions, inspired by new ethics of sustainability and cutting-edge economic models. With this in mind, this paper is focused on exploring textile artisans’ communities, bottom-up and human-centred aggregations embodying the craft atmosphere of a territory due to physical proximity and shared material cultural background. Such communities are engaged in giving form and meaning to local natural fibres and managing the process of making culturally and socially significant apparel. Literature on textile artisanship …

Plant Hotel in Nordes 2015 is a hotel for plants, where the local members of Konstfack check in their plants and the conference participants water the plants. Each plant owner, who would trust the setup of the conference and its participants, brings their plants. In addition each plant giver will be asked to choose the ‘right’ school amongst all the participant schools to specifically water his/her plant, and the reasons would be noted and also exhibited with the plant. The participants from the chosen school are asked to take care of the plant during the conference. With ‘Choose the right …

How Much For A Tree? How Planning Goes Wild And The Values Of Trees., Gunilla Bandolin, Monika Gora
Nordes Conference Series
This exhibition item contains a book, “How much for a tree” and a 4 channel video installation. The book investigates a planning process in Malmö, that turns out as a disaster. A hundred year old park is destroyed. The investigation of the process is done in the form of a drama, where all the people involved get to tell their version. The question that is posed is: What are the values that are destroyed by this planning disaster? The video installation tries to give an answer to the question from the authors’ point of view. What are the values of …
The Roles Of Sketching In Design: Mapping The Tension Between Functions In Design Sketches, Peter Vistisen
The Roles Of Sketching In Design: Mapping The Tension Between Functions In Design Sketches, Peter Vistisen
Nordes Conference Series
This paper examines how the role of sketching in design process has been disseminated previously through a review of prior perspectives into the field. We identify that the studies of design sketching has been dominated by two perspectives: studies into what is known as ‘visual thinking’ (Goldschmidt 1991, Schön & Wiggins 1992, Tversky et al. 1999), which examines the designers reflective conversation with the sketch, and a second perspective on sketching as way of ‘visual communication’ with others in the design process (Lugt 2005, Schütze 2003, Buxton 2010). We raise the question of whether it is reasonable to combine the …

We present an experimental approach to sustain cultural heritage objects like handmade socks linked with issues such as knowledge transfer for the continuity of craftsmanship. The project amplifies the intuitive production process of cultural objects and learning by doing aspect of handicrafts via diagrammatic drawings while questioning the problematic market conditions by symbolic use of newspaper. Improvised process of our stitching on the paper mimicing traditional crafts is then explored with successive drawings to attain a methodology.

In this paper we explore how design may be used as a critical and creative tool to discuss how design is gendered in the contemporary gynaecology examination in Sweden. The aim of our paper is to uncover the veiled gender norms in this problem area and discuss the consequences for women. Our methods include a Gender Swapping Approach, centred around the chair currently used in most female gynaecological examinations. We used the results of our conducted interviews together with related previous research, which reveals that a majority of women have negative and sometimes even traumatic experiences of the gynaecology chair. …
Designing For Social Integration: An Ecological Approach To Language Learning, Young-Ae Hahn, Tania Jimena Rodriguez-Kaarto
Designing For Social Integration: An Ecological Approach To Language Learning, Young-Ae Hahn, Tania Jimena Rodriguez-Kaarto
Nordes Conference Series
Cultural knowledge and professional language are key for mid-level second language (L2) learners’ progress and job competency, but in Finland, their needs are not fully met. This paper draws from cognitive and ecological theories for a new approach to L2 learning: activity-based curricula with personalized, multi-sensory materials and dialogical, collaborative tasks. A system with four learning modules (observation, writing, interaction, and speech) that holistically tackles different areas of language competency, while absorbing cultural knowledge, is suggested. The modules, combined with an online space for students, teachers, and participating Finnish citizens to collect and share multi-modal materials, will assist lessons customized …
Gardening Communities As Urban Archives And Social Resource In Urban Planning, Elisabet Nilsson, Wiman Veronica
Gardening Communities As Urban Archives And Social Resource In Urban Planning, Elisabet Nilsson, Wiman Veronica
Nordes Conference Series
This exploratory paper presents initial thoughts on a research theme described as Urban Archiving. The aim is to explore potentials of urban gardening communities both to be read as urban archives and to become platforms for transmitting knowledge and connecting different communities of practices that engage in urban development and societal change (e.g., design communities and urban gardening communities). Issues to be explored concern how practices of urban archiving can contribute to a more holistic view of our cities, including urban gardening communities that engage in urban sustainable development but are seldom invited to influence matters of urban development.

This paper presents a design case study of a summer school that brought together a multidisciplinary group of early-career professionals to explore ideas relating to new technologies in an urban context. The organisers of the summer school took an explicitly designinformed approach to the event, specifically a ‘critical design’ approach. The aspiration of the organisers was that the school activities would lead to the creation of an exhibition of artefacts and visual media expressing the ideas explored during the school. The expectation of generating exhibition quality outputs influenced the participants’ experience of the event, and this paper describes the process …
Engaged Sustainable Design: Creating Moral Agency, Louise St. Pierre
Engaged Sustainable Design: Creating Moral Agency, Louise St. Pierre
Nordes Conference Series
This paper integrates my journeys into the wilderness of northern British Columbia and the Alberta Prairies with my reflections on the relationship of sustainable design theories with an ethical practice of sustainable design. Drawing on deep ecology, Buddhism, and animism, I contend that the drive within research to connect natural systems theories to design practice is inherently instrumental and eludes the truths of the natural world. Within the domain of sustainable design, this instrumentalism reinforces an anthropocentric worldview that, as humans, we are separate from and more important than the unboundaried ecology of animals, plants, minerals and elementals (earth, water, …
Design Thinking And Business Innovation Strategy In Creative Smes: A Comparative Study Between The Uk And Thailand, Akapan Thienthaworn
Design Thinking And Business Innovation Strategy In Creative Smes: A Comparative Study Between The Uk And Thailand, Akapan Thienthaworn
Nordes Conference Series
The integration of design thinking into strategic management leading to design business success is an emerging debate within design research. Design thinking is crucial to the creative economy but its implementation is prone to unpredictable changes, particularly in an organisation's external or internal environments. This can have a measurable effect upon the performance of small and medium sized design businesses (SME’s). Whilst research into design thinking into SMEs design business environments is well recognized there is a lack dearth of literature based on discussing how design thinking can influence a businesses innovation strategy for supporting SMEs design businesses development. The …

Inorganisms: An Emergent Approach To Sustainability, David Kadish, Aleksandra Dulic
Nordes Conference Series
Inorganisms is a workshop that engages participants in a process of creation through reflective practice as a way of building and understanding complexity. It models a design process aimed at addressing large-scale global issues that asks designers to create solutions on a local scale, while forming interconnections to neighbouring places and designers. The workshop takes a pragmatic approach to learning through design and experience in order to come to a better understanding of complex, emergent systems. Participants are asked to design and create an inorganic organism from provided building blocks. Each inorganism communicates with other inorganisms, ultimately creating an emergent …
