Caddo Inspired Coil Pots, Jordan Weaver Apr 2019

Caddo Inspired Coil Pots, Jordan Weaver

Undergraduate Research Conference

When my bosses, John Handley and Alisa Steed, asked me to plan an educational program to go along with the upcoming Contemporary Caddo art show at the Cole Art Center I knew I wanted to find an art lesson to teach children. Creating is a great way to teach children about history because it invites them to take an active role in their education, rather than passively listening. After learning that traditional Caddo potters created coil pots out of clay, I knew I wanted to teach this art form to children in the community. Making coil pots requires children to …

Exploration Of Gender Portrayals In Marvel Comics, Chiagozie Nwasuruba

Undergraduate Research Conference

Comic books have been a major part of American pop culture since around the 1930s. These comic books depicted ordinary people who, through some sort of accident or happenstance, gained superpowers. People who could lift cars over their heads or leap over buildings in a single bound. Comic books have a long history. The history of comics is divided into six ages: the Golden Age, the Silver Age, the Bronze Age, the Plastic Age, the Revival Age, and the present. There have been many different comic book companies over the years, but at the forefront of comic book culture, there …

The Artist Residency And Lumen Printing, Austin Cullen Apr 2019

The Artist Residency And Lumen Printing, Austin Cullen

Undergraduate Research Conference

The artist residency is a critical and informative experience that is privileged to few, and revered by many. Creating work in a completely foreign environment can yield beautiful and new work that the artists could have never conceived of making. Artwork could be made about anything, but choosing a specific subject matter, or theme, can be very challenging. This difficulty arises from lack of knowledge, experience, or most importantly, being bored with one's surroundings. Artist residencies, often being in other countries and always providing a new atmosphere, can be a great way to jumpstart new artwork. Residencies are incredibly difficult …

5 X 5: Conceptual And Technical Challenge, Madeline Castillo

Undergraduate Research Conference

Goals for the Week to Week Project

As an undergraduate student pursuing a BFA, the apotheosis of my education is to find and develop the content for my art and convey it in the form of my capstone BFA exhibition. My creative research for this project consisted of building a finished work of art each week during a five-week time period. The intent of the project was to expedite concept development and increase my personal technical speed while focusing on craftsmanship and design. Having seven days to respond to a content prompt, I was challenged to focus on creating without …

“Happiest Delineation:” Literature, Reading Habits, And Characterization In Austen’S "Northanger Abbey", Emily Crider Apr 2019

“Happiest Delineation:” Literature, Reading Habits, And Characterization In Austen’S "Northanger Abbey", Emily Crider

Undergraduate Research Conference

In response to the strictly gendered society of Regency England, Jane Austen’s 1817 Gothic parody novel Northanger Abbey offers insight to the nuances of gender disparities. As such, the use of a gendered and historical critical approach throughout the project allows for a more comprehensive view of the societal expectations and taboos of 18th-century reading.

A Pilgrim’S Progress For The Digital, Post-Human(Ist) Age?: Social And Religious Allegory In Russell Banks’S Lost Memory Of Skin, David J. Buehrer Dr.

South East Coastal Conference on Languages & Literatures (SECCLL)

In Lost Memory of Skin (2011), his twelfth novel, Russell Banks continues his exploration of the dark underbelly of American society—in this instance, the moral wilderness of a group of convicted sex offenders exiled to living beneath a concrete causeway in the south Florida city of Calusa, a fictionalized Miami. Banks, who has long been “our premier chronicler of the doomed and forgotten American male” (Schulman 8), focuses in Lost on a twenty-two-year-old parolee referred to throughout only as “The Kid.” While guilty and duly convicted of propositioning an underage girl online for sex, The Kid is still presented in …

Realismo Y Exasperación: Un Estudio De Los Personajes Femeninos En La Pata De La Sota Y La Nona De Roberto Cossa, Mariana Pensa

South East Coastal Conference on Languages & Literatures (SECCLL)

First Among Equals: The Pre-Nicene Christian Eucharist In The Context Of Greco-Roman Mystery Cults, Jacob Hayden Apr 2019

First Among Equals: The Pre-Nicene Christian Eucharist In The Context Of Greco-Roman Mystery Cults, Jacob Hayden

Student Research Symposium

The Eucharist, a ritual meal which is also called communion, the Mass, and the Lord's Supper, is, for many Christians, the central activity of their worship. This study examines the phenomenon of the Eucharist in its early, Greco-Roman context, focusing on the period between the missions of Paul up to the First Council of Nicaea (approximately 50 C.E. to 325 C.E.). First, it describes the early practice of the Eucharist and then compares it to other ritual meals celebrated in Greek and Roman religion, especially the "mystery cults" of Demeter, Isis, Mithras, Cybele, and Dionysus. Christians of this period, the …

Euskadi: St. Ignatius Of Loyola (The Basque), Frankie Urrutia-Smith

Student Research Symposium

St. Ignatius of Loyola is most recognized as the founder of the Society of Jesus, commonly known as the Jesuit order, whose members often led the charge of the Catholic Counter-Reformation. During a long convalescence from an injury in battle, he experienced a spiritual awakening and dedicated his life to living as the Saints had lived. Ignatius was canonized less than a century after his death and has been venerated as a Saint ever since. In fact, he is the patron saint of the Basque people, who call themselves the Euskadi. The events of his later life, especially the spiritual …

Pines Of Rome, Sam Wise Apr 2019

Pines Of Rome, Sam Wise

Student Research Symposium

When Musicians analyze or listen to multi-movement works, they often focus on each movement individually and how it contrasts to those around it. When analyzing the piece Piece Pines of Rome by Respighi, a musician may interpret the form differently than non-musicians because of their perspective. We plan to pull the listener out of the small scale and have them experience the work as a whole, which can be interpreted as an entirely different form than what a musician might see. One disadvantage musicians have is when they look at music they are typically analyzing its music theory or performance …

What The Fugue? An Exploration Of Musical Form Featuring Bach's Fugue In G Minor, Alexander Pierson, Logan Tolman

Student Research Symposium

Almost everyone knows the tune of Bach's famous Fugue in G minor, also referred to as the "little fugue", but most people are unaware of the musical intricacies that make it such a masterpiece. The Caine Brass Quintet will present an analysis of the structural elements that make up the form of this piece as well as perform the piece to demonstrate everything taught in the presentation. Most people don't know exactly what it means for a piece to be a fugue, so we will define that and what makes the form unique. When this piece is played on the …

Gender, Power And Representation Of The Body In The Water Margin, Nicholas Grooms Apr 2019

Gender, Power And Representation Of The Body In The Water Margin, Nicholas Grooms

Student Research Symposium

Situated in the North Song dynasty of the 11th century, the Chinese classic novel The Water Margin illustrates multiple ideals of gendered identities, ranging from being sharply distinct and divisive to areas of ambiguity and continued negotiation between the sexes. On the one hand, there are instances of female heroes in The Water Margin who challenge the Confucian notions of women and their role, they are still bound by culturally embedded comparisons. The Water Margin defines and depicts its heroines as such because of their adherence to masculinity traits and actions, and not that of their traditional feminine qualities. Representations …

Brahms: Experience And Expression In Music, Gianna Patchett, Nicky Jamison

Student Research Symposium

We will compare and contrast the musical form of two Brahms sonatas (Cello No. 1 in E Minor and Viola No. 2 in Eb Major) and seek to draw conclusions as to how the events leading up to and surrounding these compositions may have influenced Brahms' formal decisions. Through this research we will to bring to light how personal experiences can influence the creative processes. We will also gain insight as to how this knowledge may change the way performers interpret these pieces. We will study the musical form of each sonata as well as the context in which they …

Art Gallery, Bria Rice

Show Your Stripes Research and Creative Showcase

My art gallery is a compilation of photography between the years of 2012-2016. Today, I do not do photography as much as I did back then. It was something not only that I was good at but it was something that I enjoyed growing up. I started off receiving a camera and taking pictures of things outside. I then begin to find small interesting things in nature like a lady bug on a leaf for example. As time went on, I developed a love for photography and expanded to specializing in editing, graphic design, and photoshoots. Photography is a hobby …

Narrative And Christian Education, Heather Van Itallie Apr 2019

Narrative And Christian Education, Heather Van Itallie

Celebration of Research

Story is often viewed as nonessential fluff, especially with an increased emphasis on efficiency. However, this project explored how developmental research and practical theology make it clear that Christian education, especially when ministering to children, ought to emphasize how children fit into the metanarrative, or Story of God and God’s people, as found in scripture. Specifically, my research explored Christian education as it is centered around the Biblical narrative, using a pedagogy that affirms narrative as an effective cognitive tool that leads students to understand reality and externalizes their internal understanding of abstracts. I then clarified that Christian education must …

Gangsta Rap As Political And Rhetorical Discourse, Emma Van Drie Apr 2019

Gangsta Rap As Political And Rhetorical Discourse, Emma Van Drie

Celebration of Research

The mid 1980s through the 1990s, during the War on Crime Era, was marked by radicalized fear regarding the observed threat of criminality to society. Politicians voiced their intentions to crack down on crime, and a close association of young African American men in low-income areas with criminality became widespread. During this period when anti-crime rhetoric, arguably manifesting as racism, permeated American media and culture, gangsta rap surfaced in predominately African American, urban neighborhoods throughout the U.S.

Gangsta rap played an essential and highly complex role in shaping political rhetorical discourse surrounding the criminal justice system in the mid 1980s …

Student Research Symposium

Participants in this group are Amanda McDonald, Amy Loertscher, Jose Ayala, and Laura Corrigan. Sara Bakker is our mentor for this project. She can be contacted at [email protected]. Music theory plays a foundational role in music therapy. The basis of music theory supports all forms of music. These musical forms can be manifest through performance, pedagogy, and even music therapy. To have a better understanding how to fully access these areas, a knowledge of music theory is required. Specifically, music theory plays a significant role in compositional settings within music therapy. Songwriting or composition is an effective form of treatment …

Ternary Through Time: Why Understanding Form Enhances Casual Listening, Mckenna Brunson, Danielle Casós, Nick Walker Apr 2019

Ternary Through Time: Why Understanding Form Enhances Casual Listening, Mckenna Brunson, Danielle Casós, Nick Walker

Student Research Symposium

This presentation will compare the use of ternary form from two different time periods to support our claim that ternary form creates an enjoyable experience for the listener because of the devices used in the form. We will be performing and presenting our analysis of Chopin's Nocturne in C minor (Op. 48 No. 1) and Friends by Joe Hisaishi. The first was written in the mid-nineteenth century and the second in the early twenty-first century, but both maintain a similar structure, showing the effectiveness of this form in creating memorable and gratifying experience. Our research on this topic will benefit …

Composition In Theme And Variations Form, Tyler Wray, Kaelie Gillepsie, Riley Sue, Morgan Holmes

Student Research Symposium

We decided to study theme and variations composition because we found that it is very relevant and applicable to what we are learning in our Music Theory class. Variations form is also accessible to listeners and beginning composers. We hope that after our presentation, those listening will feel more comfortable in listening to and creating their own piece Theme and Variations form is a standard form of musical composition where a simple, unembellished melody is used as a theme and then repeated several times with melodic, rhythmic, harmonic, or other variations. We will take a theme and variations piece, Mozart's …

A Tale Of Two Bonnies: Comparing “Lost Cause” Narratives And Post-War Memory From The American Civil War And The 1745 Jacobite Rebellion Through Art, William Robert Tharp

Student Scholar Showcase

In the cultures of Scotland after the 1745 Jacobite Rebellion and the American South after the Civil War, defeatist memories and art featured prominently in mythmaking and served as a focal point for many who wished to make political statements or critiques of current realities. In Scotland, romanticism revolving around “Bonnie Prince Charlie” and the Jacobites in 1745 lessened the burden of defeat for many. Contextualizing their loss within a broader historical framework, which stressed different features depending on the group’s purpose, some Scots utilized Jacobite memory as a potent political critique of Scotland’s place within Great Britain. Others, like …
