Revitalization In Philadelphia, 1940-1970: Rebuilding A City But Straining Race Relations, Abigail E. Millender
Young Historians Conference
This paper examines government and privately sponsored revitalization projects in inner city and Center City Philadelphia from 1940-1970. These projects—including the construction of rail lines connecting Center City to the suburbs, changes to the National Housing Act, and the revitalization of Society Hill—were meant to bring investment back into the city after the economy had declined from de-industrialization. These projects successfully rebuilt the inner city’s economy, however, they ultimately hurt African-American and minority populations and encouraged segregation. The revitalization of Center City over other parts of inner city and the perpetuation of subprime loans displaced many African Americans, lowered home …
Damming The Columbia River And Its Impact On Celilo Falls, Dalton R. Stormo
Damming The Columbia River And Its Impact On Celilo Falls, Dalton R. Stormo
Young Historians Conference
This paper discusses the history of Native Americans at Celilo Falls and in the Dalles Area, as well as the impact of white settlers moving there. It focuses on the impact this had on the river itself, through fisheries and various damming projects, and how it affected the lives of the various tribes surrounding the river. It examines the impacts of damming the Columbia River at various points along the river, and what that did to life for the River Tribes. The thesis of this paper is that the flooding of Celilo Falls by the Dalles Dam was a final …
Translation Wars: The Influence Of Semantics And Translation On The More-Tyndale Polemic, Annika H. Marshall
Translation Wars: The Influence Of Semantics And Translation On The More-Tyndale Polemic, Annika H. Marshall
Young Historians Conference
The More-Tyndale polemic was one of many debates during the Protestant Reformation, a time of great religious change and conflict. Because of this, many scholars who examine the lengthy debate view it as a pure reflection of the typical Reformation arguments of the century, and assume it to be a debate of ubiquitous opposing religious ideals. This paper, however, argues that while many of these Reformation topics were present, the polemic was primarily fueled by clash over semantics and the topic of Biblical translation. Through this unique approach to a classic debate, one may better understand Christian theology’s inherent struggle …

Elementary, My Dear Watson: An Undergraduate Comic Books Course Using Enterprise Ai And Tei, Steven W. Holloway, Brian Flota
Elementary, My Dear Watson: An Undergraduate Comic Books Course Using Enterprise Ai And Tei, Steven W. Holloway, Brian Flota
Digital Initiatives Symposium
Two librarians taught an Honors course at James Madison University titled “Comic Books, Analysis, and Digital Scholarship.” This non-coding-requirement course introduced students to the critical study of comic books by way of DH and online tools like IBM Watson. JMU Libraries has a growing collection of comic books (more than 10,000 single issues) and a commitment to foster DH research, hence rationale for the course. Students were introduced to online annotation platforms and comic-book-extended TEI (Text Encoding Initiative), using spreadsheet entry to code a Golden Age comic book in the public domain. In addition, the students used enterprise AI (IBM-Watson) …

Digital Initiatives Symposium
In November 2018, Stanford Law School Library unveiled to the public an online exhibit of more than 100 oral histories of American women lawyers, scholars, judges, and government officials who helped diversify the legal profession in the late twentieth century. Called the “Women Trailblazers in the Law” Oral History Project, it is a collaboration between Stanford Law School Library and the American Bar Association. Our presentation discusses the details of the analog to digital preservation process, whereby the physical collection was converted into digital formats suitable for long term archival storage as well as online access for the general public. …

This interdisciplinary panel will discuss a long-term project, “The Ball State Digital History Portal,” as a case study in digital initiatives in instruction and undergraduate research that features a collaboration between disciplinary faculty, an archivist, and a digital librarian. In this course, “History in the Digital Age,” undergraduate and graduate students from a variety of majors research, create, and build digital thematic research collection projects on topics in university history that aim to answer scholarly inquiries by conducting primary source research, selecting and digitizing archival materials, and creating metadata to accompany their curated items. An important part of the collaboration …

Lightning Talk: The Language Archive: Migrating To An Easier, Sustainable Open-Source Solution., Jeroen Geerts
Digital Initiatives Symposium
The Language Archive at the Max Planck Institute Nijmegen (https://archive.mpi.nl) is an extensive online repository of language resources. The archive was developed using in-house solutions, including metadata creation tools, depositing tools and an archive-browser. Development had been going on for more than 15 years, but was difficult and expensive to maintain. Additionally, some of these tools had were fairly complex to use, not meeting current user needs. Therefore, the choice was made to migrate to a more sustainable open-source solution, easier to use, maintain and to develop upon.
This presentation will provide insight in choosing a new repository solution, …
Lightning Talk: Re/Mapping The Archives: Repository Content For The Digital Humanities And Cartographer, Michael R. Howser
Lightning Talk: Re/Mapping The Archives: Repository Content For The Digital Humanities And Cartographer, Michael R. Howser
Digital Initiatives Symposium
The print map, once seen as a unique and preservation worthy collection treated uniquely as a collection housed within a separate library or library space, has seen a precipitous decline in usage since Google Maps and other online tools emerged on the scene starting in 2005. With many print map collections experiencing declines in researcher requests per year, this inevitable decline of print map usage underscores the difficulty in discovering maps via the library catalog, search engines, and/or via finding aids. As collection space is pinned against demands for student space, print map collections are targets for capturing additional space …

Rising Feminism In South Korea: A Timely Counter To Sexism, Neha Cariappa
Creative Activity and Research Day - CARD
My aim in this research is to create awareness about protecting women’s rights as well as supporting the feminist movement in South Korea. Using archival sources, as well as survey results from South Korean women, I assess the impact that the #MeToo movement, examine the reaction of South Korean men to the rising feminism movement and the impact of social media on the culture of protest in South Korea. In short, this research investigates discrimination against women in South Korea, how it has affected its society today, and thus analyzes a few positive solutions to this perennial and critical issue.

STEM Student Research Symposium Posters
While homosexuality exists in all civilizations of life and has been seen in various perspectives by all peoples, it is often seen as a taboo subject matter. Especially when considering the more religious, rather heteronormative environment that is seen in Indian communities. With my research, it is with this research that one will hope to learn what it is about India's socio-cultural environment that puts homosexuality in such a negative light.
Communicative Challenges Of Reintegrating Veterans, Arnaldo Gallegos
Communicative Challenges Of Reintegrating Veterans, Arnaldo Gallegos
Creative Activity and Research Day - CARD
Research shows that communication in the transition from active duty to military veteran provides several challenges. Communication on active duty is reported as clear and explicit in its hierarchic relations. Communication with civilians can at first be cryptic and only implicitly hierarchic. On active duty, a service member relies on the chain of command for medical needs. Afterwards, veterans must take initiative to ensure healthcare needs are met. Veterans communicating about employment must put military experience into terms that civilian employers understand or risk settling for less prestigious and lower paying jobs in the civilian workforce.

Mentality: Promoting Social Change Through Design, Rommel Ballesteros
Creative Activity and Research Day - CARD
In “Mentality: Promoting Social Change Through Design,” I will discuss design’s potential to spark discussion and inspire social change. These themes will be explored through the examination of Mentality, a concept for a men’s self-care kit, which aims to normalize and promote the awareness of mental health while also bringing to light certain gender disparities in attitudes towards such topics. Through this analysis, I hope to demonstrate the importance of curated aesthetics in everyday life as a powerful tool for social change, as well as to highlight the designer’s responsibility to be aware of the implications and influence of their …
“Paying” The Way For A Better Bart Future: A Call For Better Enforcement Of Fare Evasion Policies And Strategic Planning At Bart, Ethan S. Tan
Creative Activity and Research Day - CARD
The Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) system has undoubtedly shaped the way the San Francisco Bay Area operates today. BART has molded itself to becoming a popular form of transportation for citizens of the area. However, numerous problems have arisen in recent years in regard to the overall “healthiness” of the BART system with its ex-aging fleet of trains, undertrained staff, lack of BART Police presence, rampant illegal drug use, etc. which has made BART unpopular with riders. The root cause of these problems through, is the lost revenue through “stolen” rides. At any one of BART’s 48 stations in …
What's Left Of Gender?: The Metaphysics Of Woman, Man, And Non-Binary Identities, Nina Kamangar
What's Left Of Gender?: The Metaphysics Of Woman, Man, And Non-Binary Identities, Nina Kamangar
Creative Activity and Research Day - CARD
There is a gender revolution underway. Progressive movements urge acceptance of transgender and non-binary gender identities apart from the male or female designations assigned at birth. Surrounding this, there has been confusion about what gender is and what it means to identify with one. Some accuse new perspectives on gender to be incoherent. Others support this movement, but acknowledge gender as an inherently restrictive concept to eventually be abolished. Is it true that genders are becoming empty categories, or can something be salvaged? I offer a pro-revolutionary theory of gender that is inclusive of these new identities while remaining intelligible.

Modernizing the “Hermit Kingdom”:
Bridging the Cultural and Economic Gap through Soft Power Diplomacy
Following the Korean War, the Republic of Korea embraced modernization and rose as an economic power while its Northern counterpart employed isolationist policies and acquired the name “Hermit Kingdom.” In recent years, however, the “Hermit Kingdom” is exhibiting potential for change in under the Kim Jong-Un regime. In the wake of continued economic strife, shifting East Asian political dynamics, and insecure power consolidation, Kim appeared in the international scene with a different attitude: eagerness for dialogue. Such change in Pyongyang’s political stance engenders renewed hope for …

Bloom is an herbal apothecary that uses natural remedies to help boost one’s mood, while simultaneously starting a conversation about mental health. Branding for this hypothetical company was inspired by both traditional herbal apothecary designs as well as modern prescription medication bottles. The figure of a relaxed hand interwoven with delicate flowers adds a humanistic touch to the brand’s identity.
Disillusioning The Illusion Of Choice: A Rogerian Approach On Electoral College Reform, Mei Lin
Disillusioning The Illusion Of Choice: A Rogerian Approach On Electoral College Reform, Mei Lin
Creative Activity and Research Day - CARD
The Electoral College is used by the United States of America to elect the president every four years. It has been amended and updated several times; however, it remains an extremely convoluted and outdated system. Four presidencies were the product of incongruent elections –– the candidate won the electoral college but lost the popular vote –– and each of these presidencies resulted in immense consequences. Reforming the current electoral college will be difficult, but it is extremely vital and necessary. The American election system must be restructured so that it may fairly and adequately represent the voices of its citizens.

This is a creative project which examines the horrific mystery behind a real cursed poem. One poem was all it took to create a dent in American history. When a cursed poem is produced in the 1600’s during the time of the Salem Witch Trials, the poem travels through events of American trauma, allowing the curse to affect people in different time periods. The story focuses on moments in American History, stemming from the Salem Witch Trials, advancing forward into the era of the Civil War, World War 2, and 9/11. This piece that blends fiction and nonfiction to convey …
The Nineteenth Century British Workhouse: Mission Not Accomplished, Brenda Derin
The Nineteenth Century British Workhouse: Mission Not Accomplished, Brenda Derin
Scholarly and Creative Works Conference (2015 - 2021)
ABSTRACT:
How to correct poverty in a society is extremely complex. In the nineteenth century, the British struggled to house, feed and care for the unemployed and destitute men, women and children created by the Industrial Revolution. Many in the upper classes considered poverty a moral failure, yet they had little impetus to end it. Poverty, as defined by an inability to provide for one’s needs due to a variety of factors, was seen as necessary, for without it there would be no motivation for the lower classes to work and provide a luxurious life for the wealthy.
Although some …

“Pretty Is As Pretty Does:” Child Beauty Pageants In Deep East Texas, Taryn Lenert
Undergraduate Research Conference
Introduction
Do child beauty pageants affect contestants’ perception of gender norms, gender performance, and confidence? To answer this question, three observations of pageants, three face-to-face interviews, and survey responses from two East Texas pageant Facebook groups will be analyzed through the lens of West and Zimmerman’s theoretical concept of doing gender (1987). Deep East Texas is unique due to the fact that much of its culture originates in old southern views of beauty, the norm of hyper-femininity, and the importance of traditional gender roles in both public and private life.

Understanding how others interact with religion and spirituality in both broad and narrow terms can aid in successfully reaching a captive audience. Here, information regarding relationships with religion and spirituality will be reported to understand trends in spiritual involvement among SFA students. The latter of these two is a potentially useful resource for campus spiritual organizations looking to understand and expand their current audience and increase service attendance.
