Preserving Theoretically-Grounded Functions Across Media Platforms In Interaction Design, Brian Sekelsky, Matthew Peterson, Cesar Delgado, Karen B. Chen
Preserving Theoretically-Grounded Functions Across Media Platforms In Interaction Design, Brian Sekelsky, Matthew Peterson, Cesar Delgado, Karen B. Chen
IASDR Conference Series
Designers often address the continuity of user experiences across various media platforms. Features are the focus of media development. But the media-dependency of features means that truly preserving the essence of one feature across media platforms, in a process of cross-media translation, can result in superficially dissimilar features. We describe function mapping as an aid in this translation, in which design features are derived from theoretical assertions, and in turn an understanding of underlying functions permits the translation of features to other media platforms. We demonstrate this in a case study of translation from a VR installation, to portable VR, …

Scalable Ehmi: Automated Vehicles-Pedestrian Interactions Design Based On Gestalt Principles, Yunhui Gao, Luo Wang, Ziteng Zhang
IASDR Conference Series
The existing research on external human-machine interfaces (eHMIs) targeted at augmenting interactions between automated vehicles (AVs) and pedestrians has primarily concentrated on pedestrian crossings in one-to-one encounters. Nevertheless, in practical situations, pedestrians must assimilate additional information regarding the status of multiple vehicles while crossing. In order to enhance the efficacy of eHMIs in authentic situations, there is a requisite for more succinct and efficient information transmission. In response to this requirement, we have formulated an electronic Human-Machine Interface (eHMI) that is grounded on the Gestalt principle as the fundamental theoretical framework. We have assessed the efficacy of this approach through …

Textile Autobiographies: Crafting Shifting Identities With Refugee Communities, Francesco Mazzarella, Seher Mirza
IASDR Conference Series
With the rising mass displacement of people, rethinking and addressing the needs and aspirations of refugee communities and honouring their diverse cultures is needed. Historically, the textile heritage of minorities has often been subjected to cultural appropriation practices or systematically undervalued and ‘othered’ as ‘non-fashion’. Designers are often ‘parachuted’ into marginalised or disadvantaged communities premised on bringing their own knowledge and expertise to solve other people’s problems. However, there is growing recognition of the need to ‘decolonise’ such dominant approaches in collaborative design practice. Instead of re-enacting dominant power narratives, London-based refugees and asylum seekers were engaged in storytelling sessions …
