2020 Common Book Selection: Dreamland, Sam Quinones Oct 2020

2020 Common Book Selection: Dreamland, Sam Quinones

Common Book Program

With a great reporter's narrative skill and the storytelling ability of a novelist, acclaimed journalist Sam Quinones weaves together two tales of capitalism catastrophically run amok. The unfettered prescribing of pain medications during the 1990s reached its peak in Purdue Pharma's campaign to market OxyContin, its new, expensive--extremely addictive--miracle painkiller. Meanwhile, a massive influx of black tar heroin--cheap, potent, and originating from one small county on Mexico's west coast, independent of any drug cartel--assaulted small towns and midsize cities across the country, driven by a brilliant, almost unbeatable marketing and distribution system. Together these phenomena continue to lay waste to …

La Malinche According To The Indians, Camilla A. Townsend Oct 2020

La Malinche According To The Indians, Camilla A. Townsend

Rondel V. Davidson Endowed Lecture Series

La Malinche has long been cast as a traitor to her people in the Spanish conquest of Mexico. More recently we have been reminded that her life was hard and her choices few, and that she owed no loyalty to the Aztecs, who were her people’s enemy. It is more than time that we translate and analyze the Nahuatl-language comments made by Indians and for Indians in the 1500s. What did they think of la Malinche?

Rondel Davidson Endowed Lecture given by Dr. Camilla D. Townsend, Distinguished Professor of History at Rutgers.

Poetic Style And Innovation In Old English, Old Norse, And Old Saxon, Megan E. Hartman Oct 2020

Poetic Style And Innovation In Old English, Old Norse, And Old Saxon, Megan E. Hartman

Richard Rawlinson Center Series

This book traces the development of hypermetric verse in Old English and compares it to the cognate traditions of Old Norse and Old Saxon. The study illustrates the inherent flexibility of the hypermetric line and shows how poets were able to manipulate this flexibility in different contexts for different practical and rhetorical purposes. This analysis shows what degree of control the poets had over the traditional alliterative line, what effects they were able to produce with various stylistic choices, and how attention to poetic style aids literary analysis.

The Consistory And Social Discipline In Calvin's Geneva, Jeffrey R. Watt Oct 2020

The Consistory And Social Discipline In Calvin's Geneva, Jeffrey R. Watt

Liberal Arts Faculty Books

Created by John Calvin, the Consistory of Geneva was a quasi-tribunal entrusted with enforcing Reformed morality. Comprised of pastors and elders, this body met weekly and summoned people for a wide range of "sinful" behavior, such as drunkenness, dancing, blasphemy, or simply quarrels, and was a far more intrusive institution than the Catholic Inquisition. Among the thousands summoned during Calvin's ministry were a pair of women who were allegedly prophets, boys who skipped catechism to practice martial arts, and a good number of people begging for forgiveness for having renounced Protestantism out of fear of death. This superbly researched book, …

Authority And Dissent In Jewish Life, Leonard Greenspoon Oct 2020

Authority And Dissent In Jewish Life, Leonard Greenspoon

Studies in Jewish Civilization

Throughout the long history of Judaism, many individuals and groups have sought to wield authority on the basis of unique religious, social, familial, military, or political claims. Moving historically from the biblical period to the modern-day State of Israel, Authority and Dissent in Jewish Life discusses a range of those claims to authority from within the Jewish community itself.
