Supervisors Dr. Basil Masri Zada and Dr. Corey Beck bring together students from Ohio University’s Chemistry and Digital Art + Technology programs in a collaborative effort to make scientific concepts more accessible. Each artist has been assigned to work with a group of chemistry students, and they are then prompted to create an art poster with only the name of the compound. How do tabletop role-playing games transform complete newcomers into cohesive adventuring parties? This presentation introduces meta-collaboration as a framework for understanding session zero not as a preliminary conversation, but as the governance infrastructure that makes collaborative play possible. Using the Cosmic System (beta) as a qualitative case study, the presentation examines a distributed model of character creation in which players progress through multiple session-zero experiences before entering the first adventure as a team.

The Trattato dell’Alcibra Amuchabile is a pre-modern algebra text from c. 1365. It is written in a Tuscan dialect of Italian and is situated in the abbacus school tradition, schools that taught the mathematics needed for a mercantile society. Like all the algebra written in Italy at the time, it was inherited from al-Khwarizmi and, like his, written with no symbols—no x’s, y’s, plus signs, etc. It was what is sometimes called “rhetorical algebra.”  There is very little source  material available in English from this important era in the history of algebra.
