2022-2023 Artists Invoke the Powers of Community as They Bring Audiences Into Fiery, Mysterious, Illuminating Visions of Our World
Why are we speaking? To whom are we speaking? About whom are we speaking? How are we speaking? From what place are we speaking? A visceral work from a revolutionary company, assembling nine dancers in a frenzied, morphing mass. A constant flow of overflowing imagination that visualizes. Nine young dancers develop a series of images inspired by the daily lives of Black people in Brazil, creating poetry from these broken abandoned nothings.

We Exist Series 4: Quotes
Welcome to the fourth exhibit in the series of “We Exist”. In this section we have selected quotes that represent and explain how Maine’s Black residents’ create the processes behind their engagement in particular leisure activities. The quotes also highlight the particular types of leisure activities that Maine’s Black residents suggest that they are involved in. The quotes are taken from transcripts of the oral history project "'Home Is Where I Make It': African American Community and Activism in Greater Portland, Maine”. The interview subjects are all native to Maine or are longtime residents of Maine. The original intent of …

The Pittsburg Community Theatre was founded in a joint effort of the Pittsburg Parks and Recreation department and Pittsburg Area Arts and Crafts Association. Misty Maynard was appointed to access the feasibility of establishing a community theatre group, she then decided to stage a production of “The Music Man.” The community’s response proved incredibly positive and the project was deemed a success. On April 30, 1981, Pittsburg Community Theatre became a non-profit organization. The City of Pittsburg …

While Waiting For Rain: Community, Economy, And Law In A Time Of Change, John Henry Schlegel
Books
What might a sensible community choose to do if its economy has fallen apart and becoming a ghost town is not an acceptable option? Unfortunately, answers to this question have long been measured against an implicit standard: the postwar economy of the 1950s. After showing why that economy provides an implausible standard—made possible by the lack of economic competition from the European and Asian countries, winners or losers, touched by the war—John Henry Schlegel attempts to answer the question of what to do.
While Waiting for Rain first examines the economic history of the United States as well as that …

Addressing Health Disparities Among Musicians In Southern Nevada, Kimberly James, Jay J. Shen
Creative Collaborations
Although the benefits of arts & cultural activities on the general public have been identified in prior research, musicians, as well as other artists, often find themselves distanced from tangible benefits (e.g. stress reduction, increased socialization, increased coping skills, increased happiness & well-being). Therefore, we hypothesize that musical artists suffer from health issues, due to barriers to accessing needed care. This project takes a mixed method approach, with its quantitative component being survey research and its qualitative component based on the …
