L'Atelier Réel – Apprendre Le Français Au Niveau Intermédiaire, Kathryn Murphy-Judy

Open Textbooks and Course Materials

This resource is a proficiency-framed, communicative, and task-based e-textbook for Intermediate French II.

Because learners at this level primarily communicate in sentence-level responses about routine, everyday situations, the four units of this e-textbook focus on strengthening skills across the three modes of communication—interpretive, interpersonal, and presentational—while deepening intercultural competencies. Unit themes include:

  • presenting oneself and exploring bilingual, intersectional identity;
  • engaging in written, oral, and mediated exchanges on topics of personal interest
  • examining perspectives, products, and practices of francophone cultures and comparing them with one’s own; and
  • mapping linguistic and cultural competencies onto students’ future personal and professional goals.

Stoic Indulgence, Gratuitous Restraint: White Feelings And Campus Art, Bert Stabler Jan 2023

Stoic Indulgence, Gratuitous Restraint: White Feelings And Campus Art, Bert Stabler

Faculty Publications – Art

The 2010s saw a revival of reactionary politics on college campuses, which now appear to have paved the way for contemporary right-wing culture-war talking points regarding K–12 education. Revanchist attitudes around race, as well as gender and sexuality, can be linked to White Americans’ affective attachments to ideas of historical entitlement, which can be seen both in campus responses to university art programming and in acts of student vandalism. I describe a campus gallery exhibition I organized in 2016 around the theme of White affect, and I make connections between expressions of rage, anguish, and reasonableness on the part of …

Art Evading Confinement: Abolition As Universal Design, Albert Stabler Jan 2023

Art Evading Confinement: Abolition As Universal Design, Albert Stabler

Faculty Publications – Art

Universal Design, initially an approach to designing barrier-free architectural spaces for disabled people, has primarily been adapted to schooling through the Universal Design for Learning framework. Contemporary abolitionism is a visionary grassroots movement to make prisons and jails obsolete, which has been brought into education discourse primarily through considering urban public schools as institutions of policing and punishment. By considering these strategies for reforming and ending confinement, respectively, this essay argues for a more expansive understanding of access in education. The argument for their compatibility in arts education is articulated first through reviewing shared aspects of these two approaches, then …

American Inheritance: Liberty And Slavery In The Birth Of A Nation, 1765-1795, Edward J. Larson Jan 2023

American Inheritance: Liberty And Slavery In The Birth Of A Nation, 1765-1795, Edward J. Larson

Faculty Books

New attention from historians and journalists is raising pointed questions about the founding period: was the American revolution waged to preserve slavery, and was the Constitution a pact with slavery or a landmark in the antislavery movement? Leaders of the founding who called for American liberty are scrutinized for enslaving Black people themselves: George Washington consistently refused to recognize the freedom of those who escaped his Mount Vernon plantation. And we have long needed a history of the founding that fully includes Black Americans in the Revolutionary protests, the war, and the debates over slavery and freedom that followed. We …

This collection of poems, stories, travelogues and interviews presents women’s universally shared journeys, and encourages women to embrace risk, courage and social action, to move beyond complacency and restrictions imposed by stereotypic ageism, sexism, inequity, and discrimination. Dead Bird (1965/2016) By Margaret Wise Brown, Peter Shea Jan 2023

Dead Bird (1965/2016) By Margaret Wise Brown, Peter Shea

Picture Books

Children come upon a bird that has just died. It is still warm. They bury it, sing a song they have made up, and plant flowers. They visit the grave every day to put fresh flowers on it and to sing to the bird, until they forget. Margaret Wise Brown’s The Dead Bird is a story about how a new ritual happens, spontaneously, out of a shared experience of grief, expressing a shared reverence for one kind of life. The children are thinking, in a way: they are keeping something in mind for a long time, in a beautiful form. …

Alexander Von Humboldt: Explorer, Naturalist, And Environmental Pioneer (2019) By Danica Novgorodoff, Peter Shea

Picture Books

As a young boy, Alexander Von Humboldt came up with divergent questions about the birds and mountains and animals he saw, and brought all those questions together under two big questions that stayed important for him over a long life: “How are these things different?” and “How are they nevertheless connected?” As the reader watches Humboldt looking at a hawk and a mouse, volcanoes and farmland, palm trees and pine trees, Europe and Ecuador, Europeans and Indigenous people, one comes to expect what he will say: “They are different, and yet they are connected.” This idea is much bigger than …
