A Queer Take On Hell And The Hellmouth, Pre-Modern Era, Haley Brothers

Taking a look at pre-modern depictions of hell and its entrance, the hellmouth, this presentation uses the imagery seen in these pieces to bring about a new perspective on how hell may have been seen back when it was first being drawn up. Through a queer lens, these concepts are explored to have a deeper meaning as it applies to gender equality through divine punishment, all as seen in art that was made to depict the concepts of hell and the hellmouth when they were made with such detail. Members of the Grand Forks Business and Professional Women’s Club (GFBPWC) personified the intersection of consumer culture, Progressive reform, and the professionalization of women’s labor that occurred between 1890 and 1930. Their membership in the GFBPWC implied economic, political, and social empowerment and granted them an opportunity to actively participate in and transform their community. Not only were these professional women recognized as reputable, upstanding, and passionate members of their community, but they also saw themselves as agents of positive change and improvement within their own lives and for future generations. This thesis will explore the relationship between medical ethics and the American Civil War through a microhistorical approach. This includes analyzing the ways in which the physician-patient relationship was conducted and which medical practices were deemed ethical and by whom. Changes that occurred in medical ethics during the war will be analyzed and explained.

What is civil disobedience? Civil disobedience is often thought of as peaceful protesting or non-violent law breaking. However, the textbook definition is “the refusal to obey the demands or commands of a government or occupying power, without resorting to violence or active measures of opposition” (Britannica). Peaceful protesting has been an integral part of American history. Henry David Thoreau, Rosa Parks, and Martin Luther King Jr. were all civilly disobedient citizens who altered the course of history. Any and all protests, however, cannot be considered civil disobedience, since there are some requirements of this category.

By using Gertrude Stein’s two autobiographies, this thesis attempts to examine to use and evolution of play in writing. In The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas, play stands within the language and games that Stein invites her readers to engage in. By using Roger Caillois’ characteristics of play, Stein’s writing can be seen as different from the high, serious modernism at the time with writers like William Faulkner and T.S. Eliot. After the publication of Toklas, Stein reverted into a crippling writer’s block because she could no longer find interest in the world to think and write about. However, after …

Children’s Mercy Kansas City was founded in 1897 by sisters Drs. Alice Graham and Katharine Richardson. Their primary objective was to create a hospital where the children of Kansas City and surrounding areas could be treated regardless of their religion, race, or ability to pay. By the early 1920’s segregation became a huddle to accomplishing this dream. To circumvent this problem Dr. Katharine Richardson partnered with Dr. John E. Perry and the staff at Wheatley Provident Hospital, the first private Black hospital in Kansas City, MO, to establish the Mercy Model Ward. This ward provided pediatric care for the Black …

The Rural Futures Fund launched the Aspirations Incubator in 2017 as a six-year pilot initiative aimed at supporting youth development in rural Maine by increasing resiliency, fostering connections to communities, and expanding students’ awareness of opportunities beyond their everyday environments. The program partnered with select rural youth organizations to build capacity for mentoring-based programs serving students from seventh grade through high school graduation. Guided by the Trekkers Youth Programming Principles, the initiative focused on long-term mentorship, meaningful relationship-building, and community engagement. A comprehensive multi-year evaluation conducted by the Data Innovation Project at the University of Southern Maine examined the implementation …

Singing In Sequence: A Step-By-Step Approach To Sight-Singing For The College Musician, Andrew Conklin

Singing in Sequence contains short melodies organized into short chapters, each with a brief explanation of the new skills introduced. Each melody provides the student with opportunities to synthesize their musical skills and knowledge: students are asked to reflect on the music’s intervallic, harmonic, metrical, and phrase structure in addition to simply singing the melody. In this sense, the book treats sight singing as a tool for developing broader skills, such as constructing an aural image of notated music, quickly recognizing musical structures, and thinking analytically.
