Distinguishing Pearls From Fish Eyes: The Branch Lineage Genealogies Of The Descendants Of Confucius, Christopher Agnew

This paper examines the form and production of genealogies compiled by local branch-lineages of the descendants of Confucius, the Kongs. It highlights the way the Kongs in Qufu, the hometown of Confucius and the center of Kong power, exercised control over branch-lineage formation through the collection and approval of written genealogies. The paper pays particular attention to the crucial function of manuscripts in the compilation, drafting, and circulation of genealogical knowledge. Depending on the relationship between branch-lineages and the Kong ducal center, manuscript genealogies adopted different forms, either to align with norms established in Qufu, or to articulate alternative lineage …

Bridgeville Elementary: A Big History of a Small School is not a work of writing that is meant to be read from the beginning to the end. It is for those of us who only attended Bridgeville School for a short time but wanted to recapture those years. It is for teachers and students bitten by the nostalgia bug that want to revisit the school, (like Sean Byrd in 2024 or Mary Brandenburg (Jardin) in 1999) but don’t have the time or means to make a trip to the remote northwest.

This essay was written for the Norsk Bergverksmuseum (Norwegian Mining Museum) in

Kongsberg, Norway to provide a brief history of some of the ski jumpers from that small town

who competed in the U.S. and dominated the sport from the 1920s through the 1940s. This was

known as the Kongsberg Era, and the Kongsberg technique of ski jumping, developed by the

Ruud brothers, was the style used by most competitors.

In summer 2025, Mining museum staff contacted the Washington State Ski and

Snowboard Museum seeking information about ski jumping trophies in their collections that

were won by Kongsbergers in tournaments …
