Police Officers’ Perceptions Regarding Persons With Mental Retardation, Danielle M. Eadens
Police Officers’ Perceptions Regarding Persons With Mental Retardation, Danielle M. Eadens
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This study examined the attitudes held by police officers towards persons with mental retardation with regard to the domains of knowledge, social willingness, affect and contact. It also investigated relationships among group membership and perspectives towards mental retardation. An analysis of relationships between the four domains was also completed. A descriptive correlational design was employed to survey police officers, pairing the Social Distance Questionnaire with a researcher-designed instrument consisting of open-ended questions aligned with each domain. The sample included one hundred and eighty police officers from five different bureaus in one county in Central Florida.
Results of the study indicate …
Yeats, Eliot, And Apocalyptic Poetry, Nancy Helen Fletcher
Yeats, Eliot, And Apocalyptic Poetry, Nancy Helen Fletcher
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Yeats and Eliot merit comparison because they wrote poetry that has been described as apocalyptic in the same historical period and in the same general geographic area but described entirely different visions. These particular works of Yeats and Eliot are appropriate because they represent two widely varying viewpoints on the causes, nature and desirability of what each author felt would be the coming apocalypse. Therefore, more can be learned by comparing the very different outlooks of the poems than by considering each poem separately.
Yeats sees humanity as both the victim and the beneficiary of a series of inescapable historical …
Patch Reefs In Biscayne National Park, Fl: Sediments, Foraminiferal Distributions, And A Comparison Of Three Biotic Indicators Of Reef Health, Alexa Ramirez
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Coral cover remains highest on patch reefs at the northern end of the Florida reef tract. The reasons for this trend are not well understood, but may be related to the protection from extreme variations in water quality parameters provided by the near constant presence of islands at the north extent of the Florida Keys.
Three indices have been developed based on Foraminifera and sediment constituents. Two of the indices, the FORAM Index and the SEDCON Index, were developed to indicate the suitability of a reef environment for continued reef accretion. The third index, the Photic Index, is an assessment …
Manufacturing Process Design And Control Based On Error Equivalence Methodology, Shaoqiang Chen
Manufacturing Process Design And Control Based On Error Equivalence Methodology, Shaoqiang Chen
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Error equivalence concerns the mechanism whereby different error sources result in identical deviation and variation patterns on part features. This could have dual effects on process variation reduction: it significantly increases the complexity of root cause diagnosis in process control, and provides an opportunity to use one error source as based error to compensate the others.
There are fruitful research accomplishments on establishing error equivalence methodology, such as error equivalence modeling, and an error compensating error strategy. However, no work has been done on developing an efficient process design approach by investigating error equivalence. Furthermore, besides the process mean shift, …
The Effects Of Pre-Writing Strategy Training Guided By Computer-Based Procedural Facilitation On Esl Students’ Strategy Use, Writing Quantity, And Writing Quality, Darunee Dujsik
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Pre-writing strategies are conscious thoughts, actions, or behaviors used by writers when they plan before writing. Research in second language writing suggests that specific writing strategies related to writing purposes, audience, brainstorming, and organizing ideas are teachable and have a potential to improve the quantity and quality of writing produced by English as second language (ESL) learners. This study investigated the effects of computer-based pre-writing strategy training guided by procedural facilitation (Bereiter & Scardamalia, 1987) on intermediate ESL students' writing strategy use, writing quantity, and writing quality.
A sequential mixed methods design was utilized with an initial quasi-experimental phase followed …
On A Conjecture Involving Fermat's Little Theorem, John Clark
On A Conjecture Involving Fermat's Little Theorem, John Clark
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Using Fermat’s Little Theorem, it can be shown that Σmi=1 i m−1 ≡ −1 (mod m) if m is prime. It has been conjectured that the converse is true as well. Namely, that Σmi=1 i m−1 ≡ −1 (mod m) only if m is prime. We shall present some necessary and sufficient conditions for the conjecture to hold, and we will demonstrate that no counterexample exists for m ≤ 1012 .
High-Rise Neighborhood: Rethinking Community In The Residential Tower, Benjamin Hurlbut
High-Rise Neighborhood: Rethinking Community In The Residential Tower, Benjamin Hurlbut
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Within the United States, a growing sense of detachment exists. Conditions in both urban and suburban contexts have created a sense of social detachment where spaces do not exist which encourage social interaction. Without this social activity, neighbors become almost a disposable commodity as relationships never fully develop. This thesis will be an examination of environments which do and do not foster community relationships and an implementation of community into an urban multi-family residence.
A major part of the problem is the recent move to the suburbs, but urban buildings also exhibit a lack of spaces which help encourage a …

Psychometrics Of Osce Standardized Patient Measurements, Frederick R. B Stilson
Psychometrics Of Osce Standardized Patient Measurements, Frederick R. B Stilson
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This study examined the reliability and validity of scores taken from a series of four task simulations used to evaluate medical students. The four role-play exercises represented two different cases or scripts, yielding two pairs of exercises that are considered alternate forms. The design allowed examining what is essentially the ceiling for reliability and validity of ratings taken in such role plays. A multitrait-multimethod (MTMM) matrix was computed with exercises as methods and competencies (history taking, clinical skills, and communication) as traits. The results within alternate forms (within cases) were then used as a baseline to evaluate the reliability and …

Evaluation Of Contraflow Lanes For Hurricane Evacuation, Jason Collins
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation evaluates contraflow during a hurricane evacuation for grade separated highways. Contraflow is the concept of reversing the typical direction of highway travel to provide more outbound roadway capacity. The State of Florida has spent more time and resources towards the planning and the designing of potential contraflow facilities than any other state in the country; however, contraflow has yet to be implemented (as of Summer 2008). This study determines if the additional capacity benefits of contraflow outweigh the logistical requirements of implementing contraflow. Five different alternatives of contraflow lane configurations were comparatively evaluated. The format of this study …
Analysis Of The Role Of Bhlh/Pas Proteins In Aryl Hydrocarbon Receptor Signaling, Edward J. Dougherty
Analysis Of The Role Of Bhlh/Pas Proteins In Aryl Hydrocarbon Receptor Signaling, Edward J. Dougherty
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AHR) is a basic helix-loop-helix PER/ARNT/SIM (bHLH-PAS) transcription factor that binds ligands typified by 2,3,7,8-tetracholordibenzo-p-dioxin, translocates to the nucleus, dimerizes with the aryl hydrocarbon nuclear translocator (ARNT) and associates with specific cis xenobiotic response elements to activate transcription of genes involved with xenobiotic metabolism. AHR-mediated signal transduction has been evaluated thoroughly in the C57BL/6J mouse model system. This model system, however, may not be the most accurate model for human comparisons as the AHRb-1 allele carried by C57BL/6J contains a point mutation that prematurely truncates the receptor at 805 amino acids, while the AHRb-2 …

The Development And Validation Of The Comprehensive Team Interdependence Scale, Michael E. Rossi
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to review the existing teams research which suggests that teams vary along 4 dimensions of interdependence. Task interdependence is the extent to which the task drives interactions among individuals. Resource interdependence is the extent to which individuals rely on others to provide inputs necessary to complete their portion of work. Reward interdependence is the extent to which individuals' rewards are tied into the performance of others. Finally, goal interdependence is the extent to which individuals set goals and receive feedback at the group versus individual level. A comprehensive team interdependence scale tapping into these …

Limts Of Beach And Dune Erosion In Response To Wave Runup From Large-Scale Laboratroy Data, Tiffany M. Roberts
Limts Of Beach And Dune Erosion In Response To Wave Runup From Large-Scale Laboratroy Data, Tiffany M. Roberts
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The SUPERTANK dataset is analyzed to examine the upper limit of beach change in response to elevated water level induced by wave runup. Thirty SUPERTANK runs are investigated, including both erosional and accretionary wave conditions under random and monochromatic waves. Two experiments, one under a spilling and one under a plunging breaker-type, from the Large-Scale Sediment Transport Facility (LSTF) are also analyzed. The upper limit of beach change approximately equals the maximum vertical excursion of swash runup. Exceptions to this direct relationship are those with beach or dune scarps when gravity-driven changes, i.e., avalanching, become significant. The vertical extent of …
Teaching Functional Skills To Individuals With Developmental Disabilities Using Video Prompting, Julie A. Horn
Teaching Functional Skills To Individuals With Developmental Disabilities Using Video Prompting, Julie A. Horn
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Because many individuals with developmental disabilities prefer to be as independent as possible, strategies need to be developed to teach them functional skills. Video prompting is a fairly new technology, in which a person learns to engage in a complex behavior by viewing steps of a task analysis on video. The steps are broken down so that the task is more manageable for the individual. The present study evaluated how many steps needed to be presented in the video model for the learner to acquire a functional skill. Three individuals between the ages of 17 and 29 and diagnosed with …

Examining Emotional Reactivity To Daily Events In Major And Minor Depression, Lauren M. Bylsma
Examining Emotional Reactivity To Daily Events In Major And Minor Depression, Lauren M. Bylsma
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a debilitating disorder characterized by significant mood disturbance. In laboratory studies, MDD has been characterized by both blunted positive (PER) and negative emotional reactivity (NER). However, mood disordered persons' emotional reactivity has rarely been studied in naturalistic settings, and it is unknown how less severe forms of depression relate to emotional reactivity. To address these issues, the current study utilized two naturalistic sampling methods (the Day Reconstruction Method and the Experience Sampling Method) to examine PER and NER to daily life events in 35 individuals currently experiencing a major depressive episode (MDD), 26 individuals currently …

Thin films are used for a variety of applications, which can include electronic devices, optical coatings and decorative parts. They are used for their physical, electrical, magnetic, optical and mechanical properties, and many times these properties are required simultaneously. Obtaining these desired properties starts with the deposition process and they are verified by a number of analysis techniques after deposition. A DC magnetron sputter system was used here to deposit tungsten films, with film thickness and residual stress uniformity being of primary interest. The film thickness was measured to vary by up to 45 % from the center to outer …
Study Of Fpga Implementation Of Entropy Norm Computation For Ip Data Streams, Subramanya Nagalakshmi
Study Of Fpga Implementation Of Entropy Norm Computation For Ip Data Streams, Subramanya Nagalakshmi
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Recent literature has reported the use of entropy measurements for anomaly detection purposes in IP data streams. Space efficient randomized algorithms for estimating entropy of data streams are available in the literature. However no hardware implementation of these algorithms is available. The main challenge to software implementation for IP data streams has been in storing large volumes of data, along with, the requirement of high speed at which they have to be analyzed. In this thesis, a recent randomized algorithm available in the literature is analyzed for hardware implementation. Software/hardware simulations indicate it is possible to implement a large portion …
A Monte Carlo Approach For Exploring The Generalizability Of Performance Standards, James Thomas Coraggio
A Monte Carlo Approach For Exploring The Generalizability Of Performance Standards, James Thomas Coraggio
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
While each phase of the test development process is crucial to the validity of the examination, one phase tends to stand out among the others: the standard setting process. The standard setting process is a time-consuming and expensive endeavor. While it has received the most attention in the literature among any of the technical issues related to criterion-referenced measurement, little research attention has been given to generalizing the resulting performance standards. This procedure has the potential to improve the standard setting process by limiting the number of items rated and the number of individual rater decisions. The ability to generalize …

A sixth condition attenuated the level of the 3,000 ms, 95 dB, 0.2-24 kHz signal in 3 dB increments until accuracy reached 75%. Subjects performed above …
Black Beauty As Antebellum Slave Narrative, Bonnie L. Blossom
Black Beauty As Antebellum Slave Narrative, Bonnie L. Blossom
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Published in November 1877, Black Beauty is one of the most popular and enduring works of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The book, in which the eponymous narrator relates his life's story, sold well following its publication in England and in the United States; by 1985, sales were estimated at over forty million. While usually regarded as entertaining, Black Beauty has a strong crusading purpose: Anna Sewell herself said she wrote to improve the treatment of horses.
This study springs from an intuitive notion. While reading the 1845 Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, I could not shake …
Effects Of Bilingualism On Speech Recognition Performance In Noise, Mitzarie A. Carlo
Effects Of Bilingualism On Speech Recognition Performance In Noise, Mitzarie A. Carlo
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This study examined the effects of bilingualism on speech recognition in noise performance of young normal-hearing Spanish-English bilinguals across several signal-to-noise ratios (SNR). The estimated signal-to-noise ratio needed for 50% correct recognition performance obtained for bilingual listeners was compared to young normal-hearing monolingual listeners of both English and Spanish. The estimated mean SNR needed for 50% correct recognition was significantly higher (i.e., poorer) for the bilingual than for the monolingual English listeners. The Spanish language performance of the bilingual listeners did not significantly differ from that of the monolingual Spanish listeners. The bilinguals were then divided into subgroups based on …
