Coming into existence a few years after the birth of the colony, it remained almost unchanged in its general character up until the time of the Civil War. After that date, colonial society became clearly stratified, and by the turn of the century had received its set firmly in the mold of aristocracy. The last battle of the War Between the States occurred in a vicinity particularly well adapted for the military tragedy that it was. The meandering Appomattox river found its way between hills the were high and close to the stream, making the approaches to it very difficult.
