Over the last century, the teaching of ethics in primary schools has changed greatly. The greatest influence upon public schools has been the shift in parents' attitudes towards teaching ethics in the school setting. Parents have progressively wanted to have more control over their child's ethical learning, thus becoming more critical of the teaching of ethics within public schools. This has led to greater input from parents. Christian ethics had long been the yardstick for ethical teachings, although in 1962 in the Engel v. Vitale case, school prayer was ruled unconstitutional, removing Christian views from the school setting. As a …

The Botetourt Dragoons In War And Peace, Michael G. Henkle

This thesis studies a Confederate cavalry company from the immediate prewar years through the war, ending with the death of one of its last members. Most soldiers were residents of Botetourt County, Virginia. The study focuses upon both the men themselves and the battles in which they fought. Letters, diaries, and postwar accounts reveal their thoughts. After the war, many took an active role in both veterans' affairs and their community by joining veteran camps and participating in politics. Near the end, many received pensions or stayed in old soldiers' homes.

Within this paper, I intend to explain the significance of Elizabethan pirates as financial and defensive assets to Elizabethan England. Because the pirates existed as plunderers and thieves, outright state support of their ventures by Parliament and the Queen is difficult to determine. Evidence indicates, however, that Queen Elizabeth I developed relationships with specific pirates, chiefly Sir John Hawkins and Sir Francis Drake. Elizabeth entrusted Hawkins and Drake to employ cold war tactics against Spain and secure England's financial stability with stolen goods. Through state documents, primary accounts, biographies, and secondary sources, I aim to explain certain aspects of the …

This study examines a large Indian encampment that was made part of an exposition held in Omaha, Nebraska in 1898. Relying almost exclusively on primary sources such as the two major newspapers in Omaha at the time, the World-Herald and the Bee, I attempt to uncover the diverse images cast by Indian delegates during their three month stay at the fair.· As well, I investigate reasons why Omaha seemed the perfect site to hold the Indian Congress and what incentives the natives had for attending. My research aims to understand how and why fundamentalists justify violence against people who do not fit their profile of "righteous" or "saved" persons, such as abortion doctors and clinic workers, gays and lesbians, and Jews. The first section of this paper travels through the history of fundamentalism since its origins in the British and American apocalipticism, or belief in the Second Coming of Jesus Christ. When examining the image of the Jew in American Holocaust films, one is truly determining how American Jews view themselves. These films' presentation of Jews exposes not only how Jewish Americans wished to see themselves but also how much Gentile Americans wanted to see of Jewish culture. An exploration of America's Holocaust films from the late 1930s to the early 1990s reveals an increasing concentration of Jews as the main victims of the event. The purpose of this paper is to examine the development and passage of the Federal Aid Highway Act of 1956, the Interstate Highway Act. It begins by examining the background of federal aid highway legislation in the United States in the twentieth century, and the state of US roads in the mid 1950s. The paper then turns to focus on the development of governmental interest in an integrated, limited-access, national system of modem interstate highways. The introduction of the modern director at the end of th4e nineteenth century had a major impact on both the role of dramatists in the theatrical process and the way they use stage directions within playscripts. This change will be demonstrated by a study of the way English-speaking dramatists make their intentions known through the scripted stage directions, or didascaliae, in dramatic texts.

In their attempts to exemplify the healing brought about by Jesus Christ, the Roman Catholic Church, the Church of God (Cleveland, Tennessee) and the Church of Christ, Scientist, all demonstrate the potential of a healing ministry in modern times. Beginning with the healing done by Jesus in the Gospels, from "its inception, Christianity has included the notion of healing through divine intervention." The principle of divine healing has since become integrated with Christian belief on the traditional, doctrinal, communal, and personal levels.

This paper explores the confusing relations between Great Britain and Bulgaria in the years 1933-1941. These years serve as the focus because 1933 is when Adolf Hitler became Chancellor in Germany and in 1941 Bulgaria entered World War II on the side of the Axis Powers. The newly rising threat of Germany, in the years after reconstruction from the First World War, is the backdrop against which these relations are set. This examination of the relations between Great Britain and Bulgaria shows why Britain failed to entice Bulgaria to join the Allied Powers, and why Bulgaria joined the Axis Powers.

This study has shown that Nestor Ivanovich Makhno strove to implement an interpretation of anarchism that consciously catered itself to the peasantry's desires. The resulting governmental organization, military structure and arbitrary tendencies of his movement profoundly conflicted ideals of theoretically pure anarchy. These manifestations were, however, in full accord with the peasantry's conception of the valiant revolt leader, which was best exemplified by peasantry's collective memory of the rebel leaders Stenka Razin and Emelian Pugachev.

From the optimism and liberalism of Jewish intellectuals, the decline of traditional Jewish life, and the socio-economic conditions of Russian Jewry, to the roots of popular anti-Semitism, this section provides valuable insight into the condition of the Jewish people who were about to experience the destructive and shattering events of 1881. However, the development of humanism in the sixteenth-century coincided with the rise of Saint Ignatius of Loyola and the Jesuits. Therefore, it is not surprising to find that Ignatius shared many of the same goals as the humanists. Erasmus was the most famous humanists of the Renaissance. And the work, from building houses to holding hands to cleaning homes to answering tax questions, covered every possible talent and ability that volunteers had to offer.

In 1915 Virginia missionary Miss Margie Shumate arrived in Shiu Hing in the South China Mission of the Southern Baptist Convention. Until the Communists forced her to leave, Miss Shumate served the Chinese with complete devotion, surviving political problems, social upheavals, and difficulties that most would not even want to imagine. Although the transition to a new field was difficult, Miss Shumate served first in Hong Kong and then in Thailand before her 1958 retirement. Unable to imagine life without the Chinese and mission work, Miss Shumate died soon after her retirement. Hers is story of adaptation, acceptance, and determination. …

In September 1862, the Confederate Congress authorized hospitals to employ white women as chief matrons, assistant matrons, and ward matrons. This paper examines the lives and experiences of matrons who worked in Confederate hospitals in Virginia. It concludes that only ''exceptional" women with the stamina to endure physical and mental hardships were able to defy conventional ideas about their proper role and contribute to the care of Confederate sick and wounded as matrons.
