While we speak of archeology as pre-history, it is as much a part of the history of any region as that which is recorded contemporaneously in writing, even though it does not relate to our own ancestors. So two of the papers read at our annual meeting were on Florida archeology. Ripley P. Bullen, Assistant Florida State Archeologist recounted the highlights of what has been learned of the central west coast.

The action generally known as the Dade Massacre is an event which cannot be adequately understood if viewed by itself, since it was but one aspect of an explosion occurring in the winter of 1835-1836 which rocked the Territory of Florida. The explosion was the culmination of the mounting tension between the whites on the one hand, and red and black on the other, whose origins antedated the acquisition of Florida by the United States. This crisis must be viewed in the perspective of, and against the background formed by the forces from which it developed. It is attempted here …

Clement Claiborne Clay, 1816-1886, was a son of Governor Clement Comer Clay of Alabama. He was a lawyer by profession, and in 1851 was a county judge. Two years later he was elected to the U. S. Senate, where he served until the outbreak of the Civil War. He declined to be the first Confederate Secretary of War, but was a Confederate senator from 1861 until 1863. In 1864 he undertook a highly secret mission to Canada on behalf of the Confederacy, the results of which are still not completely known. He was accused of participating in the conspiracy to …

Fort Tonyn, a small British fort during the American Revolution, is believed by some to have been located on Amelia Island at the site now occupied by Fort Clinch. The probable reason for this tradition is the fact that it is so located on a map prepared by W. G. F. Wallace, Esq., and included by Burton Barrs in his East Florida in the American Revolution. No substantiating evidence for this location is given by Barrs and it may be stated categorically that Wallace’s map is incorrect in this respect.

In young America, the common method by which a gentleman cleansed his honor of insult was to resort to arms under the code duello. The great majority of prominent men in the early days of the republic resorted to this adjustment at one time or another. Whether the insult were justified or not made no difference to the offended individual. If he were victorious in combat, either the righteousness of his Cause was considered upheld or the greater need for discretion in questioning his integrity was emphasized.

Subsequent to the military operations about Pensacola in the first year of the Civil War, most of West Florida remained remote from the struggle. Its main contribution to the Confederacy was salt produced from numerous evaporating establishments along the coast, which were frequently demolished by raiding parties from vessels of the Federal blockading squadron. It was also an important source of agricultural produce. The scarcity of good agricultural lands and distance from markets had restricted plantation farming to limited areas of Jackson, Washington and Walton counties. Garcilaso de la Vega is the subject of a new biographical study, published both in Peru and Spain in recent years, the Lima edition having been issued in 1945 and the Spanish, which has just come to hand, is the product of the Instituto de Cultura Hispanica presses in Madrid (1948). It is an interesting and scholarly volume of some 300 pages by D. Aurelio Miro Quesada y Sosa, noted Peruvian author and dean of the faculty of letters of the University of San Marco in Lima, which is the oldest university in the western world.

Florida’s Civil War hero, Edward Alysworth Perry, was a transplanted Yankee, born March 15, 1831, on a farm near Richmond, Massachusetts. He was a descendant of old New England stock which had migrated to America in the 1630’s. Arthur Perry, the first of the family to arrive in New England, was a member of a militia artillery company in Boston about 1638. From Boston the descendants of Arthur Perry migrated into Connecticut and western Massachusetts. Most of the early Perrys were farmers although some were ministers and a few dabbled in local politics.

The siege and capture of the British forts at Pensacola in April and May of 1781 brought to a climax Spanish participation in the American Revolution. The project was begun by Bernardo de GaIvez, the young governor of Louisiana who had already conquered the British posts in the Mississippi Valley and at Mobile Bay. The British still held out at Pensacola, their principal establishment in the Gulf of Mexico. Galvez landed there on March 18, and his force was soon augmented by troops from Mobile and New Orleans. It was not until the French and Spanish troops from Havana arrived …

The journal of Lieutenant Robert C. Buchanan, adjutant of the Fourth Infantry, contains the chronicle of the operations of a unit in the campaign against the Seminole Indians from November 1837 to January 1838. Written during the pursuit of the Seminole Indians along the Kissimmee river and Lake Okeechobee, the journal reveals the conditions under which the soldiers lived and fought, his description of the country, and his views on the Seminoles and the war. There is also a description of the famous battle at Lake Okeechobee on December 25, 1837, for which action Buchanan received a citation.

This letter of Senator Yulee’s was published in the Tallahassee Floridian and Journal of June 9, 1860 and copied in the St. Augustine Examiner of June 23, 1860. The original draft in the handwriting of Yulee, with numerous corrections also in his hand, is among the Yulee Papers at the University of Florida.
