In the case of the rite of Holy Baptism the study of the question is complicated by the fact that the rite of confirmation and that of Baptism ordinarily came together, since this was the ordinary form of admission to membership in the Christion Church. Melito, bishop of Sardis, in a letter presented to Aurelius, called Christianity "the philosophy which began under Augustus." (Eusebius, IV, 26.) The narrative about the persecution in Gaul under Marcus Aurelius, in V, is among the most important in the Church History of the bishop of Caesarea, untainted by the flattery of his later references to Constantine. The slurs of Gibbon have been answered by many Christians, especially by Milman, Dean of St. Paul's. The chief aim of Gibbon was to belittle the motives and heroism of the martyrs, to call in question the accounts of witnesses like Lactantius and Eusebius, and to excuse or mitigate the action of those responsible for the persecutions. In the present paper my aim is to examine with care the procedure and methods of Eusebius.

Fornication constitutes the one and only cause for obtaining a divorce, for severing the marriage bond. However, before the Christian congregation may sanction a suit for divorce on the grounds of fornication, it must be manifest that the person accused has actually committed fornication. The question is raised in a letter which just comes to hand from Rev. H. J. S. Astrup of Zululand, South Africa, who calls himself "an unknown far-away man," but whose labors in the South Africa mission-field are not unknown to us. Rev. The attitude of the Lutheran Church, specifically of our branch of the Lutheran Church, toward the Bible, is one which finds little appreciation in the world to-day. Wherever we turn, we find opposition. The Church of Rome has added to its mutilated Bible the vagaries of tradition and the claims of an "infallible" Pope. Most Protestant denominations have set aside the inspiration of the Bible or so modified the meaning of inspiration as to make the word meaningless.
