Andrew, Lola, and their six children arrive at their summer job on the Great Salt Lake. Although Andrew tries to be reassuring, Lola is less than convinced his choice is a good one. Away from an LDS neighborhood, without means to attend church, and surrounded by non-members, Lola is not pleased with the situation. This short story focuses on Lola's feelings as she tries to reconcile her Mormon culture and religious practices with the realities of the family's summer job.

The director of "The Mantle of the Prophet," a poetry drama staged at Brigham Young University in July 1960, discusses the unique aspect of the play. The drama, focusing more on language than character with a simple set, invites the audience to make a personal connection with a critical event in Mormon history—the martyrdom of Joseph and Hyrum Smith.

Professor McMurrin responds to Truman G. Madsen's critique of his essay on Mormon metaphysics (found in BYU Studies 2:1 (1960):101-105). This is a continuation of the debate between Sterling M. McMurrin and Truman G. Madsen regarding Mormon theology. Here McMurrin defends his statements: that Mormonism contains both realistic and nominalistic tendencies on priesthood, that Mormon value philosophy exhibits platonic character, that Mormonism is tritheistic, and that foreknowledge and free will are not contradictory.
