The Ethics Of Nostalgia In Arundhati Roy's The God Of Small Things, Hope Jennings Jan 2010

The Ethics Of Nostalgia In Arundhati Roy's The God Of Small Things, Hope Jennings

English Language and Literatures Faculty Publications

We can read Roy's novel as an articulation of the necessity of questioning the nation's representation of authority, bringing to light that which exists on its borders and margins, and ultimately demonstrating how this "plurivocality" disrupts the unity or hegemony of national discourse in order to reveal how a nation is perhaps located in its counter-narratives, its own irreducible differences (Bhabha, 301). More specifically, according to the terms of Benedict Anderson's ubiquitously cited phrase, Roy is engaged in examining how India, like any nation, exists as an "imagined community"; or rather, The God of Small Things explores how we imagine …

Social Context For Religious Violence In The French Massacres Of 1572, Shannon L. Speight Jan 2010

Social Context For Religious Violence In The French Massacres Of 1572, Shannon L. Speight

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

The project looks at violence as a social norm during the French massacres of 1572, causing widespread violence at a popular level, at the heart of which was religious group identity. The work examines outbreaks of fighting between Catholics and Huguenots starting in Paris with the St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre and spreading to provincial cities in the following months. Rather than viewing hostility as instigated from the top levels of society, this works aims to verify that there existed within France an acceptance of aggression that, encouraged by inflammatory religious rhetoric, resulted in the popular violence of the massacres. The …

Baccalaureate And Associate Degree Relationships Panel, Stephen Black, Charles Grieb, Sally A. Struthers, Sally Paronson

Art and Art History Faculty Publications

A significant number of reasoned and documented projections indicate that two-year associate degree-granting institutions will play an increasing role in the preparation of students who continue and obtain baccalaureate degrees. The U.S. population is growing, but few new institutions are being built. Many individuals must obtain their collegiate education close to home. Economic pressures and credit-hour caps are focusing states and localities on articulation agreements and curricular continuity. This session will explore these issues as a basis for presenting and considering what administrators should know and think about as local decision-making occurs.

Art As A Venue For Political Commentary: The Modern Mexican Printmaker And Social Consciousness, Gabriela Pickett

Master of Humanities Capstone Projects

This master’s project addresses the relationship between the Mexican roots of the author and her personal artistic expression. Growing up in México, the author was greatly influenced by the artistic talent of her father, as well as the work of many iconic Mexican artists. From a very early age she recognized how the political climate surrounding the Mexican Revolution and the visual arts complimented each other. The murals of Diego Rivera (1886-1959) are evidence of the fusion of art and a visual depiction of the history of México. This exposure helped her appreciate the process of defining cultural identity through …

English Language and Literatures Faculty Publications

The author reports on and analyzes the inclusion of parody in her sequence of assignments for a graduate composition theory seminar.
