Book Review: Our White Boy, Scott D. Peterson Jan 2011

Book Review: Our White Boy, Scott D. Peterson

Communication Faculty Publications

Equal parts history and memoir, Our White Boy works on a number of levels while developing a wide range of themes. Operating as baseball history, the book chronicles two seasons of the Wichita Falls/Graham Stars, a black semi-pro baseball team. As a memoir, Jerry Craft tells his unique story as the only white man to play in the West Texas Colored League. On still another level, Craft and Sullivan follow the time-honored narrative strategy of illustrating how baseball can aid in the development and maturity process of a young man.

How Faculty Attitudes And Expectations Toward Student Nationality Affect Writing Assessment, Peggy Lindsey, Deborah J. Crusan Jan 2011

How Faculty Attitudes And Expectations Toward Student Nationality Affect Writing Assessment, Peggy Lindsey, Deborah J. Crusan

English Language and Literatures Faculty Publications

Earlier research on assessment suggests that even when Native English Speaker (NSE) and Non-Native English Speaker (NNES) writers make similar errors, faculty tend to assess the NNES writers more harshly. Studies indicate that evaluators may be particularly severe when grading NNES writers holistically. In an effort to provide more recent data on how faculty perceive student writers based on their nationalities, researchers at two medium-sized Midwestern universities surveyed and conducted interviews with faculty to determine if such discrepancies continue to exist between assessments of international and American writers, to identify what preconceptions faculty may have regarding international writers, and to …

Modern Arab Discourse And Democracy: An Epistemological Critique, Ali Saeed Abd Jan 2011

Modern Arab Discourse And Democracy: An Epistemological Critique, Ali Saeed Abd

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Nearly two centuries have elapsed since the early 19th century modern Arab nahda. In contemporary Arab-Muslim accounts, there can be no downplaying the fact that after nearly two centuries, the Arab nahda has faltered at achieving its desired objectives. If so, what explains its faltering? Numerous well-read explanations on this bulk in Arab and Western literature; however, I argue that the most important factor behind the faltering of Arab nahda to date is the faulty form of Arab rationality dominating nahda discourse since its inception: ahistoricity. The entirety of Arab discourse treats the past as ahistorical and sacral to be …

The Air Close To The Trees: Evolution And Innovation In U.S. Army Assault Helicopter Units During The Vietnam War, Adam Thomas Givens

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Throughout the Vietnam War the United States Army's use of assault helicopters was unprecedented in modern warfare. Although planners originally anticipated their utilization on a European battlefield rather than against an insurgency, Army Aviation adapted, allowing them to overcome an uncertain future. Due to the unconventional nature of the conflict, continual revisions in tactics, techniques, and procedures ensured that assault helicopter doctrine was never concrete, but always shifting. Multiple factors influenced these developments, and manifold channels of dissemination allowed combat knowledge ultimately to influence training and doctrine. This thesis finds that previous works focus too heavily upon the initial large-scale …

This study aims at analyzing the general situation of American orphan asylums in the period from 1894 to 1944 by looking at the Ohio Pythian Home, which operated in Springfield, Ohio at this time. Through the use of primary and secondary sources, as well as interviews with former orphan residents of the Ohio Pythian Home, the study demonstrates that contrary to popular belief the orphan asylums of the period were nurturing institutions concerned with the well-being of their wards.

Museums And Restitution: The Actions And Effects Of Dr. Zahi Hawass, Bonnie Jean Roche

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

The topic of restitution, returning cultural objects to a museum in a country of origin, has produced a complicated debate. The factors concerning restitution are political, ethical, and emotionally charged. Leading this controversy is Dr. Zahi Hawass. He is concerned with both the return of artifacts and the protection of artifacts in Egypt. Hawass has developed a 'wish list' for the return of Egyptian artifacts from market nations. The museums currently housing the items feel they serve the purpose of allowing a global audience to view these artifacts. Hawass has made tremendous strides in retrieving other antiquities and making discoveries …

"A Repeating World": Redeeming The Past And Future In The Utopian Dystopia Of Jeanette Winterson's The Stone Gods, Hope Jennings

English Language and Literatures Faculty Publications

The article examines how Jeanette Winterson's book The Stone Gods follows a spatio-temporal alternative to the pattern of dystopian apocalypse and the utopian breach from history. It notes that such alternative showed Winterson's objective to tear down repressive ideologies through articulated narratives that no longer enact similar self-destructive cycles. It also points that the book is a pertinent illustration of a feminist critical dystopia.

The Comic Apocalypse Of The Year Of The Flood, Hope Jennings

English Language and Literatures Faculty Publications

If one of the primary tensions in Margaret Atwood's work is between survival (for the individual or humanity as a whole) and "the question of whether survival is even merited," exemplified by the author's recurring interest in exploring the end of the world (Wilson 177), then Atwood has become one of contemporary literature's. most rigorous demythologizers of Apocalypse, while at the same .contributing to its tradition of prophetic warning.
