Clearly, the Ohio Bicentennial is an important event for celebration. This article seeks to promote the Ohio Bicentennial by reviewing a project devoted to the local or public aspect of history. The focus of the project was the study of the history of Dayton, Ohio. Wright State University developed the Nearby History Institute, which brought public historians, social studies professors and researchers from area archives and museums together with faculty from the public schools, to rethink and strengthen American history teaching in the Miami Valley. The Ohio Humanities Council and the Martha Holden Jennings Foundation funded the institute.

This is the third in a series of interviews with Mr. Douglas R. Durko, Associate Dean for Hospital Affairs in the Wright State University School of Medicine. In the first part of this interview, Mr. Durko analyzes the impact of the Office of Hospital Affairs on the School of Medicine's residency programs. Some of the major aspects covered in this discussion include: funding for graduate medical education; the accreditation of the residency programs; contractual relationships between the School of Medicine and the area hospitals where the residencies are located; and the Residency Policy Committee.

This is the first in a series of interviews with Mr. Douglas R. Durko, Associate Dean for Hospital Affairs in the Wright State University School of Medicine. In the first part of this interview, Mr. Durko discusses his background prior to coming to Wright State University and his first work for the Wright State University School of Medicine as Assistant Director of the Greater Miami Valley Subregional Organization for Health Manpower, Education and Training (SOHMET). On September 13, 1978 Stephen Kahn interviewed Werner Becker about his life in before, during, and after World War II. In the beginning of this interview Werner discusses his early childhood and his family in Mecklenburg province in Germany. As the interview progresses Werner recounts how he intended to attend college in France but declined to enroll because he foresaw Jewish students being excluded from attending and completing college. Towards the end of the interview he recounts his time working in Algeria, later working for the British Army, and his eventual arrival in Dayton.
