This study deals with the quality of book reviewing by the New York Times Book Review and the New York Review of Books. Thirty-three pairs of reviews of books reviewed in 1974 by both reviewing journals comprised the population of the study. Three areas were examined by means of a weighted checklist: author information, content, information and style information. Length of reviews, qualifications of reviewers, focus on issues in reviews and advocacy of position on issues in reviews were also examined.

The purpose of the study was to compile a list of books for French teachers for their personal professional collections recommended by good French teachers. The survey instrument, which included an initial list of seventeen recommended books, was sent to French teachers in Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Illinois whose students scored first through fifth in the 1975 National French Contest. The researcher assumed that this population, could include some good French teachers.

The purpose of this study was to develop criteria that could be used by classroom teachers and media specialists to judge the quality of junior premarital pregnancy novels. A secondary purpose was to demonstrate by means of model critiques how the criteria could be applied. The professional literature reflected five categories of conern relating to junior premarital pregnancy novels: adolescent sexuality, didacticism, sexism, pat solutions, and stereotyped adults. The researcher selected a panel of six experts to comment on the categories of concern and to identify the ten most widely read titles in the genre. The panel included practicing media …

This study was an attempt to apply the principles and methods of one type of criticism, archetypal, to certain science fiction/fantasy writings. The study used these methods to answer the question: How do archetypes function in the Earthsea Trilogy by Ursula Kroeber Le Guin? The trilogy comprised A Wizard of Earthsea, The Tombs of Atuan, and The Farthest Shore.

This study was undertaken for the purpose of analyzing children's picture books to determine if specific moral conflict episodes could be identified, according to Lawrence Kohlberg's cognitive theory of moral development. The identification of conflict dilemmas was made by examining selected books for young readers to identify and isolate problems encountered by one or more characters. If conflict story incidents could be identified and described, it seemed probable that teachers could use them as a primary source for stimulating discussions about moral problem solving behaviors. Since the 1950's several psychologists have studied the subject of human selective attention [1, 2]. It has been called the 'cocktail party problem' because a good example of the exercise of selective attention occurs when a large convivial group of people come together and it is still possible for an individual to isolate from the high noise level of conversation what a particular speaker says. Thus, the psychological question is: How do humans select what they consider significant information from the vast amount of information provided to the senses by the external environment? As indicated in the title, the principal topic of this thesis is the concept of grammatical ambiguity. In this thesis, that concept and the concept of function switching rules are identified and defined. Examples of noun phrases from Japanese and English which exhibit grammatical ambiguity are analyzed. Examples of noun phrases in English which necessitate the formulation of function switching rules are provided and discussed. The study is conducted within a generative-transformational analytical framework. Non-generative studies germane to the topic are discussed. The bulk of the example sentences for Japanese come from non-generative sources.

The museum at the University of Northern Iowa has been an important adjunct of the institution since the last decade of the nineteenth century. The first 65 or so years of its existence are reviewed by the late Mr. Fred Cram, then archivist at the Iowa State Teachers College, in a 15-page paper, “The Museum at the Iowa State Normal School,” prepared in 1955 at the request of Dr. Emmett J. Cable, curator of the museum. The information on this era, summarized below, is gleaned from this paper unless otherwise noted.
