The purpose of this research project was to develop two units of instruction for use with Spanish classes in grades four through seven. The research begins by exploring the different types of elementary and middle level foreign language programs. The research also investigates the different types of thematic units and what they should include. Finally, two units are developed for use in grades four through seven: a project-based unit built around Eric Carle's book, La Oruga Muy Hambrienta (The Very Hungry Caterpillar), and a knowledge-based unit built around classroom vocabulary. With the advent of research on multiple intelligences and individual differences, alternative methods of assessing individual strengths in content areas are needed. An integral part of the process of acquiring a second language involves these alternative methods of evaluating individual strengths. Portfolio assessment offers an alternative to conventional testing strategies for evaluating progress in second language learning. Portfolios provide meaningful methods to actively engage language students in the basic four modalities of literacy: listening, reading, speaking and writing a second language. Discussions of literature may be viewed as a part of the social environment in which students can work together collaboratively to construct meaning. Book talk, or discussion, in a thematic unit encourages students to focus attention on the important ideas in their literature experiences, thus moving them beyond literal comprehension to inferential thinking.

Terri Smith Armfield presented a graduate oboe recital at 8:00 p.m. on November 15, 1999 in Russell Hall Auditorium at the University of Northern Iowa School of Music. The recital was presented in partial fulfillment of the requirements for a Master of Music degree in oboe performance. The recital repertoire represented a variety of challenging pieces from Italian Baroque to twentieth century: Antonio Vivaldi's Sonata No. 6, Opus 13, Bohuslav Martinu's Concerto for Oboe, Gaetano Donizetti's Concertina for English Horn and Ludwig van Beethoven's Trio Opus 87.

The purpose of this study was to examine how Native American women were portrayed in contemporary fiction written for young children. The study was limited to books published between 1989 and 1999. Content analysis was used to obtain data for this study. Twenty-three Native American female characters from twenty books were included in the population sample. The study was to determine if a majority of books would portray Native American women accurately based on current demographic data. The genre of poetry can.foster children's personal-social and thinking-language abilities. Poetry offers much pleasure for children, insight into their lives' and those of others, and models for their expression.

When teachers understand children's poetry preferences and ways to present this genre, it can add another dimension across the curriculum. Poetry experiences reported m this article were presented incidentally and in the social studies program of a fourth-grade classroom. Webbing conducted to identify important concepts in a social studies unit supported the fourth-graders poetry writing. Poetry forms were taught for children to use as structures for their writing.

Most African-American playwrights use realistic dialogue and monologues in their plays to share messages and stories about African-American culture, history, and society with others. One of the most popular and successful African-American playwrights today is August Wilson. His plays are a plethora of storytelling, and makes use of strong dialogue. Wilson displays elements of African-American culture and history in each of his plays, mostly through interaction and conversations between the characters. Wilson's plays are part of a larger project known as the twentieth-century cycle, in which each play represents a decade of African-American history and culture.

A Structure-Model For The Hamlet-Tradition, Christopher Scott Chiron

The "hero-as-fool" structure-model for the Hamlet-story proposed by William F. Hansen is modified into an "Amlethan" structure-model with five major elements: ( 1) the Usurpation; (2) the First Test (of the Maiden); (3) the Second Test (of the Mother); (4) the Third Test (of the Journey); and (5) the Revenge. The first and last elements emphasize the "avenging son" aspect of the story whereas the middle three elements emphasize the "hero-as-fool" aspect. The Amlethan structure-model is then re-applied to the two "essential" texts in the tradition, Saxo Grammaticus' narrative of Amleth (c. 1200) and William Shakespeare's play Hamlet (c. 1600). …

Of the ethical issues addressed in the professional literature regarding group counselor training, those most frequently addressed are confidentiality and dual relationships, and informed consent and involuntary participation. The purpose of this paper is to explore how these ethical guidelines apply to the personal growth/training groups utilized in counseling master's and doctoral programs and the ethical dilemmas that arise because of them. This paper will also explore suggestions that have been made to address these ethical dilemmas.

Bibliotherapy is defined as "the use of literature and poetry in the treatment of people with emotional problems or mental illness" (Pardeck, 1994, p.421). The purpose of this paper is to explore bibliotherapy and to identify the advantages of using it with children and adolescents. Readers will gain an understanding of the stages of bibliotherapy, the goals of bibliotherapy, how to implement bibliotherapy into a counseling program, and the benefits and limitations of bibliotherapy. In addition, suggestions for working with specific client populations are given.
