Considering Men, The Evolving Discourse On Masculinities: Reflections On "Masculinities: Violences, Variations, And Visions", Robert Heasley
Considering Men, The Evolving Discourse On Masculinities: Reflections On "Masculinities: Violences, Variations, And Visions", Robert Heasley
UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity
It has been twenty-five or so years since scholars first took up the mantle of critically examining masculinities in what are now considered classic works by Jack Sawyer, Joe Pleck and Harry Brod. These scholars made persuasive arguments for considering men in the equation of understanding gender. Drawing on a feminist analysis they called into question the perception that biology explains all and that the oppression of women was a de-facto result of how men and women are made, either by God or by nature. Today there is little support for the early essentialist arguments. Men, it turns out, do …

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, And Transgender Adolescent Populations : Implications And Implementation Of Lgbt Guidance Programs, Adam L. Karsten
Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, And Transgender Adolescent Populations : Implications And Implementation Of Lgbt Guidance Programs, Adam L. Karsten
Graduate Research Papers
Adolescence is a trying time for all youth, especially lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) adolescents. Although they experience the same physical and emotional changes as others their age, as sexual minorities, LGBT students deal with many additional situations and conflicts brought on by societal systems, specifically in school settings.
School counselors play a unique role in the development of LGBT adolescents. Counselors must maintain open lines of communication with all students, specifically LGBT populations, for their own safety and concerns. LGBT students need proper resources and support to increase self-growth and self-identity. LGBT guidance programs provide an environment that promotes …
Objectional Language In Young Adult Literature: A Mixed Method Analysis Of Twenty-Five Novels, Ann P. Larkin Kurt
Objectional Language In Young Adult Literature: A Mixed Method Analysis Of Twenty-Five Novels, Ann P. Larkin Kurt
Graduate Research Papers
This research examined 25 award-winning novels on the American Library Association's Best Books for Young Adults lists from 1995-2005 to identify through content analysis the frequency of use of objectionable language. A further textual analysis was then done to look for contextual patterns in the use of objectionable language in dialogue.
The researcher kept record of each instance of such language used in each novel. These instances were then analyzed by novel, by word, by most often used in each novel, and by most often used overall. Next, information was gathered to see if the objectionable language appeared in dialogue. …

The Global Gag Rule: Implications For Feminism, Ngo Funding, And Women’S Global Health, Amanda L. Breeden
The Global Gag Rule: Implications For Feminism, Ngo Funding, And Women’S Global Health, Amanda L. Breeden
Graduate Research Papers
This research project examines the effects of the Mexico City Policy on feminism, non governmental organizations (NGOs) funding, and women's global health. The paper argues that the Mexico City Policy, also known as the Global Gag Rule, is a form of hegemonic discursive and cultural imperialism that silences women and NGO voices. In doing so, the policy decreases access to reproductive health care, increases the feminization of poverty, and removes reproductive decision-making from women.
The research maintains this argument through review of the literature surrounding this issue. This literature review includes an examination of the history of the U.S. policy …
