The Famished Class, Lindsay Ruter Jan 2008

The Famished Class, Lindsay Ruter

Student Writing Awards

The korl woman portrayed within Rebecca Davis’ work, Life in the Iron-Mills is an essential element to understanding the story and its social implications. Additionally, one’s understanding of the possible representations the sculpture has is vital to one’s understanding of the class struggles existing during this time. According to editor of Life in the Iron-Mills, Cecelia Tichi, “korl”, as referred to throughout the story is colloquial speech for “scorl” or “scoria” a product of smelted iron ore (18). The sculpture Hugh creates from this substance represents several different ideas and issues prominent during this time, as well as bringing to …

Duality In Dr. Jekyll And Mr. Hyde, The Picture Of Dorian Gray, And "Dionea", Lauren Mcdonald Jan 2008

Duality In Dr. Jekyll And Mr. Hyde, The Picture Of Dorian Gray, And "Dionea", Lauren Mcdonald

Student Writing Awards

Duality appears as a common theme in late-Victorian literature. Duality serves as a way for the modern reader to analyze late-Victorian literature and common late-Victorian culture as well. Through studies of pieces of literature such as Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, The Picture of Dorian Gray, and "Dionea" readers can see this common theme. Despite the prevalence of duality and the both/and perspective in late-Victorian literature the idea of duality itself was not traditionally accepted in late-Victorian culture. Victorians preferred to look at things in an either/or perspective. I will write about Robert Louis Stevenson’s Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, …

"It’s about Little Grandma; she’s gone." As I hung up the phone, Dad’s words were still trailing in my ears. I sat down on the couch, the house completely empty, and let the tears cascade, and with them the memories…

A Moment Of Truth, Pam Klein Jan 2008

A Moment Of Truth, Pam Klein

Student Writing Awards

In my daydream, I had a mug of hot cocoa in one hand, Henry David Thoreau’s Walden in my other hand, and a space heater at my feet. I had no reason to shiver, no reason to want to be elsewhere, no reason to wonder why Cody and I had spent the night with Cody’s parents, which made it nearly impossible to get out of deer hunting. In my daydream, I had no reason to wish Larry and Lori didn’t suspect I would accidently burn their house down if I’d stayed behind to cook them supper. In my daydream, I …

The Quilt Enchiladas, Mallorie De Hoyos Jan 2008

The Quilt Enchiladas, Mallorie De Hoyos

Student Writing Awards

They say smell is a powerful sense that can trigger memories long forgotten. When I smell onions, bell pepper, and smoked jalapeños I see my grandmother—a vivid image of a woman, who has worked all her life and has never had it easy. As a child I would play in my grandmother’s backyard with my other cousins making mud pies and stuffing up all the ant holes that poke out of the ground. My grandmothers’ kitchen window overlooked the backyard and the aromas from her cooking would tickle our noses and made our mouths water until we ran inside to …

Grandpa's Move, Emily Burney Jan 2008

Grandpa's Move, Emily Burney

Student Writing Awards

"Grandpa had a stroke." My dad’s voice echoed across a vast distance and my hand tightened around the phone. I heard my voice respond sympathetically, a reflex. It was like hearing something sad on the news, but what do you do? My parents are divorced, my dad lives thousands of miles away, and I barely know my grandpa.

Carpe Noctum, Mark Andrew Turnage Jan 2008

Carpe Noctum, Mark Andrew Turnage

Honors Program Theses

In movies, there are certain conventions that identify a film with a particular genre: a typical western has cowboys; a superhero movie may star a gifted protagonist; or an adventure film could feature exotic locations. Such is also the case with film noir, a movement characterized by storylines featuring criminal elements and their tensions with the police, stylized black-and-white cinematography, and a seedy, nightmarish cityscape. But just as an audience can easily identify genres like these, an author can also demythologize a genre by providing original themes within a familiar setting or inverting those themes that currently exist within the …

Female Hysteria Across Cultures And Periods In American Literature, Jessica Daine Droogsma Jan 2008

Female Hysteria Across Cultures And Periods In American Literature, Jessica Daine Droogsma

Honors Program Theses

Modernity would like us to believe we are in control: you can be whatever you want if you work hard enough; you are in charge of your own destiny; practice makes perfect; if you don’t like something, change it; you are what you eat. These popular aphorisms reflect our society’s addiction to self-determinism. We are completely set on the idea that we create and direct our own lives. However, there are larger influences in the world which are sometimes out of our control. The government, the media, society as a collective, and other such establishments have power over the individual. …

Variability In L1 And L2 French Wh- Interrogatives: The Roles Of Communicative Function, Wh- Word, And Metalinguistic Awareness, Elizabeth Zwanziger Jan 2008

Variability In L1 And L2 French Wh- Interrogatives: The Roles Of Communicative Function, Wh- Word, And Metalinguistic Awareness, Elizabeth Zwanziger

Faculty Publications

Research on variability in French interrogatives and the factors affecting word order in questions has many foci, but largely centers around socio-stylistic factors. In contrast, this dissertation explores two under-investigated constraints on French questions: communicative function and WH-element as well as the role metalinguistic awareness plays in the question structure produced. A corpus of 1200 questions each for L1 (n=30) and advanced L2 (n=30) groups was collected via a Discourse Elicitation Task crossing five communicative functions (echo, presupposition, topic-introduction, rhetorical, and self-addressed) and four WH-words (où, pourquoi, combien, and qui). Post DCT, the participants were interviewed regarding metalinguistic knowledge affecting …

The focus was to increase assessment scores of students who were exposed to current up-to-date photographs of their city. The hypothesis for this research was: If third grade students are taught using current up-to-date photographs of their city then they will be more likely to remember places and landmarks that they study.

The students were divided into two groups. Both groups received the same lessons on Bettendorf history in their classroom. One group then …

The Relationship Of Preservice Teachers' And Faculty Members' Perceptions Of Critical Thinking And Their Epistemological Beliefs, Meskerem Debele Jan 2008

The Relationship Of Preservice Teachers' And Faculty Members' Perceptions Of Critical Thinking And Their Epistemological Beliefs, Meskerem Debele

Graduate Research Papers

The term "critical thinking" has recently been used in the Ethiopian educational policy documents as well as in its teacher education curricula. Even though the concept has been given a central importance by being the central goal of education at all levels, a well established understanding and practice of nurturing critical thinking at school level, as well as at teacher education and training curriculum has not been achieved yet. From the personal experience both as pre-service teacher and then as teacher educator in Bahir Dar university, one of the teacher education institutions in the country, I have observed, especially during …

Religious Pluralism: The Evangelical Christian Response, Matthew F. Rittgers Jan 2008

Religious Pluralism: The Evangelical Christian Response, Matthew F. Rittgers

Honors Program Theses

The dawn of the twenty-first century has ushered in a new age in humankind. Information travels around the world at the speed of light thanks to the Internet, cell phones and communications satellites; industry and science have created advanced technologies and medicines, and transportation has continued to grant more and more humans the ability to leave their ancestral homeland and travel across the globe in a matter of hours. Due to these things, the world seems to be a smaller place. No longer do enormous mountains or vast oceans isolate nations and cultures from each other. Perhaps one of the …

John Thomas' Art Rediscovered: An Introduction, Harvey Hess Sep 2007

John Thomas' Art Rediscovered: An Introduction, Harvey Hess

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

Jerré Tanner's splendid (but by no means exhaustive) monograph, On the Origins and Applications of the Grid in the Art of John Paul Thomas presents the first internet presence, in the twenty-first century, of one of the most significant artists of the twentieth. That a chasm of close to two decades could gape between the most recent examples of Thomas studies, when the internet had not yet begun its astonishing career, seems no less astonishing than that a species of "dark ages" could descend upon the work and fame of an artist of "light," and-as Tanner reveals-a re-creation of pictorial …

Liberal Education For A Time Of Uncertainty: Reflections On Mark Van Doren's Liberal Education, Bill Koch Sep 2007

Liberal Education For A Time Of Uncertainty: Reflections On Mark Van Doren's Liberal Education, Bill Koch

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

For several months now I have been reading up on composition theory, and I’ve noticed that scholars like Anne Berthoff and Patricia Bizzell quote some of the seminal thinkers and philosophers of the early 20th century. These scholars (such as Cassirer, Richards, Whitehead) wrote their most influential texts during the 1930s, as if the awful gathering military storm had pressured these thinkers into formulating crystalline expressions of what the human mind must do to—as Richards puts it—“remedy our misunderstandings.”
