Personal correspondence, documents, notes, memorabilia, printed materials and photographs. Notable materials include numerous photographs chronicling twentieth century black history in Jacksonville and historical photographs of urban Jacksonville. Included in the collection are the photographs of R. Lee Thomas, a black photographer active in the early twentieth century in the southern United States. Thomas' work covers primarily southern black religious and labor groups, circa 1946-49.

The submitted videos are a representation of recent performances and world premieres of commissions by Dr. Andrea Venet’s percussion duo, Escape Ten. Escape Ten is an ensemble in residence at the UNF School of Music with Dr. Annie Stevens (Virginia Tech). The first video is of a new composition, 2300 Degrees, by Ivan Trevino. Trevino held a musical residence at the Corning Museum of Glass in Corning, NY and was greatly affected by observing glass blower Lino Tagliapietra work. The prospects of travel, trade, and religious pilgrimage in the Levant fascinated generations of Russia’s men and women from the twelfth to the early twentieth centuries. In particular, the storied sacred sites of Jerusalem attracted the curiosity of myriad Russian travelers: monks and priests, merchants and diplomats, writers and artists, scholars and tourists. Dmitrii V. Dashkov (1784-1839) etched his name in the annals of these visitors with a brief sojourn in Ottoman Palestine in 1820, and his travelogue, rendered here in English, merits attention as a document that offers eyewitness testimony, firsthand observation, and telling detail. I first presented these comments at the 44th Annual Convention of the Association for Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies (New Orleans, November 2012), as part of a roundtable discussion that honored Theofanis G. Stavrou’s fifty years of service to Mediterranean, Slavic, and Eastern Orthodox Studies. With a few alterations and updates, these words stand as an appropriate conclusion to this volume of essays exploring the main topical interests—Eastern Orthodox Church history, Modern Greek literature, Russian history and culture, the history of Cyprus, and several other areas—in the truly outstanding scholarly career of Theo Stavrou.

This study explores the relationship between fascism, fascist ideas, and environmental consciousness in Britain during the pre- and post-World War II decades. In examining this topic, two main questions arise. First, why did fascist intellectuals support environmentally conscious ideas, and how did they relate these positions to their political ideologies? Second, why were many environmentally conscious thinkers during this period attracted to fascism? This thesis will also address several related issues regarding fascism and environmental consciousness. These issues include what role environmental concerns played in the British Union of Fascist’s platforms and in fascism’s public appeal, and how that role …

This thesis examines some of the different kinds of metaphors employed in our pedagogical practices. By using the Four Pillars of Philosophy for Children, an alternative metaphor for teaching philosophy is put forth as a viable alternative to the traditional options. This is what we can reasonably call the Rhapsode Metaphor.

Project Description: This poster presentation will preview the results of an autoethnographic study examining vegan culture in Thailand. The RawTill4 Bike Fest was recently held in Chiang Mai, Thailand; the conference focused on promoting a vegan diet rich in fruits, vegetables and carbohydrates along with daily physical activity—primarily cycling. Two very popular public figures and vegan activists, Harley Johntsone and Leanne Ratcliffe are the keynotes of this conference experience. This unique environment provides hundreds of opportunities for members of the vegan community, cyclists, and/or social media content producers who have established names for themselves on platforms such as YouTube and …

Translating from English into American Sign Language holds a number of challenges, particularly when the English source text is a formal, high profile, scripted speech. This study examined perspectives of Deaf bilinguals on translating President Obama’s 2009 inaugural address into American Sign Language. We conducted a microanalysis of translations of the opening line – ‘my fellow citizens’ – to investigate the product and processes employed by Deaf translators. Five Deaf ASL-English bilinguals who are ASL teachers or interpreters/translators were asked to translate the opening paragraph of the address and were interviewed about the processes they used to render their …

Power And Privilege: An Exploration Of Decision-Making Of Interpreters, Debra Russell, Risa Shaw

This article presents the findings of a study conducted with Deaf and hearing American Sign Language (ASL) interpreters from Canada and the United States who interpret legal discourse and legal interactions. This qualitative research study was designed to explore constructs of power and power dynamics that emerge in interpreted interactions. Sixteen interpreters, with at least fifteen years of experience in legal interpreting participated in an on-line survey; nine also participated in focus groups. This study found intersections among power and privilege, interpreters' sense of agency, their conceptualization of the task of interpreting, and their training.
