Mr. Harewood is an art professor at Florida State College of Jacksonville. He was born in Brooklyn, New York, the son of immigrant parents from Barbados. His history covers drawing comics in his youth, formal art education at the University of North Carolina, an internship at Marvel Comics, and as an art professor and community art advocate in Jacksonville. Mr. Harewood also describes several of his mural projects, his art influences, and what the COVID-19 pandemic was like for him.

Jacksonville is nationally recognized as being a city that disproportionately places defendants on death row. The author, who has been both a prosecutor and an appellate attorney representing inmates on death row in Jacksonville, believes that the high number of death sentences being issued in this city, at the recommendation of juries, is driven by a strong retributive intuition held by a significant part of Jacksonville’s society. In order to shape the future of our profession, I believe it is necessary for us to also take a critical look at both past and present practices. With that goal in mind, this commentary presents a case study of the sign language interpreting services provided at the World Federation of the Deaf (WFD) Congresses held between 1983 and 2019.

The founding members of the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) felt strongly about recruiting, training, and confirming the competence of interpreters. As a result, for over 50 years RID has been the national leader for the profession of ASL-English interpreting. At the same time, the next generation of American Sign Language (ASL)-English interpreters continue to face challenges pertaining to pre-service education, practicum experiences, and professional support after graduation as they enter the field. This article describes these challenges and offers suggested recommendations toward proactive organizational investment in this next generation of interpreters that will improve the quality of …

Educational Interpreters And The Dunning-Kruger Effect, Stephen Fitzmaurice

Kruger and Dunning (1999) found the least skilled individuals significantly overestimate their performance. However, as individuals increase their awareness their skills their predictions also become more accurate – the Dunning-Kruger Effect. This study examined the ability of educational interpreters working in public schools to predict their scores on the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) a measure of interpreting skills. Findings indicate interpreters experience a Dunning-Kruger Effect in that the least skilled interpreters overestimate their interpreting skills, whereas better interpreters underestimate their interpreting skills. Editing the Eartha M.M. White Collection is a digital public history project at the University of North Florida (UNF). Started as a summer digital editing course in 2016, the project has since developed into an ongoing experiment in digital humanities outreach and community building through periodic textual editing workshops involving archival materials. Project participants transcribe and prepare for online publication (using TEI–XML) the personal correspondence and other documents of Eartha M.M. White (1876–1974), a leader of the African American community in Jacksonville, Florida.
