Documents on tsarist policy in the Near East offer suggestive detail, subtle nuance, and firsthand commentary on the proposed if not actual state of Russo-Ottoman affairs regarding specific issues between the two neighboring autocratic empires. These features, to varying degrees, are manifested in this translated directive of June 1816, from Foreign Minister Karl V. Nessel'rode to envoy Grigorii A. Stroganov in Istanbul, dealing with Russia's attitude toward the sultan's Eastern Orthodox subjects in the aftermath of the Congress of Vienna. The Foreign Ministry's instruction merits attention by scholars of lmperial Russia's involvement in the Eastern Question as a reminder that …

Holism, Hermeneutics, And Heterophenomenology: A Critique Of Daniel Dennett's Intentional Stance, George Fletcher

Heterophenomenology downplays the reality of the internal experiential aspects of consciousness in deference to an intentional, language-based model of consciousness that places emphasis on the neutral acceptance of the speech reports of subjects as the basis for understanding consciousness – thus placing the foundations of consciousness in a physical, monistic (physical sans soul), computational device (the brain). I shall argue that this methodology can be seen as a form of empathic extrapolation of self-understanding onto the other in dialogue, akin to the work of early hermeneutics. 11 This methodology is closely tied in with a contemporary connectionist conception of computability …

By examining the historical treatment of punishment and the results of those practices, we can more accurately diagnose the problems and prescribe the proper remedies. It is time that we focus on healing instead of simply treating the symptoms with catastrophic intervention. As with medicine, if a problem is detected and treated early the probability of recovery and a healthy life are much higher than beginning treatment after the body has become critically ill. I propose a holistic approach to the problem of crime and punishment and here, specifically, focus on the alternative to current correctional practices. The practice of …

The stage is no place for silence. The silence is no place for a stage. Like a white page upon which it is inscribed, presented as dramatic instruction—"(silence)"—the word is made into a mark, made into a bracketed moment, only to be instantly, noisily transformed into utterance. Mouths closed; the word erased but still seen, fully present and intended to form and function, to speak breathlessly. The speakers stop, pause, silent. This project has challenged me to the limits of my ability as a student, a percussionist, and a musician, but it has also improved and motivated me. The Rejection Of The Manege Tradition In Early Modern England: "Equestrian Elegance At Odds With English Sporting Tradition", Elizabeth Pope Simmons

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Renaissance creativity and obsession with classical traditions spawned a new form of horsemanship called the manege in sixteenth-century Europe. This study deals with England's rejection of the courtly horsemanship despite the dismal state of the nation's equestrian affairs. Tudor and Stuart monarchs utilized royal influence to attempt change - from legislative refmms to the horses - but no specific monarchical effort proved immediately effective. The significance of royal influence is seen in the continued importation of quality stock and in royal support for equestrian-related sports.
