Mabel Lee And Louise Pound: The University Of Nebraska's Battle Over Women's Intercollegiate Athletics, Kristi Lowenthal Jul 1999

Mabel Lee And Louise Pound: The University Of Nebraska's Battle Over Women's Intercollegiate Athletics, Kristi Lowenthal

Department of History: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Mirroring a cultural shift that brought the American middle class from the Victorian era into the modern era, women's intercollegiate sports encountered stiff resistance from the two overlapping social groups. Mabel Lee, a woman physical educator, brought firmly held Victorian beliefs about feminine propriety and moderation to the University of Nebraska when she was hired as the head of the women's physical education department in 1924. Louise Pound, an English professor at the University, had for years excelled in highly competitive athletics as a member of the new modern middle class. Pound flouted Victorian restraints and refused to enter the …

Reflections On The Aed 20th Anniversary, Jon Kukla Jun 1999

Reflections On The Aed 20th Anniversary, Jon Kukla

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

We were all younger then, and at thirty I guess I was younger and I certainly had done far less than most of the people gathered in a hotel room in St. Louis to establish the Association for Documentary Editing. I'm quite certain that I didn't say anything- for although I was strongly committed to documentary editing, the Southern Historical Association was meeting at the now-demolished hotel near Forest Park, and on the previous afternoon I had presented my first paper to a professional historical meeting. Linda Grant DePauw had commented, Merrill Peterson had chaired, and I was grateful not …

Editing In The New Millennium: Review Of A Guide To Documentary Editing, 2d Ed. Mary-Jo Kline., Esther Katz, Ann D. Gordon

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

Now, the second edition of the Guide to Documentary Editing has appeared, living up to the motto that Mary-Jo Kline adopted from Sir Walter Gregg for this and the earlier edition: ''My desire is rather to provoke discussion than to lay down the law." By clarifying and updating the basic theories and laws that govern the practice of editing, Kline has produced a revised Guide that will continue to be an important reference source for those involved in editing projects. Used along with Editing Historical Documents: A Handbook a/Practice, by Michael E. Stevens and Steven E. Burg (reviewed by Beth …

Evaluating The Institute For Editing Historical Documents, Beth Luey Jun 1999

Evaluating The Institute For Editing Historical Documents, Beth Luey

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

The Institute for Editing Historical Documents has been meeting every sununer since 1972. More than four hundred editors, archivists, teaching faculty, graduate students, and independent scholars have benefited from its teaching sessions, tutorials, and good fellowship. The institute has become an institution. Those who have spent a week or two in Madison (since 1978) or an earlier venue, whether as campers or as counselors, are nearly unanimous in agreeing that the experience was professionally valuable. But aside from the comments on each session written by the interns, there has been no systematic evaluation of the institute. This article attempts to …

At Risk In The Writing Classroom: Negotiating A Lesbian Teacher Identity, Irene G. Meaker May 1999

At Risk In The Writing Classroom: Negotiating A Lesbian Teacher Identity, Irene G. Meaker

Department of English: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

"Education is a fearful enterprise," says teacher and philosopher, Parker Palmer. Student-centered/ processoriented pedagogy asks teachers to step out from behind the relative safety of the teacher mask and to enter the risky arena of learning. For the writing teacher, a special challenge is to help students negotiate the risks inherent in the act of writing and in sharing writing with the "Other."

To prevent fears from dominating our students, teachers must model risk-taking and risk negotiation. In my own teaching, my fears around students' reactions to learning my sexual identity meant that I more often reinforced fears than dispelled …

Review Of Of Good And Ill Repute: Gender And Social Control In Medieval England By Barbara Hanawalt, Carole Levin Apr 1999

Review Of Of Good And Ill Repute: Gender And Social Control In Medieval England By Barbara Hanawalt, Carole Levin

Department of History: Faculty Publications

Barbara Hanawalt presents her audience with an engaging and thoughtful set of interlocking essays that will be of interest to scholars in a variety of disciplines and yet is also accessible to students. In her acknowledgments, Hanawalt expresses her appreciation to her colleagues in literature who have helped her to read medieval texts-whether literary or historical-with a more critical eye, and Hanawalt's subtle readings of a wide range of late medieval English texts beautifully demonstrates how well a historian can use what she has learned &om other disciplines. She demonstrates her awareness of voice and of the importance of the …

The Journals Of Lewis And Clark: Almost Home, Gary E. Moulton

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

My entry into the world of Lewis and Clark was quite indirect. My wife Faye saw an ad for the editorial position in a professional journal in 1978 and encouraged me to apply. That I was to be unemployed the next year was a compelling incentive. My professional interests in the American West, Native Americans, and historical editing gave me an edge. In fact, I was just completing editing the papers of Chief John Ross of the Cherokees, supported for four years by the National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC) of the National Archives.

Genotypes, Phenotypes, And Complex Human Behavior Including Scholarly Editing, Herman J. Saatkamp Jr. Mar 1999

Genotypes, Phenotypes, And Complex Human Behavior Including Scholarly Editing, Herman J. Saatkamp Jr.

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

For quite some time I have been puzzled by the role of genetics in explaining both human characteristics and behavior. This curiosity led to several odd occupations for a philosopher/ editor. With a biochemist, I team-teach an honors course in genetics, and recently I became a faculty member and administrator in a college of medicine as well as a professor of pediatrics in a hospital-clinic research institution. These are not positions usually open to editors or philosophers, and one might wonder how they came about.

Intellectually, George Santayana's naturalism is the springboard for my interest. Although he maintains that all …

A Consonance Of Civility And Good-Will: Review Of Cleanth Brooks And Robert Penn Warren: A Literary Correspondence, Ed. James A. Grimshaw, Jr., Keen Butterworth

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

The strength of Brooks's friendship pervades his letters published in Cleanth Brooks and Robert Penn Warren: A Literary Correspondence. Just as obvious is the strength of Warren's attachment to Brooks. Throughout these letters, extending from 1933 to 1988, mostly concerned with literary and professional matters, a tone of respectful deference obtains, but breaking through that tone quite often are glimpses of their heartfelt affection for one another. These glimpses usually come at the ends of letters, when the business matters have been concluded and one expresses his desire to see the other and his family, or is particularly warm in …

"In Der Bozner Zelle Erhängt …": Roderick Hall — Einziges Ein-Mann-Unternehmen Des Amerikanischen Kriegsgeheimdienstes In Südtirol, Gerald Steinacher

Department of History: Faculty Publications

Literacy Practices At The Genoa Industrial Indian School, Amy M. Goodburn Jan 1999

Literacy Practices At The Genoa Industrial Indian School, Amy M. Goodburn

Department of English: Faculty Publications

Despite an abundance of scholarship on federal Indian boarding schools, few studies have focused on literacy as a central term for investigation. Although literacy studies is necessarily interdisciplinary and contributes to insights about the relationship between language and, in Levinson and Holland's words, the "cultural production of the educated person," few Indian boarding-school histories have focused on the significance of particular literacy practices for understanding Indian students' school experiences. When literacy is discussed, it is usually in terms of the federal "English only" requirement that prohibited Indian languages or the drill and rote exercises used in the primary language curriculum. …

Racing (Erasing) White Privilege In Teacher/Research Writing About Race, Amy M. Goodburn Jan 1999

Racing (Erasing) White Privilege In Teacher/Research Writing About Race, Amy M. Goodburn

Department of English: Faculty Publications

In this essay, I examine several spheres of “race construction” and the ethical implications of these constructions for how I—as a white composition teacher/researcher—named, described, and interpreted student response in a dissertation chapter I wrote on a student discussion of Toni Morrison’s The Bluest Eye within a writing course focused on “difference.” This essay describes my own process of coming to understand the ways that my readings of classroom events were/are shaped by my position as a white teacher/researcher and the implications for understanding what naming these moments might mean for others engaged in composition research. In particular, I examine …

"Links Of Similitude": The Narrator Of The Country Of The Pointed Firs And Author-Reader Relations At The End Of The Nineteenth Century, Melissa J. Homestead Jan 1999

"Links Of Similitude": The Narrator Of The Country Of The Pointed Firs And Author-Reader Relations At The End Of The Nineteenth Century, Melissa J. Homestead

Department of English: Faculty Publications

The narrator of The Country of the Pointed Firs is an elusive figure. A narrator who is also a character in the fiction, she nevertheless reveals very little about herself as a character in the course of her narration. She is the unnamed speaking "I," and she is "you" to Mrs. Todd and other characters. Although the narrator apparently travels to Dunnet Landing from a city, we don't know where she lives the rest of the year; and we can only assume from her time spent in the schoolhouse engaged in "literary employments" that she writes for pay. But critics …
