Reading Space As Time In Great Plains Recollective Architecture, Paul A. Olson Oct 1999

Reading Space As Time In Great Plains Recollective Architecture, Paul A. Olson

Department of English: Faculty Publications

It is a long way from Black Elk's tipi to the Stuart building. Clearly most cultures and periods impose one or more narrative plots on time and space (I have written of four that were part of the recent past of this state). It may be that we will need soon to return again to a celebration of the cyclical in our architecture. If the ethos of domination that goes with linear, progressive notions of time is as destructive to our environment as the Club of Rome (and other successor study groups looking at the future of the planet) have …

A Black Range Christmas Tree, Thomas Lynch Oct 1999

A Black Range Christmas Tree, Thomas Lynch

Department of English: Faculty Publications

Driving north from Las Cruces on I-25, one departs the relative green of the sheltered town of tree-lined streets and enters stark desert. The view while skirting the southern edge of the Jornada del Muerto is hardly promising for an expedition, like ours, in search of a Christmas tree.

Review Of Otto Dov Kulka, Ed., Deutsches Judentum Unter Dem Nationalsozialismus.Band I: Dokumente Zur Geschichte Der Reichsvertretung Der Deutschen Juden 1933-1939, Alan E. Steinweis

Department of History: Faculty Publications

The edited volume of documents under review ... brings together materials reflecting a wide spectrum of Jewish communal activities in Germany from just before the advent of the Nazi regime to 1939. A second volume, covering the period 1939-1943, is in preparation. The chronological division of the volumes follows milestones in the organizational evolution of German Jews in the Nazi era. In 1932, in the face of intensifying antisemitism, an attempt was made to overcome factionalism within the German-Jewish community. The resulting umbrella association, which came to be known as the Reichsvertretung der deutschen Juden, encompassed the majority, but not …

Theodor Lebrun And Industrial Comedy Space In Nineteenth Century Berlin, William Grange Oct 1999

Theodor Lebrun And Industrial Comedy Space In Nineteenth Century Berlin, William Grange

Johnny Carson School of Theatre and Film: Faculty Publications and Creative Activity

The formation of the German Reich in 1871 was an occasion of unprecedented economic growth, accompanied by an equally conspicuous increase of both theatre construction and audience growth. One important aesthetic result, to paraphrase Hélène Cixous by way of Jacques Lacan, was "re-locating and un-making" the comic self in an alternative space of the Wilhelminian “Imaginary.” The victorious conclusion of the Franco-Prussian War in 1871 and the collection of billions in war reparations from the vanquished French allowed the German economy between 1871 and 1890 to surpass that of France and soon thereafter that of Great Britain. The erstwhile Prussian …

Value And Social Mobility In Flaubert, Marshall C. Olds Sep 1999

Value And Social Mobility In Flaubert, Marshall C. Olds

French Language and Literature Papers

L’Education sentimentale may be construed as an historical novel at least insofar as it addresses questions of social change and enduring value as they are related to those of history and individual memory. As in Balzac and later in Proust, what is true for the individual applies to society. There is an especially Flaubertian understanding of movement in society and movement across time that remains tied more to demands of diegetic coherence than to laws of historical necessity, however. Singulative narration as it appears in the novel is a kind of smoke screen hiding a more pervasive iteration whereby the …

Technical Exercises: Use Them Or Lose Them?, Brenda Wristen Sep 1999

Technical Exercises: Use Them Or Lose Them?, Brenda Wristen

Glenn Korff School of Music: Faculty Publications

Piano pedagogues disagree about whether piano technique should be developed through practicing exercises or by isolating a musical passage which requires that a select technical motion be employed. Exercises are purely mechanical note patterns of varying length, usually only a few measures long. They are divorced from any musical content, and are devoted to only one technical skill. Like exercises, etudes usually concentrate upon developing one technical skill. However, etudes are fully developed pieces of some length which allow the player to build skill within a musical context. The essential difference between the practice of exercises versus isolating and conquering …

Editing Willa Cather: Defining The Territory, Susan J. Rosowski

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

But before telling about this work, I shall describe the structure of the project, which is collaborative in its conception and design. To ensure high quality and productivity, we have concentrated textual editing at the University of Nebraska. My colleague in the English Department, Charles Mignon, has been with the project from its beginning, and Fred Link, former chair of the English Department and director of University of Nebraska Press, joined the project shortly before he retired and has continued with it as a professor emeritus. Both brought editorial expertise to the project, one editing Edward Taylor, the other Restoration …

Failed Revolt, Faulty Edition: Review Of Designs Against Charleston: The Trial Record Of The Denmark Vesey Slave Conspiracy Of 1822Edward A. Pearson, Ed., Charles H. Lesser

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

On June 19, 1822, a court composed of two magistrates and five freeholders convened in Charleston, South Carolina. The discovery of a planned slave revolt led by Denmark Vesey, a free black carpenter, had alarmed the city just days earlier. Before the summer was out, Vesey and thirty-four enslaved men were hanged and about the same number sentenced to be transported outside the United States. Lionel H. Kennedy and Thomas Parker, the two magistrates who presided over the trials, published An Official Report of the Trials of Sundry Negroes ... later that year:, but Kennedy and Parker's version of the …

Ezra Pound: The Genius In The Bughouse: Review Of "I Cease Not To Yowl": Ezra Pound's Letters To Olivia Rossetti Agresti, Ed. Demetres P. Tryphonopoulos And Leon Surette., Peter Buitenhuis

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

I mention this personal encounter because in this volume of letters from Pound to Olivia Rossetti Agresti, mostly written from St. Elizabeths, there is not a single mention of the. conditions under which he was living. He had been confined to the hospital in January 1946 after being adjudged by psychiatrists "eccentric, querulous, and egocentric," and unfit to stand trial for treason as a consequence of broadcasting over Rome radio during the war. For a year, he was housed in a barred cell in the criminal ward, then released to a general ward, and finally, toward the end of his …

"Nearer My Subject To Thee": Twenty Years Of A Documentary Editor's Engagement With Emma Goldman, Candace Falk Sep 1999

"Nearer My Subject To Thee": Twenty Years Of A Documentary Editor's Engagement With Emma Goldman, Candace Falk

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

I am honored to be speaking today in the city where, in 1908, the editor of the St.Louis Mirror proclaimed that Emma Goldman was "the daughter of a dream" and that "there was nothing wrong with her gospel except that she was 8,000 years ahead of her age." Here, at the twentieth anniversary of the Association for Documentary Editing, the Women's Interest Network breakfast has become a time to bond in the early morning hours with my sister-editors (and brother-editors, too) and to reflect upon our own experience as women, as documentary editors, as people who have devoted many years …
