Communication And Freedom: Review Of The Correspondence Of John Dewey, Volumes 1-3: 1871-1952, Past Masters Series. Edited By Larry A. Hickman, General Editor; Barbara Levine, Editor; Anne Sharp, Editor; Harriet Furst Simon, Editor., Martin Coleman
Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)
Of all affairs, communication is the most wonderful," wrote American philosopher, psychologist, educator, social scientist, and political activist John Dewey (L.W.5.132). His enthusiasm for communication is apparent in the latest edition of The Correspondence of John Dewey. The CD-ROM contains over 21,600 letters as well as photographs, facsimiles, and assorted transcribed documents, including the FBI's 1943 report on Dewey, which notes that the "[s]ubject.. . apparently does nothing but write."
Moravians And Cherokees At Early Nineteenth-Century Springplace Mission, Georgia, Rowena Mcclinton
Moravians And Cherokees At Early Nineteenth-Century Springplace Mission, Georgia, Rowena Mcclinton
Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)
Moravian documents from Springplace, in particular the Gambold Springplace Diary, serve as examples of distinctiveness. The two-volume edition, The Moravian Springplace Mission to the Cherokees, 2 volumes, 7805-7873, and 7874-7827, now in press at the University of Nebraska Press, is evidence of just how intense times were for the Cherokees and their sojourners, the Moravians, who recorded those encounters almost daily for seventeen years.13 The first volume extends from 1805 to the beginning of the Creek War (1813); the second volume encompasses the following years, 1814-21. These diaries are, handwritten in German script, for the most part transcribed and translated …

Notes--The Times They Are A-Changin': Literary Documentary Editing In An Electronic Post-Structuralist World, Joel Myerson
Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)
I began working as a literary textual editor in the summer of 1968, my second year of graduate school at Northwestern University. At that time Northwestern housed The Writings of Herman Melville and I was taken on board as a trainee. I will always remember the shining moment when I realized that I had mastered the Hinman Collator and that a great future awaited me because of it. I spent the next three years working there, and in the next decade got up to speed on my own. I served as a vettor for the Center for Editions of American …

Review Of New Ways Of Looking At Old Texts, Iii. Papers Of The Renaissance English Text Society, 1997-2001. Ed. W Speed Hill., Eric L. Saak
Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)
New Ways of Looking at Old Texts should be the proverb pasted on every editor's bathroom mirror. Yet here it is the third such title of a collection of essays, all special publications of the Renaissance English Text Society, and may very well, as its predecessor did, find its way onto "graduate reading lists, there being no alternatives." If one can take seriously the ADE mission as being "to provide a scholarly community for people interested in editing historical and literary texts and to promote the use of these records by students, teachers, and scholars," and can interpret that mission …

Native America History, Comparative Genocide And The Holocaust: Historiography, Debate And Critical Analysis, Brenden W. Rensink
Native America History, Comparative Genocide And The Holocaust: Historiography, Debate And Critical Analysis, Brenden W. Rensink
Department of History: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
This study explores the complex issues surrounding comparative genocide studies and how Native American history relates to this field. Historical contexts for Native American historiography, particularly the scholarship of Vine Deloria, Jr., are examined. In addition, the manifestation of some problematic trends in the field is detailed through the mordant debate between scholars of native America and the Jewish Holocaust. Arguments over Holocaust uniqueness and how the depopulation of Native America should be classified typifies how certain aspects of comparative genocide studies have a propensity for subjectively motivated and biased methodology. Finally, a case study using the historiography of the …

First Encounters With Documentary Editing, Or, Tales In Training, Amy Speckart
Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)
Which of these things is not like the other?
SELECTION, VERIFICATION, ANNOTATION, SEX, ALCOHOL, INDEXING
Asking this question of seasoned editors (at an ADE meeting) might skew the answers a bit. Or maybe I missed something when I attended Camp Edit. At least, that is how it seems having talked to several veterans of the Camp Edit of the 1970s, which had a level of camaraderie that quite exceeded my own, comparatively chaste experience a year ago.
In this and other ways, training programs in documentary editing under the aegis of the NHPRC have changed over time, reflecting changes in …
Apology As Prosecution: The Trial Of Apuleius, Thomas Nelson Winter
Apology As Prosecution: The Trial Of Apuleius, Thomas Nelson Winter
Department of Classics and Religious Studies: Faculty Publications
In the middle of the second century A.D., Apuleius was accused of magic. This dissertation offers an essentially new view of how the trial originated, and a new view of the speech which Apuleius gave on the occasion. It points out that there is no reason to distrust the evidence of the Apology. The widespread view that Apuleius misrepresents the accusation lodged against him has no real support: nowhere has Apuleius been caught in an untruth; his principle accuser was a rash, convicted perjurer, his accusation against Apuleius was perjured, and it seems unlikely that a perjured accusation required …
Literary Symbolism, Marshall C. Olds
Literary Symbolism, Marshall C. Olds
French Language and Literature Papers
As a school of literature, Symbolism refers to three phases of a vital part of the development of literary modernism: first to an artistic movement in France and Belgium during the last decade and a half of the nineteenth century; then, retrospectively and most importantly, to its immediate sources in French poetry beginning in the 1850s; and finally to the influence that both of these had on European and American literatures throughout the first half of the twentieth century. The designation then, had its original and official application to the second and, it must be owned, from a literary point …

Immigration, The American West, And The Twentieth Century: German From Russia, Omaha Indian, And Vietnamese-Urban Villagers In Lincoln, Nebraska, Kurt Kinbacher
Department of History: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The North American West is a culturally and geographically diverse region that has long been a beacon for successive waves of human immigration and migration. A case in point, the population of Lincoln, Nebraska -- a capital city on the eastern cusp of the Great Plains -- was augmented during the twentieth century by significant influxes of Germans from Russia, Omaha Indians, and Vietnamese. Arriving in clusters beginning in 1876, 1941, and 1975 respectively, these newcomers were generally set in motion by dismal economic, social, or political situations in their sending nations. Seeking better lives, they entered a mainstream milieu …

Assessment Of Muscle Activity And Joint Angles In Small-Handed Pianists:, Brenda Wristen, Myung-Chul Jung, A. K. G. Wismer, M. Susan Hallbeck
Glenn Korff School of Music: Faculty Publications
This pilot study examined whether the use of a 7/8 keyboard contributed to the physical ease of small-handed pianists as compared with the conventional piano keyboard. A secondary research question focused on the progression of physical ease in pianists making the transition from one keyboard to the other. For the purposes of this study, a hand span of 8 inches or less was used to define a "small-handed" pianist. The goal was to measure muscle loading and hand span during performance of a specified musical excerpt. For data collection, each of the two participants was connected to an 8-channel electromyography …
Sight-Reading Versus Repertoire Performance On The Piano: A Case Study Using High-Speed Motion Analysis, Brenda Wristen, Sharon Evfans, Nikolaos Stergiou
Sight-Reading Versus Repertoire Performance On The Piano: A Case Study Using High-Speed Motion Analysis, Brenda Wristen, Sharon Evfans, Nikolaos Stergiou
Glenn Korff School of Music: Faculty Publications
This study was intended to examine whether differences exist in the motions employed by pianists when they are sightreading versus performing repertoire and to determine whether these differences can be quantified using high-speed motion capture technology. A secondary question of interest was whether or not an improvement in the efficiency of motion could be observed between two sight-reading trials of the same musical excerpt. This case study employed one subject and a six-camera digital infrared camera system to capture the motion of the pianist playing two trials of a repertoire piece and two trials of a sight-reading excerpt. Angular displacements …

Although Samuel R. Delany, Jr. has been publishing sci-fi /fantasy since the 1960s and Octavia E. Butler since the 1970s, and both were included in and thus canonized by the Norton Anthology of African American Literature (1999), still only a handful of Black novelists work the field. Not withstanding their canonization, their studied interpolation of race, gender, class, and sexual orientation into their novels, and the potential the genre has for shaping our hypertext, Internet-driven world, this state of affairs still obtains. Nevertheless these are heady times, as the other Black sci-fi novelists such as Jewell Gomez, Stephen Barnes, and …

‘Der Mensch Prüfe Sich Selbst ...’: Eine Predigt Nathanaël Köstlins Als Kontext Für Hölderlins Ersten Erhaltenen Brief, Priscilla A. Hayden-Roy
The Five Editions Of Old Mens Tears, Paul Royster
The Five Editions Of Old Mens Tears, Paul Royster
Joshua Scottow Papers
Following are reproduced the title pages of the five printed editions of Joshua Scottow’s Old Mens Tears for Their Own Declensions. It is certainly unusual for such a work to have been reprinted so many times over such a long period, 1691–1769, and it must testify to the continuing appeal of the tract in New England. Scottow died in 1698, and so had no hand in any of the editions except the first.
A multi-edition collation might yield a genetic tree, showing which editions derived from which others. Preliminary examination seems to suggest that the second and third editions …

Constructing Comanche Pasts: Public Memory And The Cuerno Verde Rest Area, Colorado City, Colorado, Douglas Seefeldt
Department of History: Faculty Publications
Twenty-five miles south of Pueblo, Colorado, where the southern plains meet the foothills, sits the community of Colorado City. Situated in the shadow of the southern Rockies' Wet Mountains, the Greater Greenhorn Valley is currently home to five thousand people, fifteen hundred of whom live in Colorado City proper. Here, at exit 74 on Interstate 25, stands the pride of the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT), the $2.7 million dollar Cuerno Verde Rest Area. The design and landscaping of this rest area set it apart from other such facilities; for example, the Plains Indian-inspired design elements that the architects incorporated …

Nothing Ought To Astonish Us: Confederate Civilians In The 1864 Shenandoah Valley Campaign, William G. Thomas Iii

Nancy Emerson lived in Staunton, Virginia, and kept a diary intermittently throughout the Civil War. Emerson was raised in Massachusetts and moved south with her brother, a Lutheran minister, in the late 1850s. They became Confederates, transplanting themselves and driving deep roots into the new soil around them. Emerson intended her diary to be read by her "northern friends, should any of them have the curiosity to read [it] ." She felt increasingly sick with what she thought might be typhoid fever, so she directed that the journal "be forwarded to" her northern friends "at some future time." She wondered …

L'Alto Adige Come Regione Di Transito Dei Rifugiati (1945-1950), Gerald Steinacher
Department of History: Faculty Publications
After WWII, there were millions of refugees in Germany, Austria, & Italy. By 1946, those who could be were repatriated. But a new wave of Holocaust survivors, ethnic Germans, and anticommunists from the East was to follow. Only solution for these: integration into new countries or emigration overseas. For the occasion, Italy became a transit route. The shortest way to seaports such, as Genoa, ran over the Brenner and other passes. At first it was mainly Italian forced labourers from Germany, making that route to go home. Former Nazi camps, like Bolzano's, became refugee camps. Many Holocaust survivors used the …

"The Cape Of Last Hope": The Postwar Flight Of Nazi War Criminals Through South Tyrol/Italy To South America, Gerald Steinacher
Department of History: Faculty Publications
How was the flight of Nazi war criminals from Europe possible in practical terms? How did the concrete steps look, which groups, individuals, and institutions in Italy were involved in them? What were their motives and what was the form of their concrete support? Two elements will be singled out in this article: the flight over the Alps to Genoa or the special role of Italy and the border province of South Tyrol, and the escape assistance from the Argentine government.

Islamic Art: An Exploration Of Pattern, Carol Bier
Textile Research Works
As an historian of Islamic art in the Department of Art History at the Maryland Institute College of Art, I am continually learning as I endeavor to teach my students about pattern. Teaching about pattern in Islamic art has facilitated my own exploration of geometry in ways that also benefits my students. This visual presentation explores the results of a single assignment that pertains to coloring a linear plate reproduced in Bourgoin’s classic work [6], Arabic Geometrical Pattern and Design.
The Sexual Sinthome, Geneviève Morel, Roland K. Végső
The Sexual Sinthome, Geneviève Morel, Roland K. Végső
Department of English: Faculty Publications
Psychoanalysis possesses the means to think the difference of the sexes without relying on the phallus. Lacanian theory of the sinthome offers an alternative by articulating a new quadruplicity (R, S, I, and the sinthome), which allows us to think the relation between the sexes and the generations without necessarily referring to the Name-of-the-Father or the phallus as absolute norms. Thanks to this theory, we can avoid the moral and political prejudices that accompany the grand questions of society posed to us at the dawn of the 21st century: the treatment of “mental health,” the legislation of marriage, filiation, and …

recent Chronicle of Higher Education column, Stanley Fish describes a phone call he received after the death of Jacques Derrida from a reporter who was curious as to what would succeed high theory as the "center of energy in the academy." "I answered like a shot," Fish writes, "religion" (1). For many, Fish's prophecy might create a feeling of uneasiness; after all, in academic culture, religious ideologies are often considered hindrances to-not vehicles for-critical thought. This feeling may be especially true in regard to Christianity, which is often conflated with conservative politics and fundamentalism both in and outside of the …
Shakespeare And The Marginalized “Others”, Carole Levin
Shakespeare And The Marginalized “Others”, Carole Levin
Department of History: Faculty Publications
When we think of the London and England of Shakespeare and Elizabeth I, traditionally we have assumed a fairly homogeneous society. But more recently scholars have recognized that England, and especially the London of early modern England, was instead a truly heterogeneous place, as was the Edinburgh of early modern Scotland. In early modern British cities, there was a wide range of peoples of different statuses and backgrounds. This chapter discusses the actual lives of those somehow perceived as different, attitudes about them, and how these attitudes were reflected in the drama of the time, especially in the works of …

Sister-Subject/Sister-Queen: Elizabeth I Among Her Siblings, Carole Levin
Department of History: Faculty Publications
Elizabeth Tudor had one older half-sister and one younger half-brother by the first and third of her father Henry VIII’s wives. During her father’s reign the young Elizabeth spent a fair amount of time with one or the other of her siblings, either at court or one of the other residences where she lived. Though her relationship with her brother Edward was easier, Mary, 17 years older than her younger sister, could be kind to the child who had lost her mother in such a horrific manner—even though she loathed Elizabeth’s mother Anne Boleyn. This essay interrogates the relationships Elizabeth …
