Human Rights And China’S Public Diplomacy, Hongmei Li
Human Rights And China’S Public Diplomacy, Hongmei Li
China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012
While the Tournament of Roses is busy preparing for the Pasadena Rose Parade on Jan. 1, 2009, it is interesting to revisit a controversy over a Beijing Olympic float for the 2008 parade for at least three reasons: (1) the controversy, largely provoked by FLG practitioners and other human rights groups, attracted huge media attention and the Pasadena city government and its human relations commission held several meetings to consider its position; (2) some analogies can be drawn between the controversy and the protests against the overseas leg of the Beijing Olympic torch relay; (3) the controversy also indicates the …
Transnational Community In Demetria Martínez’S Mother Tongue, Ariana Vigil
Transnational Community In Demetria Martínez’S Mother Tongue, Ariana Vigil
Department of English: Faculty Publications
Relying on feminist theory concerning difference, identity, gender, and solidarity, “Transnational Community in Demetria Martínez’s Mother Tongue” reads Martínez’s 1994 novel through a transnational feminist lens. I point out that Mother Tongue complicates identification with the other and resists the impulse by characters to elide national, racial, and sexual difference. However, the articulation of community identities and the portrayal of characters as members of both oppressed communities and communities in resistance offers a new and provocative way to understand how individuals interact with identity and attend to important differences while nonetheless working for global change. The resulting analysis contributes …

Review Of Kenneth Liberman, Dialectical Practice In Tibetan Philosophical Culture: An Ethnomethodological Inquiry Into Formal Reasoning, Yaroslav Komarovski
Department of Classics and Religious Studies: Faculty Publications
Chapters 4–9 are the most important part of the book. Here Liberman displays his interpretive skills to the fullest. He explores various aspects of directly observed, live debate processes, drawing on the work of Schutz, Husserl, Durkheim (to mention just a few), as well as Buddhist thinkers Nagarjuna, Sakya Pandita, Tsongkhapa, and others. Liberman exhaustively explains the organization and mechanics of debates, the public nature of reasoning, negative dialectics employed by debaters, strategies and techniques such as absurd consequences, hand-claps, ridicule, and repetition, and other matters.
Rural Consumers’ Online Shopping For Food And Fiber Products As A Form Of Outshopping, Sharon J. Lennon, Young Ha, Kim K. P. Johnson, Cynthia R. Jasper, Mary Lynn Damhorst, Nancy Lyons
Rural Consumers’ Online Shopping For Food And Fiber Products As A Form Of Outshopping, Sharon J. Lennon, Young Ha, Kim K. P. Johnson, Cynthia R. Jasper, Mary Lynn Damhorst, Nancy Lyons
Department of Textiles, Merchandising and Fashion Design: Faculty Publications
The purpose of the research was to longitudinally investigate rural consumers’ online shopping for food and fiber products as a function of satisfaction with local retailing and outshopping. Innovation diffusion theory was used to guide the research. Eight hundred seventy-nine rural consumers from 11 states completed surveys twice (in 2000 and 2003). Data were analyzed using structural equation modeling and analyses of variance. Dissatisfaction with local retailing in 2000 was a powerful driver of outshopping, beliefs about online shopping, and online shopping (both in 2000 and in 2003). Outshopping was positively related to online shopping at both points in time, …
The Holocaust In The Soviet Union, Yitzhak Arad
The Holocaust In The Soviet Union, Yitzhak Arad
University of Nebraska Press: Sample Books and Chapters
The Holocaust in the Soviet Union is the most complete account to date of the Soviet Jews during the World War II and the Holocaust (1941–45). Reports, records, documents, and research previously unavailable in English enable Yitzhak Arad to trace the Holocaust in the German-occupied territories of the Soviet Union through three separate periods in which German political and military goals in the occupied territories dictated the treatment of the Jews. Arad’s examination of the differences between the Holocaust in the Soviet Union compared to other European nations reveals how Nazi ideological attacks on the Soviet Union, which included war …
Mexicans In Revolution, 1910-1946, William Howard Beezley, Colin M. Maclachlan
Mexicans In Revolution, 1910-1946, William Howard Beezley, Colin M. Maclachlan
University of Nebraska Press: Sample Books and Chapters
On November 20, 1910, Mexicans initiated the world’s first popular social revolution. The unbalanced progress of the previous regime triggered violence and mobilized individuals from all classes to demand social and economic justice. In the process they shaped modern Mexico at a cost of two million lives. This accessible and gripping account guides the reader through the intricacies of the revolution, focusing on the revolutionaries as a group and the implementation of social and political changes. In this volume written for the revolution's centennial, William H. Beezley and Colin M. MacLachlan recount how the revolutionary generation laid the foundation for …
Delaware Politics And Government, William W. Boyer, Edward C. Ratledge
Delaware Politics And Government, William W. Boyer, Edward C. Ratledge
University of Nebraska Press: Sample Books and Chapters
This volume provides a comprehensive analysis of both the historical and the contemporary dimensions of the politics and government of the “First State.” Once a sparsely populated, agrarian, and relatively insignificant polity, Delaware has become a densely and diversely populated financial and legal center often called the “corporation capital of the world.” Delaware’s prime location has been central to its development and transition from a goods-producing economy to a fast-growing, service-based economy. Despite its diminutive size, Delaware is, in many ways, the nation’s preferred corporate home. William W. Boyer and Edward C. Ratledge provide an overview of Delaware’s history, structure, …
Searching For Tamsen Donner, Gabrielle Burton
Searching For Tamsen Donner, Gabrielle Burton
University of Nebraska Press: Sample Books and Chapters
Tamsen Donner. For most the name conjures the ill-fated Donner party trapped in the snows of the Sierra Nevada Mountains in 1846–47. Others might know Tamsen as the stoic pioneer woman who saw her children to safety but stayed with her dying husband at the cost of her own life. For Gabrielle Burton, Tamsen’s story, fascinating in its own right, had long seemed something more: the story of a woman’s life writ large, one whose impossible balancing of self, motherhood, and marriage spoke to Burton’s own experience. This book tells of Burton’s search to solve the mystery of Tamsen Donner …

University of Nebraska Press: Sample Books and Chapters
When Blue Bird and her grandmother leave their family’s camp to gather beans for the long, threatening winter, they inadvertently avoid the horrible fate that befalls the rest of the family. Luckily, the two women are adopted by a nearby Dakota community and are eventually integrated into their kinship circles. Ella Cara Deloria’s tale follows Blue Bird and her daughter, Waterlily, through the intricate kinship practices that created unity among her people. Waterlily, published after Deloria’s death and generally viewed as the masterpiece of her career, offers a captivating glimpse into the daily life of the nineteenth-century Sioux. This …

Under The Big Sky: A Biography Of A. B. Guthrie Jr., Jackson J. Benson
University of Nebraska Press: Sample Books and Chapters
Author of The Big Sky series, The Way West, and the screenplay for the classic Shane, among many other timeless stories of frontier mountain men, icon of Western literature A. B. “Bud” Guthrie Jr. brought a blazing realism to the story of the West. That realism, which astounded and even shocked some readers, came out of the depth of Guthrie’s historical research and an acuity that had seldom been seen in the work of Western novelists. In Under the Big Sky, the latest in his celebrated series of biographies of Western writers, Jackson J. Benson details the …

Louise Pound (1872–1958) was a distinguished literary scholar, renowned athlete, accomplished musician, and devoted women’s sports advocate. She is perhaps best remembered for her groundbreaking work in the field of linguistics and folklore and for her role as the first woman president of the Modern Language Association. A member of a distinguished Nebraska family that included her brother, the prominent legal scholar Roscoe Pound, Louise completed her undergraduate education at the University of Nebraska. When American universities wouldn’t admit her for graduate study, she went on to obtain a PhD in Heidelberg, Germany. She returned to the University of Nebraska–Lincoln …
The Age Of The Ship Of The Line: The British And French Navies, 1650-1815, Jonathan R. Dull
The Age Of The Ship Of The Line: The British And French Navies, 1650-1815, Jonathan R. Dull
University of Nebraska Press: Sample Books and Chapters
For nearly two hundred years huge wooden warships called “ships of the line” dominated war at sea and were thus instrumental in the European struggle for power and the spread of imperialism. Foremost among the great naval powers were Great Britain and France, whose advanced economies could support large numbers of these expensive ships. This book, the first joint history of these great navies, offers a uniquely impartial and comprehensive picture of the two forces —their shipbuilding programs, naval campaigns, and battles, and their wartime strategies and diplomacy. Jonathan R. Dull is the author of two award-winning histories of the …

Border Crossings: Transnational Americanist Anthopology, Kathleen S. Fine-Dare, Steven L. Rubenstein
University of Nebraska Press: Sample Books and Chapters
For anthropologists and social scientists working in North and South America, the past few decades have brought considerable change as issues such as repatriation, cultural jurisdiction, and revitalization movements have swept across the hemisphere. Today scholars are rethinking both how and why they study culture as they gain a new appreciation for the impact they have on the people they study. Key to this reassessment of the social sciences is a rethinking of the concept of borders: not only between cultures and nations but between disciplines such as archaeology and cultural anthropology, between past and present, and between anthropologists and …
All Our Stories Are Here: Critical Perspectives On Montana Literature, Brady Harrison
All Our Stories Are Here: Critical Perspectives On Montana Literature, Brady Harrison
University of Nebraska Press: Sample Books and Chapters
This wide-ranging collection of essays addresses a diverse and expanded vision of Montana literature, offering new readings of both canonical and overlooked texts. Although a handful of Montana writers such as Richard Hugo, A. B. Guthrie Jr., D’Arcy McNickle, and James Welch have received considerable critical attention, sizable gaps remain in the analysis of the state’s ever-growing and ever-evolving canon. The twelve essays in All Our Stories Are Here not only build on the exemplary, foundational work of other writers but also open further interpretative and critical conversations. Expanding on the critical paradigms of the past and bringing to bear …
Alice In Jamesland: The Story Of Alice Howe Gibbens James, Susan E. Gunter
Alice In Jamesland: The Story Of Alice Howe Gibbens James, Susan E. Gunter
University of Nebraska Press: Sample Books and Chapters
Alice in Jamesland, the first biography of Alice Howe Gibbens James—wife of the psychologist and philosopher William James, and sister-in-law of novelist Henry James—was made possible by the rediscovery of hundreds of her letters and papers thought to be destroyed in the 1960s. Encompassing European travel, Civil War profiteering, suicide, a stormy courtship, séances, psychedelic mushrooms, the death of a child, and an enduring love story, Alice in Jamesland is a portrait of a nineteenth-century upper-middle-class marriage, told often through Alice’s own letters and made all the more dynamic because of her role in the James family. Susan E. …

Bourdieu In Algeria: Colonial Politics, Ethnographic Practices, Theoretical Developments, Jane E. Goodman, Paul A. Silverstein
University of Nebraska Press: Sample Books and Chapters
The shadow cast by Pierre Bourdieu’s theory is large and well documented, but his early ethnographic work in Algeria is less well known and often overlooked. This volume, the first critical examination of Bourdieu’s early fieldwork and its impact on his larger body of social theory, represents an original and much-needed contribution to the field. Its six essays reappraise Bourdieu’s original research in light of contemporary processes and make substantial contributions to the ethnography of North Africa. The contributors are scholars of North Africa and France, and each is actively engaged with Bourdieu’s work. Bourdieu in Algeria offers a unique …
How To Cook A Tapir: A Memoir Of Belize, Joan Fry
How To Cook A Tapir: A Memoir Of Belize, Joan Fry
University of Nebraska Press: Sample Books and Chapters
In 1962 Joan Fry was a college sophomore recently married to a dashing anthropologist. Naively consenting to a year-long “working honeymoon” in British Honduras (now Belize), she soon found herself living in a remote Kekchi village deep in the rainforest. Because Fry had no cooking or housekeeping experience, the romance of living in a hut and learning to cook on a makeshift stove quickly faded. Guided by the village women and their children, this twenty-year-old American who had never made more than instant coffee came eventually to love the people and the food that at first had seemed so foreign. …

What combination of forces precipitated urban development in the ancient Mediterranean world? Are the remnants of such forces identifiable in the archaeological record? Since the Mediterranean basin presented itself as an ethnically diverse region where goods and services were transported largely by water, to what degree was urban development at the local level stimulated by the expansion of overseas empires? More specifically, does a ›world system‹ theoretical construct adequately address the phenomenon of urban development in the ancient Mediterranean world? This construct has gained significant popularity with those attempting to explain the pace and scale of development in the pre-classical …

De La Romántica A La Mujer Nueva: La Representación De La Mujer En La Literatura Española Del Siglo Xix, Iker González-Allende
Of Vapor Beneath The Evening Star, Sarah Barnard Blitz
Of Vapor Beneath The Evening Star, Sarah Barnard Blitz
School of Art, Art History, and Design: Theses and Student Creative Work
The things we see are but shadows of reality. We are in a cave, but if we tum around we can see the fire that casts the shadows we call reality. We can take the difficult journey to see the beauty and magic that is our true world. Stories such as this, Plato's allegory of the cave in The Republic, have taught for centuries that there is more to our world than we initially know. Allegory and metaphor can help us begin to understand the shadows for what they are. II is in our hearts and our imaginations that we …
Dysfunctionation, Samuel B. Rapien
Dysfunctionation, Samuel B. Rapien
School of Art, Art History, and Design: Theses and Student Creative Work
We live in a society that perpetuates, if not celebrates, dysfunctional attitudes. The intention of my work is to point out the follies, hypocrisy, and failings of our society. With my ink drawings, I use a combination of humor and rage to mirror a grotesquely exaggerated reflection of my vexed world view filtered through uncanny and surreal imagery. I am a satirist; I use sarcasm, irony, and expressions of anger to criticize social standards, at times with humor, but always with a certain amount of cynicism. With subjects ranging from artifice, historical and modern sexuality, our obsession with violence, inequality, …
Bringing Spiritual Symbolism To A Material Plane, Seth Green
Bringing Spiritual Symbolism To A Material Plane, Seth Green
School of Art, Art History, and Design: Theses and Student Creative Work
I am a ceramic vessel maker who has developed a passion for the aesthetic, historical and technical aspects of ceramics, merging the three in my work. Identifying the objects I make as vessels rather than pots (the contemporary term for the word pottery) allows me to clarify where they belong in the world and my intentions for their function. My vessels included in this exhibition primarily focus on spiritual symbolism rather than the traditional daily uses of pottery. My work is influenced by spiritually symbolic elements used in the creation of religious architecture. Specific inspirations include the temples, palaces and …
Catch Shadow, Hold Light, Autumn Cipala
Catch Shadow, Hold Light, Autumn Cipala
School of Art, Art History, and Design: Theses and Student Creative Work
I aspire to make forms that quietly engage the viewer, inspire curiosity, and invite a sense of discovery. These are objects that ask one to slow down, and to notice the subtleties of form, surface, and function. My intention is for these vessels to be used mindfully. An assuredness of form is essential to this work. Curves, volume and proportion are balanced with restraint. I prefer complex yet clean forms that are enhanced by soft translucent glazes. Consideration of balance continues as pattern is balanced with unadorned surface, cool color with warm, cup with saucer. I am attracted to glazes …
View Of The Void, John E. Carrasco
View Of The Void, John E. Carrasco
School of Art, Art History, and Design: Theses and Student Creative Work
Memories form, memories fade, and memories are lost. Small cavities of emptiness replace memories that have drifted away, where they then spread like thin cracks on the surface and diverge to form a void. Within the hollows of these voids, perplexities in mental and physical conditions emerge. Such perplexities of the void have captured my attention. With this body of Sculpture, defining and embodying the mental void within a physical presence is my ultimate goal. Methods have been instituted to aid in the creation and definition of the nonentity. Skins are developed to encase a void, enabling one to see …
From Particles To Planets: Exploring The Physical In Art, Susan J. Soriente
From Particles To Planets: Exploring The Physical In Art, Susan J. Soriente
Sheldon Museum of Art: Catalogs and Publications
Our physical reality-its span, depth and breadth; from microcosm to macrocosm, from particle to planet-may be experienced through the eye of the artist as we contemplate a work of art.
It is clear that the physical is a primary element of art, but that statement does not encompass the multitude of ways the physical may be expressed. From antiquity, artists have used their art to encapsulate and express the world, or to change, invent and portray the physical to express their view of reality.
Line, form, color, texture and composition produce a visual experience of a subject that delineates and …

Evolving Eden, Sharon L. Kennedy
Evolving Eden, Sharon L. Kennedy
Sheldon Museum of Art: Catalogs and Publications
Eden is an idealized place where one experiences happiness, harmony and a sense of timelessness. While some believe this can only be experienced after death, others are convinced that the only Eden is the one we currently inhabit and therefore good stewardship is needed in order to sustain it. Photographers have historically captured our evolving planet and have brought to light its beauty as well as its destruction due to human intervention.
The artists in Evolving Eden address the much-discussed topic of the environment and our relationship with our surroundings, using three distinct approaches. While Arno Rafael Minkkinen's spiritual images …
The Unknown Blakelock, Sharon L. Kennedy
The Unknown Blakelock, Sharon L. Kennedy
Sheldon Museum of Art: Catalogs and Publications
Understanding the work of nineteenth-century American painter Ralph Albert Blakelock (1847-1919) has proven elusive despite several exhibitions and publications about his life and art. As Sheldon Director Emeritus, author, and founder of the Nebraska Blakelock Inventory Project Norman Geske observes, "Essentially self-taught, Blakelock proceeded with an imagination that was singularly free of any allegiance to established procedures, allowing him ... to address subjects as diverse as Jamaica, upper Manhattan Island, and the ocean shore - to find new solutions to differing pictorial problems. In some instances, it is clear he was cognizant of stylistic innovations in the higher artistic community. …
Women Librarians In Nigerian Universities: Their Status, Occupational Characteristics, And Development, Chinwe M. T. Nwezeh
Women Librarians In Nigerian Universities: Their Status, Occupational Characteristics, And Development, Chinwe M. T. Nwezeh
E-JASL: Electronic Journal of Academic and Special Librarianship (1999-2009, Volumes 1-10)
Abstract
This paper investigates the current status and occupational characteristics of professional academic women librarians in Nigeria. This paper also discusses the concept of gender participation in librarianship and the effects on the profession with respect to females. General obstacles faced by females in librarianship are examined. The findings reveal that despite some cultural traits that still affect the woman’s position, women academic librarians in Nigeria can still advance to any height in the profession. This study shows that they do not experience any form of discrimination from their male counterparts in terms of remuneration or career development.
