Futurist Fiction & Fantasy: The Racial Establishment, Gregory E. Rutledge Sep 2006

Futurist Fiction & Fantasy: The Racial Establishment, Gregory E. Rutledge

Department of English: Faculty Publications

Futurist fiction and fantasy encompasses a variety of subgenres: hard science fiction, speculative fiction, fantasy, sword-and-sorcerer fantasy, and cyberpunk. Unfortunately, even though nearly a century has expired since the advent of futurist fiction and fantasy, Richard Pryor’s observation and a call for action is still viable. Despite the growing number of Black futurist fiction and fantasy writers, the proportion of Black futurist fiction and fantasy authors to White futurist fiction and fantasy authors is dismal. This disproportion means that Black futurist fiction and fantasy authors have a limited presence in the industry. Thus, although Black futurist fiction and fantasy authors …

"Gorilla Trails In Paradise": Carl Akeley, Mary Bradley, And The American Search For The Missing Link, Jeannette Eileen Jones Sep 2006

"Gorilla Trails In Paradise": Carl Akeley, Mary Bradley, And The American Search For The Missing Link, Jeannette Eileen Jones

Department of History: Faculty Publications

“Gorilla Trails in Paradise” explores the American obsession with primates and evolution, as informed by notions of race and sexuality, as an important current in American cultural and intellectual history during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. This preoccupation began with queries regarding the relationship between man and ape in light of evolutionary theories that predated the publication of Darwin’s seminal treatises. However, Darwinian evolution brought the question of that relationship into mainstream discourse. No longer confined to the musings of learned white men, the ape–human puzzle informed American popular thought and popular culture by the late nineteenth century. …

Review Of Imagining The Primitive In Naturalist And Modernist Literature By Gina M. Rossetti, Melissa J. Homestead Sep 2006

Review Of Imagining The Primitive In Naturalist And Modernist Literature By Gina M. Rossetti, Melissa J. Homestead

Department of English: Faculty Publications

Rossetti (St. Xavier Univ.) argues that representations of characters as “primitives” in late 19th and early-20th century literary texts served to “limn the boundaries of American Identity.” Much like Walker Been Michaels in Our America: Nativism, Modernism, and Pluralism (CH, Mar’ 96, 33-3775), she focuses primarily on ways that literary representations seek to constitute the national family as white in the face of increasing numbers of ethnic and racial others. Rossetti brings an interesting set of nonliterary texts to this conversation, namely writings by late-19th- and early 20th-centruy sociologists and other cultural analysts, and the juxtapositions these provide allow interesting …

German Jewish Printing In The Reformation Era (1530-1633), Stephen G. Burnett Sep 2006

German Jewish Printing In The Reformation Era (1530-1633), Stephen G. Burnett

Department of Classics and Religious Studies: Faculty Publications

In this study I will consider how the Reformation affected the Jewish printers of sixteenth-century Germany and their businesses as they attempted to produce and sell Jewish books to a largely Jewish clientele. First I will present capsule histories of the various presses as they operated both before the suppression of the Talmud in 1553, and then afterwards in a new climate of restrictions and press controls. Then I will discuss aspects of the Hebrew printing business, including the creation of printable texts (authors, editors, and censors), customer demand for Jewish books, and how presses financed their activities. And finally, …

Introduction To Viktoria Tokareva’S Life And Works, Lyubov Popov, Radha Balasubramanian

Russian Language and Literature Papers

Viktoria Tokareva, a well-known screenwriter, is also a famous contemporary short story writer in Russia. She began writing short stories and screenplays in the late 1960s and she has distinguished herself as a writer not only in Russia, but also worldwide. Her films have won awards, and her stories have been widely read and translated. She wrote before the break-up of the Soviet Union, when there was tight censorship and after “glasnost”, when the writers began to enjoy greater freedom. The country’s social and political turmoil is set as a vivid background to Tokareva’s portrayal of human beings and their …

Reading With Your Ears: The Uses Of Opera In Literature, James E. Ford Jul 2006

Reading With Your Ears: The Uses Of Opera In Literature, James E. Ford

Music and Literature Archive

In both the East and the West the relationship between opera and literature is ancient and profound. As the Disciples of the Pear Garden would know, many of the most popular works of the Beijing Opera are based on famous Chinese historical novels. And when a group of late Sixteenth-Century Italians created Western opera they were trying to revive Greek tragedy. (They knew that Greek tragedy was sung in some fashion and the speaking-to-music we know as recitiative was their attempt to reproduce that ancient practice.) Of course, many, many Western operas have been based on plays, novels, and short …

Abstract

This article addresses the role of major literary award-winning books and authors in the medium-sized academic library. Review Of The Modern World Of Neith Boyce: Autobiography And Diaries. Ed. Carol Deboer-Langworthy., Mary Jo Binker Jul 2006

Review Of The Modern World Of Neith Boyce: Autobiography And Diaries. Ed. Carol Deboer-Langworthy., Mary Jo Binker

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979-2011)

Recent scholarship has focused on Boyce's relationship with Hapgood as the prototype of the modern open marriage. In her book, Intimate Warriors, editor Ellen Kay Trimberger uses portions of both writers' works to argue that the couple's "warfare" (33)-over his affairs, her desire to work, and his aversion to working at all-enhanced her creativity and kept the marriage alive. l Carol DeBoer-Langworthy takes the opposite view. In her book, The Modern World of Neith Boyce, she argues that Boyce's difficult marriage jeopardized her health, sapped her creative energy, and ultimately shortened her career. She maintains that Boyce's autobiographical writings, published …

The Missing Link: The Legacy Of Martin Luther King, Jr.'S Early Sermons, Susan Englander

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979-2011)

In 1997 King Papers Project director Clayborne Carson obtained a substantial body of such materials. Mrs. Coretta Scott King granted the King Papers Project permission to examine papers kept in boxes in the basement of the home that became the King residence in 1965 and to identify items that were appropriate for the Project's mission. The most significant discovery resulting from this exploration was a private file of sermon materials King kept in his study. A battered cardboard box held over two hundred folders containing handwritten outlines, drafts, and prayers as well as academic papers, published articles, and correspondence. The …

The Value Of Professional Development Activities In Advancing The Careers Of Women Chief Academic Officers In Community Colleges, Brent D. Cejda Jul 2006

The Value Of Professional Development Activities In Advancing The Careers Of Women Chief Academic Officers In Community Colleges, Brent D. Cejda

Journal of Women in Educational Leadership

Previous research has shown that there are not distinct career lines leading to the chief academic officer (CAO) position in community colleges. Rather, it appears that a variety of skills and experiences contribute to advancement to this position. This paper examines the perceptions of women CAOs as to the importance of professional development activities to their career advancement. Responses from women community college CAOs from nine states (Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas, Utah, and Wyoming) indicate that current position holders perceive that a number of professional development experiences were important to their advancement to the CAO position.

The Art (Not Science) Of Grants Management, Doreen Gosmire

Journal of Women in Educational Leadership

Currently there are more than fifty thousand nonprofit agencies and organizations, including schools, that receive federal grants. These entities invest substantial time and money in seeking grant dollars (Schumacher, 2005). Recipients underestimate the investment and complexity associated with managing grants. The work of creating ownership, establishing and maintaining progress, spending funds wisely and living the grant cycle requires the creativity and diligence of the finest artist.

Friends Are Like Diamonds, Marilyn L. Grady

Journal of Women in Educational Leadership

In 2006, Bob Greene's And You Know You Should Be Glad: A True Story of Lifelong Friendship appeared. This book is the story of the same five fellows. It is a revealing portrait of the friendships that have endured in their lives. Families, careers, distance and years have not weakened the bonds of friendship for these five friends. Their commitment to each other in a time of great challenge is memorable and worthy of attention. They remind us how we have lived our friendships.

First Things First: Writing Strategies--Passion Is The Key, Marilyn L. Grady

Journal of Women in Educational Leadership

One of the longest and most tiring writing tasks is writing someone else's passion. This is the situation when you accept a writing assignment on a topic that is removed from your core interests and experiences. This is much like being given a writing assignment on a topic you know little about and care even less about-the result of such a writing activity is often dismal. The experience is dreadful for the writer and tedious for the reader. Save us from this misery!

Review Of Her Place At The Table: A Woman's Guide To Negotiating Five Key Challenges To Leadership Success By D. M. Kolb, J. Williams, And C. Frohlinger, Susan C. Davenport

Journal of Women in Educational Leadership

The book, Her Place at the Table: A Woman's Guide to Negotiating Five Key Challenges to Leadership Success, discussed the challenges women still face as they transition to leadership positions. According to the authors, "with their numbers exceeding 50%, women are well represented in the middle ranks of management and the professions, yet, today they hold less than I % of the top leadership positions" (p. 2). The lack of women in these positions is attributed in part to research demonstrating that women lack "the presumption of credibility and competence when she takes on a leadership role" (p. 3). Because …

Women In History--Maria Poveka Martinez, Tina Koeppe

Journal of Women in Educational Leadership

Native American artisan Maria Poveka Martinez played a vital role in the revival of pottery making throughout the Southwest United States. Born in 1887 in the San Ildefonso region of New Mexico, Maria first made pottery as a child and received encouragement from her aunt, who was an excellent potter. 1907 is the year that Maria began her pottery career in earnest. During this year, Maria's husband Julian worked as a digger at an archeological site near their pueblo. Maria was at the* excavation site when the diggers uncovered shards of decorated black on cream pottery. She took great interest …

Top Ten Reasons To Seek Professional Challenges, Trudy A. Salsberry

Journal of Women in Educational Leadership

When we first enter a new role in a profession, the challenges for growth are constant and almost overwhelming. As we gain experience and confidence, there is always a chance that what was once 'novel' becomes routine. Seeking professional challenges are the answer to remaining motivated and productive as we move from novice to expert. This past spring, I chose to take my own advice and engage in a role that was new me ... serving as an overseas school evaluator.

A Great Lady: Review Of The Selected Letters Of Dolley Payne Madison. Edited By David B. Mattern And Holly C. Shulman., Beverly Wilson Palmer

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979-2011)

Why is Dolley Madison considered one of the most important nineteenth-century American women and the greatest First Lady until Eleanor Roosevelt assumed the position in 1933?" In their introduction to Chapter Three, editors Mattern and Shulman pose this question as the thesis of The Selected Letters of Dolley Payne Madison (92). The editors' question is a provocative one. Who remembers Sarah Childress Polk? Ida Saxton McKinley? Others, such as Abigail Smith Adams or Edith Bolling Wilson, come to mind but their roles were not like the ones Dolley Madison fashioned for herself as First Lady. In this volume we see …

Notes--Teaching The Skills Of Documentary Editing, Ann R. Hawkins

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979-2011)

As textual or documentary editors, we perform a range of tasks that translate exceptionally well into classroom practice. The kinds of materials that readers need from our editions are produced by the kinds of skills that our students need to succeed in their college coursework and professional lives. But just as the foundational work of editors has often been devalued by critics and theorists uninterested in where the texts they study come from, we have also overlooked the great benefit that students can gain from doing the work that editors do.

In this essay, I will overview briefly the kinds …

Voices Of Women In The Field--Great Discoveries And Painful-At-The-Time Mistakes, Shari Cole Hoffman

Journal of Women in Educational Leadership

My professional career has varied in leadership experiences. Unlike women who are coming of age today in leadership positions, I never had a "plan" for my professional career moves. I simply went about selecting the next interesting opportunity. Looking back, this may not have always been in my best interest, but I certainly had a full life of experiences because of this serendipitous approach. Here are some ideas I learned along the way. In some cases, they were great discoveries. However, in most cases, they were painful-at-the-time mistakes that turned into life lessons.

Glenn Korff School of Music: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Creative Work, and Performance

“Music at the Fair!” gives the daily musical programs for The Trans-Mississippi and International Exposition, held in Omaha, Nebraska, June 1 through October 31, 1898.

The Trans-Mississippi and International Exposition brought an unprecedented array of local, national, and international musical acts to Omaha, NE in 1898. This served to designate Omaha, "the gateway to the west" as a musical hub, as well as to incite musical excitement in the region. Some of the more popular acts featured were the Theodore Thomas Orchestra, the U.S. Marine Band, and the Apollo Club of Chicago. Many more groups and their musical programs can …

Review Of Livestock Hotels: America's Historic Stockyards By J'Nell L. Pate, David Nesheim

Department of History: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Heretofore, historians have overlooked the stockyards' role in the development of the meat industry, choosing to focus on railroads and the packing giants. Livestock Hotels, although not definitive, is the first comprehensive examination of the stockyard industry. Complete with a glossary of stockyard terminology, several statistical tables, photographs of most of the stockyards mentioned, and a map, Livestock Hotels offers an important compendium of data while suggesting many questions for further research.
