The Personality Of Pedro Menendez, Ruthjeanne Bellamy
Florida Historical Quarterly
In connection with the annual meeting of the Society there were held the finals in an essay contest on certain subjects of Florida’s history open to all Florida high school students, for prizes offered by Mr. Irving Bacheller and the Society. Miss Bellamy, of the Orlando High School, won the first prize for girls with the essay above. The first prize for boys went to James Erwin of the St. Augustine High School, who wrote also on Menendez. Second prizes were won by Miss Florence Tyner, of the Sanford High School, who spoke on Ponce de Leon and Early Florida …
The Reverend James Seymour, S.P.G., Missionary In Florida, Edgar Legare Pennington
The Reverend James Seymour, S.P.G., Missionary In Florida, Edgar Legare Pennington
Florida Historical Quarterly
When the Floridas became English territory, in 1763, there was the characteristic effort to reproduce in the new province whatever the mother country deemed essential. In less than a year Anglican missionaries were on the ground; and we find a record of nine clergymen “licensed to the plantations by the Bishops of London from the year 1745 inclusive”.
St. Joseph, An Episode Of The Economic And Political History Of Florida, Part I, James Owen Knauss
St. Joseph, An Episode Of The Economic And Political History Of Florida, Part I, James Owen Knauss
Florida Historical Quarterly
No subject within the wide range of Florida’s history has stirred a greater interest than St. Joseph. Because of its quick rise to importance, its still more rapid decline, and the double tragedy of its extinction, an aspect of romance has settled upon the dead town, heightened through tradition and a haze of unreality engendered by the lack of definite records of its life. Dr. Knauss, searching out and bringing together these scanty records, gives us a light, for the first time, to penetrate that mist.

The Society's Relics - I. The Bell Of A Florida Spanish Mission, Emma Rochelle Williams
The Society's Relics - I. The Bell Of A Florida Spanish Mission, Emma Rochelle Williams
Florida Historical Quarterly
In the museum of the Florida Historical Society, at 7 West Forsyth Street, Jacksonville, there is an old bell of Spanish origin which is one of the very few existing relics of the missions established by the Roman Catholic church in colonial days throughout the territory now embraced by the State of Florida. The bell was cast of an alloy of tin, copper, and silver; it is eighteen inches in height, measures four feet around the base, and bears the inscription SANTA MARIA ORA PROBONIS, with the date ANO 1758, and a raised cross composed of twenty-four eight-pointed stars. It …
Notes On Reconstrucion In Tallahassee And Leon County, 1866-1876, Florida Historical Society
Notes On Reconstrucion In Tallahassee And Leon County, 1866-1876, Florida Historical Society
Florida Historical Quarterly
The soldiers who came back in 1865 found peace and security at least, and for a time there was business activity in Tallahassee. The nightmare of Reconstruction did not begin at once - not until the United States Army took the reins of government, and that other army of carpet-baggers and camp-followers came from everywhere like buzzards collecting.
Fort King, Frederick Cubberly
Fort King, Frederick Cubberly
Florida Historical Quarterly
Unmarked and almost forgotten the site of Fort King, one of the historic spots of Florida, is to be found three miles east of Ocala. Established about one hundred years ago, the place was for many years the center of affairs concerning the Florida Indians. For many months during the year 1835 news from Fort King was anxiously awaited in Washington by the Administration and to this point the President of the United States and his Secretary of War dispatched many messages, or talks as the Indians described them; and from Fort King came back the reports from the Indian …
The Dade Massacre, Albert Hubbard Roberts
The Dade Massacre, Albert Hubbard Roberts
Florida Historical Quarterly
One who would write again of the Dade massacre, ninety-one years after its occurrence, must forego the expectation of discovering any great wealth of original data, and content himself in the main with the assembling of facts already published, and the elimination of more or less doubtful detail that has crept into former narratives, in an effort to bring into stronger relief a more or less neglected story of the American soldier’s courage and fidelity unto death. Every school-child has been taught the story of the Alamo, a tragedy enacted a scarce two months after the massacre of the Dade …

Henry Perrine, Pioneer Botanist And Horticulturist, Sarah R. W. Palmer
Henry Perrine, Pioneer Botanist And Horticulturist, Sarah R. W. Palmer
Florida Historical Quarterly
In the July issue last, there appeared a hitherto unpublished diary, of Mrs. Hester Perrine Walker, a survivor of the Indian massacre at Indian Key, on August 7, 1840, in which her father, the noted pioneer and botanist, lost his life. This volume of reminiscences, so intensely interesting in its depiction of the daily vicissitudes of pioneer life, graphically climaxed by the tragic occurrence of the massacre, has aroused among its readers a desire for further knowledge of the lifework of this pioneer horticulturist of Florida. Mrs. Sarah R. W. Palmer, of Miami, a grand-daughter of Dr. Perrine, tells of …
The Second Spanish-American War, A. H. Phinney
The Second Spanish-American War, A. H. Phinney
Florida Historical Quarterly
In the January number last there appeared an article by A. H. Phinney relating to the attempted seizure of St. Augustine in the year 1812 by United States troops and gunboats. The article was entitled THE FIRST SPANISH-AMERICAN WAR. The following paper is a resume by the same author of an analogous incident in Florida history - the raid into Florida in the year 1818 by General Andrew Jackson.

John Quincy Adams And Florida, Frederick Cubberly
John Quincy Adams And Florida, Frederick Cubberly
Florida Historical Quarterly
It has been said that the defiant patriotism of John Quincy Adams secured to the United States possession of Florida. It settled, after years of controversy, the long standing differences between Spain and this country. The student of history who takes the trouble to search for details of the many transactions and negotiations that resulted in the Florida provinces coming under the American flag will find that the skillful diplomacy of Adams resulted in settling for all time the sovereignty of Spain on the North American Continent.
Address Of John C. Mcgehee Before The Southern Rights Association Of Madison County, June 7, 1851, John C. Mcgehee
Address Of John C. Mcgehee Before The Southern Rights Association Of Madison County, June 7, 1851, John C. Mcgehee
Florida Historical Quarterly
The high historical importance of this address lies in that ten years later John C. McGehee was elected (by a vote of five to one over several worthy opponents) president of the convention of the people of Florida, convened January 3, 1861, which passed the ordinance of secession. At such a time of stress and strong feeling it would seem that a man must be elected to that position at least as much because of his known opinions and long-held beliefs as for his ability and all other reasons.
