Antarctic nearshore benthic communities are known for their unique richness and diversity of marine invertebrates. Bryozoans, soft corals, tunicates, cnidarians, tunicates, sponges and echinoderms are among the dominant groups of marine invertebrates. All five classes of Echinodermata are represented in nearshore waters of Antarctica, however, brittle stars and sea stars are the most classes. Antarctic echinoderms are important in contributing to carbon cycles and benthic production, as well as playing significant roles as determinants of community structure. To date, no systematic quantitative study has been conducted on the echinoderm fauna in nearshore shallow waters of the Antarctic Peninsula. The present …

Life within the ecological context of a disadvantaged and disordered neighborhood is characterized by daily exposure to chronic stressors which are often outside the realm of control of the individual and have negative consequences for the mental health of its residents and in particular, adolescents Using data from Healthy Passages, a multilevel, multi-method longitudinal study which examines health trajectories of adolescents over a ten year period, this paper examines whether daily exposure to a threatening environment in disadvantaged and disordered neighborhoods lead to depression in young people who are on the verge of adolescence. Daoist Elements In Cai Guo-Qiang's Inopportune And Head On, Kelley Wockenfuss

This thesis explores the Daoist elements in two of contemporary Chinese artist Cai Guo-Qiang's (1957 - ) largest installations to date, Inopportune (2004) and Head On (2006). Comprising multi-media works including gunpowder paintings, simulated animal forms, and firework displays, the two installations explore themes related to the global threat of terrorism in Inopportune and the history of the Berlin Wall in Head On. In exploring these themes, Cai attempts to create a globally accessible dialogue by emphasizing universal elements related to the forces of creation and destruction. The purpose of this dissertation is to examine why people use the Internet for health-related purposes and whether this usage is part of larger pattern of health-promoting behaviors, or health lifestyle. Pierre Bourdieu's concept of habitus provides the key theoretical concept that links health lifestyle theory and the digital inequality framework to explain how socioeconomic status and level of Internet access may contribute to status-specific attitudes and behaviors, or lifestyles. The purpose of this research is to address the Japanese immigration to Peru and Japanese cultural traditions within Peru. It is necessary to note the reasons for emigration and effects of the conditions in Peru. Through the use of various sources, I will study the transition of culture and history of the Japanese community in Peru. Diplomatic relations between Japan and Peru began in 1872 after tensions surrounding the Maria Luz incident. It was not until 1899 that the two countries established a formal relationship. Reconstructing The Southern Populists: Alabama Farmers Before Political Revolt, 1874-1889, Joshua Hodge

The traditional story of the Populist movement begins in 1887 where by the leadership of the Farmers' Alliance, agricultural organizations combined to initiate formal political action on behalf of farmers and laborers alike. But proper understanding of the Populists, this study suggests, must begin earlier, in the fluid era of Reconstruction when farmers first began to articulate their concerns and grapple with possible solutions. This study explores earlier manifestations of farmer solidarity, describing the community of like-minded farmers that organized into agricultural groups in the immediate post-Civil War period. Rituals Of Resistance In Contemporary Latino Fiction: Queering Masculinity, Matrimony, And Motherhood In The Works Of Junot DãAz And Nicholasa Mohr, Ana Maria Santiago

This thesis examines the processes of gendering and sexing as seen in the short fiction of contemporary Latino authors Junot DÃaz and Nicholasa Mohr, and focuses especially on how the ideological constructions of gender and sexuality, particularly those of machismo, maternity, and marriage, interact with notions of nationality, ethnicity, race, and class. The stories in DÃaz's Drown and Mohr's Rituals of Survival and In Nueva York illuminate the mechanics of these ongoing, complex ideological processes, revealing the crucial role gendering and sexing play in forming and regulating a working-class, U.S. Latino body. Development And Characterization Of Thermal Diffusion Doped Fe2+:Znse/Zns Polycrystalline Gain Media For Room Temperature Mid-Ir Lasing, Nosoung Myoung

The dissertation is focused on thermo-diffusion doping of Fe2+:ZnSe, Fe2+:ZnS, Fe2+:Co2+:ZnSe, and Fe2+:Co2+:ZnS polycrystals and their laser-spectroscopic characterization. Most materials absorb infrared (IR) light at specific patterns of frequencies directly related to their structure. IR spectra can therefore be used to identify and quantify the constituents of an unknown material, making detection of chemicals by their absorption of IR light an important analytical tool. For instance, Mid-infrared lasers (ë = 3 to 5µm) are widely used for an environmental monitoring, remote sensing of atmosphere and defense-related applications.
