The Decline In Attendance At Local Churches In Queens, New York: A Biblically Based Strategic Revitalization Plan To Bring Local Churches Back To Spiritual Health, Marilyn A. Dolloway

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The decline in church attendance is not a new phenomenon. Historical evidence shows that God has intervened to revitalize and restore the church to a healthy state. Unfortunately, attendance at churches in contemporary times worldwide has declined, as congregations at approximately ninety percent of churches have shrunk. This trend is evident in the United States, where upwards of fifty congregations close their doors permanently each week, resulting in an annual attendance decline of one to two percent. The decline is remarkable in the New York borough of Queens. Churches have been declining for decades, with only fifteen to twenty-five members …

The Interplay Between Language And Culture In J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-Earth, Mackenzie Wangberg Jun 2023

The Interplay Between Language And Culture In J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-Earth, Mackenzie Wangberg

Masters Theses

The construction of detailed languages was a lifelong passion of J.R.R. Tolkien. While creating the world of Middle-earth, he assigned different languages to the various cultures which inhabit this fantasy landscape. He carefully matched languages and cultures to try to elicit particular responses from his audience. It is well known that J.R.R. Tolkien wanted certain languages of Middle-earth to sound beautiful and others to sound ugly. Research so far, however, has not answered why the specific phonemes, or sounds, which Tolkien chose for these languages might cause the specific reactions he intended. I have used Tolkien’s influences to explain why …

Writing As A Mode Of Therapy: The Path To Healing And Selfcare, Lolita Joyce Law

Masters Theses

When someone is plunging into a deep depression, they may not know what to do with the next moment in their lives. All they do know is that they would like the pain to stop. There are many modes of therapy used to assist people with healing. However, writing for many has the most rewards. It is an expression that allows the individual writing to dig much deeper than any spoken word could allow. Writing can help clear, evaluate, and purge the mind of negative thoughts before it leads to action. Poetry, journaling, and songwriting are just a few methods …

Saving The Superheroes, Jeffrey Lawrence Nickles May 2023

Saving The Superheroes, Jeffrey Lawrence Nickles

Masters Theses

Normal Man is a screenplay about Freddy, a below-average underdog who changes the world with the power of his positive thinking. The thesis briefly explores the psychology of how a person’s perceived self-image could stop a highly qualified individual from achieving their dreams, while an underqualified person with a positive self-image can go on to greatness. Other underdogs are compared against Freddy in order to provide a relatable yet successful protagonist. The Beatitudes from Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount are also analyzed to show how the supposed “backward” attitudes of Christianity can save the day.

Specifically, the outcomes of students learning song texts in their native language/tongue versus songs of a different culture was explored. The differences and commonalities of learning music in various styles were …

We Are Your Epistles: How Christian Writers Communicate The Work Of The Holy Spirit Through The Art Of Spiritual Memoir, Ananda E.G. Peters

Masters Theses

Within the nonfiction genre of memoir lies the spiritual memoir, which emphasizes a divine element at work in the lives of mortal beings. By writing and preserving their stories, our spiritual forebearers left behind relics of encouragement and instruction for future generations. This thesis aims to inspire Christians to continue the tradition of preserving personal stories in written form. This thesis is presented in three parts. The Artist’s Statement explains the author’s connection to this sub-genre of creative writing. The Critical Research essay is …

Christianity Worldview In Fiction Writing: History, Comparison, And Understanding, Stephen Douglas Flynn May 2023

Christianity Worldview In Fiction Writing: History, Comparison, And Understanding, Stephen Douglas Flynn

Masters Theses

In researching this paper, the artist learned a great deal about how fiction and popular genres are tied directly to or at least behind the print. First, the research takes a perfunctory look at how the Christian behaviors and, more or less, common morals create what readers know today as a worldview genre, also known by other names. The worldview seeks to present a protagonist who changes something about their view of the world by the end of the story. The paper goes on to look at the Christian worldview from the perspective of religious leaders. While it may seem …

All Write Already! Writing Across Curricula: An Instructional Tool In Theater And Dance, Lezlie R. Christian

Masters Theses

Whether it was to clean the barracks or check for foreign objects on the flight line, “All-hand-on-deck!” applied to every breathing body on the ship or in the building; rank did not matter. The same concept should apply to all teachers with writing, elective teachers included. To increase literacy and writing in our schools, all-hands-on-deck is necessary. Professional development on how to insert writing can help. If our young scholars are to be effective communicators, literacy in the arts can help. Do not view writing as an enemy, additional content you must teach. Work it as a tool. This project, …

Living The Dream- A Rhetorical Analysis Into The Morgan Wallen Racial Slur Scandal Through William Benoit’S Image Reconstruction Theory, Dylan Joseph Singletary

Masters Theses

Public figures often find themselves in controversies that result in a damaged image. In the field of communication image repair is conducted as a form of crisis communication. William Benoit’s image repair theory views image repair through specific strategies which are mortification, corrective action, denial, evasion of responsibility, and reducing offensiveness. Benoit’s image repair strategies can be found through country music star Morgan Wallen’s rhetoric in his attempts at image repair through the four artifacts. Results of the rhetorical analysis of the artifacts show that image repair strategies work better for certain situations. Benoit’s image theory is supported by Wallen’s …

Hello There: An Integrative Framing Analysis Of The Disney+ Series Obi-Wan Kenobi, Hannah Grace Sawchuck May 2023

Hello There: An Integrative Framing Analysis Of The Disney+ Series Obi-Wan Kenobi, Hannah Grace Sawchuck

Masters Theses

The effective communication of emotions within audio-visual content, such as film, was one of the most important aspects that needed to be considered when creating such content. Within the field of communication, there was a limited amount of research that existed on the communication of emotions in film. This was a problem as such content is becoming more prevalent in society. Knowing how those emotions were created and developed would allow communication scholars to better understand how to effectively elicit emotions from their own audio-visual content. By examining a well-known series, Obi-Wan Kenobi, scholars could see how different aural and …

Utilizing Popular Video Game Music To Teach Basic Rhythms To Beginning Band Students, Erin S. Focht

Masters Theses

Video games have become an increasingly popular form of entertainment and a method of relaxation for all ages which have recently been incorporated into academic subjects such as social studies and science. In addition, music educators are often encouraged to re-examine their teaching strategies to incorporate technology into the music curriculum. Music applications, internet games, and other music programs have been utilized in the general music classroom to assist with note learning and rhythms. However, research investigating the implementation of video game soundtracks in music ensemble classes has not been thoroughly addressed. Questions remain whether student engagement is increased as …

From The Paper To The Stars, Morgan Jefferson Smith May 2023

From The Paper To The Stars, Morgan Jefferson Smith

Masters Theses

The document “From the Paper to the Stars” is a concise Thesis evoking the powerful art of literature. The first section is constructed to a minimal recount of the author's past when the spark for writing began in a preschool classroom, followed by inspiration from great authors (J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis, to name a few) instilling a purpose to write as a commission to the Lord. The critical evaluation showcases the research of certain fiction, or fantasy, is rooted in mythological ideological reputation. However, such a genre is shown to be a tool for Christian writers to illustrate the …

Classical And Musical Theater Vocal Pedagogy For Female Collegiate Singers: An Observation And Study, Christina Kayleen Hoss

Masters Theses

The study of vocal pedagogy in the 21st century has brought much debate among vocal pedagogues, vocal instructors, and singers. The increase in musical genres and commercial music/musical theater programs at the collegiate level has created a new need: voice instructors who can teach outside the classical aesthetic. This study aims to research how collegiate voice professors instruct female collegiate voice students singing both classical and musical theater styles. Focusing specifically on breath management and registration, the study intends to open the discussion on the need for consistent pedagogical techniques for cross-genre teaching. Due to different pedagogical beliefs taught among …

Masters Theses

The purpose of this applied research study was to identify a selection of works for flute that were composed in response to circumstances of civil unrest to discover how the composers utilized the flute as a medium for expression, and to study the compositional techniques used to communicate with the performer. These techniques were explored and demonstrated in a lecture recital. The Effects Of Growth Mindset Strategies On The Rhythmic Notation Comprehension And Personal Musical Self-Efficacy Perceptions Of High School Instrumentalists, Frederick Conrad Krieger May 2023

The Effects Of Growth Mindset Strategies On The Rhythmic Notation Comprehension And Personal Musical Self-Efficacy Perceptions Of High School Instrumentalists, Frederick Conrad Krieger

Masters Theses

Despite the depth of research in general education and music education teaching methods as well as an implied overlap in these concepts, there is little research directly linking methodology and strategies across these content areas. More specifically, the benefit and implementation of growth-mindset instruction is considered best practice in the general education classroom but is rarely discussed in the context of the performing ensemble. Consistency in educational methods between content areas is critical because it unifies each into a single education process and promotes lifelong learning that will extend into other areas and beyond the classroom. This study will explore …

God In The Dock: From Theory To Experience, The Odyssey Of The Theodicy Of C.S. Lewis, Anthony Vance Halford May 2023

God In The Dock: From Theory To Experience, The Odyssey Of The Theodicy Of C.S. Lewis, Anthony Vance Halford

Masters Theses

Problems, for us as humans, can be seen to as a moving target. There are two concerns that immediately come to the forefront. Those concerns are as follows: who defines the problem and how do they define the problem. Answering these two questions provides the direction for answering the next concern. And that concern then turns to how does one solve the problem? For solving a problem involves defining if there is a problem and can it be solved. Quite possibly the most confounding and complex problem to face humanity as a whole and Christianity specifically is the problem of …

Genesis 9:6: The Noahic Covenant And The Divine Blood Redeemer, Seth Kenan Pryor May 2023

Genesis 9:6: The Noahic Covenant And The Divine Blood Redeemer, Seth Kenan Pryor

Masters Theses

This thesis analyzes Gen 9:6 and its theological context in Genesis to determine the most exact interpretation of this passage. Chapter one focuses on an exegesis of Gen 9:1-7, arguing for a beth pretii (price or exchange) in Gen 9:6a. This argument is based on an accumulative analysis that considers overarching themes, lack of details, speech patterns, statistics, parallels, and structure. The conclusion is that v.5 presents God as the investigator and reckoner of bloodguilt, v.6a establishes a new principle of justice, and v.6b provides the theological rationale for a serious punishment. Chapter two places Gen 9:1-7 within its theological …

The Music Of Democratic Kampuchea: Revolution Songs As Public Pedagogy, Anissa Jade Lesh May 2023

The Music Of Democratic Kampuchea: Revolution Songs As Public Pedagogy, Anissa Jade Lesh

Masters Theses

The Communist Party of Kampuchea (CPK) which ruled Cambodia from 1975 to 1979 utilized a variety of methods to ensure control over the country and its people. Among these methods were the creation and dissemination of revolutionary songs which extolled the virtues of the CPK, instilled fear, and provided explicit instructions on how to serve the Ângka (the organization). While scholars unanimously recognize the use of music as public pedagogy during the regime, there are very few works which explore the songs, their lyrics, or how the music itself reflected their intended sociopolitical purpose. Through the transcription, translation, and analysis …

The Atheistic Problem Of Good, Bruce Leroy Davis May 2023

The Atheistic Problem Of Good, Bruce Leroy Davis

Masters Theses

The purpose of this work is to bring attention to goods in philosophical and theological circles. More precisely this thesis argues for the atheistic problem of good. The problem of good comes as a byproduct of the problem of evil. The argument seeks to show that if the atheist insists on holding to an understanding that evil exists and is problematic for theism, then the same can be stated in the reverse. The atheist will need to deal with their problem of good because if evil exists, necessarily so does good, in at least the same abundance as evils. The …

Money People: An Examination Of Wealthy Characters In Fiction, Morgan (Yeatts) Eley May 2023

Money People: An Examination Of Wealthy Characters In Fiction, Morgan (Yeatts) Eley

Masters Theses

This thesis seeks to examine the similarities (or dissimilarities) of wealthy characters in fiction, specifically studying two well-known wealthy characters: Mr. Darcy from Pride and Prejudice and Jay Gatsby from The Great Gatsby. The study examined the first impressions of these characters, their attitudes toward others, their physicalities and presences, and how they spent their money. These examinations yielded fairly similar results between the two characters, as discussed in depth within the thesis. The most obvious similarity was the way the authors wrote their characters in a “set apart” manner, creating a division between them and the other characters. While …

Beyond The Long Walk: Appealing To A Target Audience Through Genre Choice And Manuscript Length, Stacie Ann Sudkamp May 2023

Beyond The Long Walk: Appealing To A Target Audience Through Genre Choice And Manuscript Length, Stacie Ann Sudkamp

Masters Theses

Creatively writing specifically for a narrow target audience has not historically been the modus operandi of most authors. The usual recommendation has been to allow a story’s characters to determine plot direction, story length, and genre. My Artist Statement explains my motivation for creating a manuscript that appeals, specifically, to servicemembers and veterans coping with PTSD and suicidal ideation. Furthermore, the research expanded upon in my Critical Paper supports my decision to create a hybrid, or mixed genre, novella in order to capture and hold the attention of my target audience in a unique way. I accomplish this by first …

The purpose of this study is threefold and involves looking across the disciplines of literary theory and criticism, hermeneutics, exegesis, and theology in the analysis of biblical literature. In the areas of literary theory and criticism this involves looking at poetics, modern linguistic theory, structuralist criticism, mimetic theory, and the elements of narrative storytelling. For hermeneutics we will measure how one might best interpret a story comparing the differences between text-centered, reader-centered, and author-centered approaches. Regarding exegesis we will advance an argument for the adoption of the grammatical-historical method over any other. This will allow us to make a case …

The Historical And Modern Significance Of The Choctaw Hymnody, Angela M. Boatner May 2023

The Historical And Modern Significance Of The Choctaw Hymnody, Angela M. Boatner

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Working with the Native Choctaw populations of early America, missionaries did much in the way of music and composition. One result was a compilation of original hymns written by English missionaries in the native Choctaw tongue, but there were also Choctaw composers and contributions. Singing these hymns in church services, gatherings, and social situations remains an activity where the Oklahoma and Mississippi tribal members participate today. The recorded history of the known hymns and composers is scarce and is disappearing daily in favor of teaching the ancient cultures rather than the religion of the white colonists. The research chose a …

The Effects Of Socioeconomic Status And Administrator Support On Middle School All-County Chorus Selections, Celeste Rae Cruz May 2023

The Effects Of Socioeconomic Status And Administrator Support On Middle School All-County Chorus Selections, Celeste Rae Cruz

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Achieving equal opportunity in vocal music instruction for middle school students in their classrooms is possible. Unequal practices can occur for middle school choral students who live in low socioeconomic areas. Students in middle or high socioeconomic areas can frequently take private music instruction and receive instruction from their public-school music teacher. Students with private music instruction may be selected for the All-County festival selections over students who cannot afford private music instruction. Student selections for all-county are based on ranking according to NYSSMA scores. Therefore, students from middle and high socioeconomic areas can rank higher than those who do …

This explanatory sequential mixed methods design study examined strategies regarding community engagement and SEL for recruiting and retaining middle school instrumental music education students. Perspectives on community engagement and SEL benefiting recruitment and retention of middle school band students emerged. Research revealed a connection …
