Preaching: A Ministry Of Newness, Gregory A. Smith Aug 2000

Preaching: A Ministry Of Newness, Gregory A. Smith

Faculty Publications and Presentations

The message of the New Testament draws heavily on the concepts of newness and renewal. Nearly three dozen New Testament passages discuss “new” things—new wine, new commandment, new creation, new song and new Jerusalem, to name a few. The imagery of newness occurs in narrative, didactic and apocalyptic literature and is used by every New Testament author except James and Jude. Not only does the biblical concept of newness provide a useful paradigm for interpreting New Testament theology, but it also outlines the contours of the task of preaching. Preaching is the proclamation of a new message for the purpose …

The New Fabrica, Alan L. Gillen

Two thousand years after the writing of Psalm 139, Andreas Vesalius (Figure 1) began to unlock the mysteries of the human body. When Vesalius was born in Brussels in 1514, no one could have foreseen that anatomy would be changed forever. During Vesalius’ time, the teachings of the Greek physician Claudius Galen (130-201 A. D.) were the ultimate authority on anatomy. Because Galen had dissected very few (if any) human cadavers, his anatomical descriptions were limited to animal dissections. Galen’s works contained many errors because his conclusions regarding human body functions were based on data obtained from nonhuman animals. Vesalius …

Wisdom In The Inward Parts, Alan L. Gillen, Inis Bardella

Faculty Publications and Presentations

We wrote The Human Body: An Intelligent Design (Gillen et al. 1999) to help readers understand physiological principles in the human body from a creation perspective. The majority of biology and physiology textbooks bring an evolutionary perspective. Very few books and articles discuss a creation perspective on human anatomy and physiology.

I (ALG) have now written a second book (Gillen, 2000) entitled Body by Design: The Anatomy and Physiology of the Human Body, that emphasizes historical and anatomical evidences for a creationbased science of the human body. Both books have been written to fill this gap in the literature on …

Evaluating Employee Performance: Insights From The Churches In Revelation 2-3, Gregory A. Smith

Faculty Publications and Presentations

One of the most significant biblical passages bearing on the issue of evaluation is Revelation 2-3, where the risen Christ assesses the spiritual performance of the churches of Asia. It is the purpose of this article to discuss four principles of evaluation that are clearly visible in Christ’s letters to these churches.

• Effective evaluation is based on accurate information

• Effective evaluation recognizes both positive and negative performance

• Effective evaluation increases awareness of accountability

• Effective evaluation provides incentives for improved performance

Pastors and church administrators would do well to observe these guidelines when assessing their subordinates’ performance.
