During the American Civil War, one of the Confederate army's elite units was the Texas Brigade. Commanded by John Bell Hood in 1862-1863, the unit distinguished itself in the battles of the Eastern Theater as part of the Army of Northern Virginia. In the fall of 1863, the brigade was part of the corps commanded by James Longstreet deployed to northern Georgia to reinforce the Army of Tennessee. In the years immediately preceding the Civil War, the state of Maryland appeared to be doing away with slavery at a slow but steady pace. However, an examination of the data at the county level shows a significantly larger population of slaves in the southern and eastern parts of Maryland. While this is well-known, the number of slaves in the top five tobacco producing counties (what I call the Big Five) fluctuated slightly in the years leading up to the war. Understanding the day-to-day life of prisoners of war is crucial to understanding their experience. This study focuses on the experience of Union POWs as they struggled with extreme levels of physical deprivation, psychological abuse, and brutal treatment at the hands of guards and, in some cases, fellow prisoners. They often coped through engagement in everyday activities such as letter-writing, Bible-reading, playing sports, and other means.In the process, these survivors formed a strong bond that enabled them to endure these difficult conditions.

Her account was later supplemented by another author and narrator. The account also includes details about Felicity, a slave girl who was arrested with Perpetua. While Felicity is included in Perpetua’s story, most of the information about them focuses on Perpetua. However, they have mostly focused on larger railroads like the Pennsylvania Railroad and the Philadelphia & Reading Railroad (Reading). Smaller railroads like the Cornwall Railroad and the Cornwall & Lebanon Railroad are less well known but play an important part in that larger story.
