Fundamental Inconsistencies In The Theories Postulating A Cuneiform Origin Of The Biblical Creation Record, Henry J. Kleindienst
Fundamental Inconsistencies In The Theories Postulating A Cuneiform Origin Of The Biblical Creation Record, Henry J. Kleindienst
Bachelor of Divinity
The purpose of this paper then shall be to consider the claims raised by those who believe that the Cuneiform tablets form the basis of these stories, to show the weaknesses of these theories, and to advance the positive reasons why the Genesis account is not dependent on any cuneiform original. We shall first treat of the Sumerian tablets for they are older in point of time, and then devote the major portion of the paper to the Babylonian tablets and restrict it to the so-called Enuma Elish.

Life After Death, With Especial Stress On The Teachings Of Spiritism, Russellism, And Christian Science, Theo W. Brust
Life After Death, With Especial Stress On The Teachings Of Spiritism, Russellism, And Christian Science, Theo W. Brust
Bachelor of Divinity
There is no subject that has more persistently occupied the mind of man than that of his state in the future world. A true understanding of this question involves man's happiness not only hereafter, but also here. It implies, of course, an "after death", or that death does not end all.
The Attitude Of The Lutheran Church Of The 16th And 17th Centuries Towards Missions, Herbert H. Umbach
The Attitude Of The Lutheran Church Of The 16th And 17th Centuries Towards Missions, Herbert H. Umbach
Bachelor of Divinity
In this thesis it shall be our aim to see on the basis of the facts at hand what really was the sentiment of the 16th and l7th. century Lutheran Church as regards the sphere of missions. And of course, in the treatment of a subject like this, aiming at a presentation of historic facts, there is but little room for originality. I have not, therefore, sought so much to be original as to be truthful, and have endeavored to gather from every accessible source all such historic data as tended to establish the object in view. The old principle …
Public Opinion In Germany On The Papacy And The Hierarchy During The Fourteenth Century And The Early Conciliar Period, R Nordsieck
Bachelor of Divinity
A thorough understanding of public opinion on the medieval ecclesiastical system is of great importance for the proper interpretation of the events leading up to the Reformation. The necessity of this becomes more apparent when we consider the vital position of the Church in the medieval system and the direct and immediate bearing it had on the daily pursuits, welfare, and happiness of the peoples of Western Europe not only as members of the Church, the Alleinseligmachende, but also as subjects of actual or, at least, theoretical feudal fiefs of the Apostolic See.
The Divine Call Of The Christian Minister, W F. Bruening
The Divine Call Of The Christian Minister, W F. Bruening
Bachelor of Divinity
Why could Paul tell Timothy, "If a man desire the office of a bishop he desireth a good work"? There must be a very good reason why he mentions this office as especially desirable in preference to other honorable vocations. Indeed, he did have a good reason, for Paul is not here voicing his own personal opinion, but he is writing what the Holy Spirit prompted him to say. It is God himself who is here speaking. It is He who shows us in in His Word why this office is of such great value and consequently to be desired.
The Virgin Birth Of Christ, Edgar Reinhold Pflug
The Virgin Birth Of Christ, Edgar Reinhold Pflug
Bachelor of Divinity
It shall be our object to trace the history of the controversy over this doctrine from its very beginnings to the present time; to state briefly and to refute the arguments of the opposition; and finally to search out the true Biblical version of the Lord’s birth, of which we are confident that it will also be the view upheld by the Lutheran Church from its very inception.
The Idea Of God In 20th Century Philosophy, Frederick C. Stein
The Idea Of God In 20th Century Philosophy, Frederick C. Stein
Bachelor of Divinity
What a hodge-podge! What god-makers our 20th century philosophers are! When revealed religion is condemned to the rubbish heap and modem philosophes relie solely upon their intellect, senses, experiences, nature, etc., what unimaginable and ofttimes unintelligible ideas of God do they not create for themselves. We are inclined to exclaim with Pyrrho, who lived 365 before the time of Christ or twenty years after the birth of Aristotle, “There are no two schools of philosophy that agree upon the essential problems. Speculation brings us only trouble and uncertainty and involves us in endless contradiction. Abandon barren speculation and - instead …
Liturgies And Hymnology In The American Lutheran Church Until 1820, H W. Romoser
Liturgies And Hymnology In The American Lutheran Church Until 1820, H W. Romoser
Bachelor of Divinity
In the analysis and consideration of any liturgical form or group of liturgies the student must from the beginning set down for himself certain principles and accepted norms of judgment to guide him in such study and to form for him a definite, logical and true basis for comparison and evaluation of the material treated.
The Geography Of The Psalms, Alexander Heidel
The Geography Of The Psalms, Alexander Heidel
Bachelor of Divinity
This, however, is an entirely wrong conception. And it is the first object of this paper to show that the O. T. people by no means possessed such a limited knowledge of geography, but, on the contrary, were acquainted with a surprisingly large part of the known world. We shall not avail ourselves of all the different places and peoples mentioned in the various books of the O .T., but we shall rather confine ourselves to one book of the O.T. Scripture, and that is not even historical, much less geographical, but a devotional book, the hymnal and prayer book …

The Apostolic Succession Of The Episcopal Church, W Poehler
The Apostolic Succession Of The Episcopal Church, W Poehler
Bachelor of Divinity
"By this term (Apostolic Succession) is understood the claim made by most episcopally ordained clergymen and bishops (Anglican, Syrian, and Catholic churches) that they constitute links in an uninterrupted chain of similarly ordained persons, the first of whom were ordained by the apostles themselves. With this opinion is combined the view that only clergymen who are in the line of this spiritual succession are entitled to a pastoral office in the Christian Church, and that all others usurp the functions of the ministry….. the authoritatively commissioned minister is the proper divine instrumentality through which Christ, the exalted invisible Head of …

The Synonymns Of Conversion, W H. Mclaughlin
The Synonymns Of Conversion, W H. Mclaughlin
Bachelor of Divinity
The over-systematization tendency in theology has had many sad consequences. Among these are not only the perverted harmonization efforts, which in the doctrine of election have led to the Calvinistic and the synergistic solutions of the “Cur alii prae aliis?" dilemma, and in the doctrine of justification have resulted in a lamentable confounding of Law and Gospel in quest of a "higher harmony”, but also certain subtly scholastic unscriptural distinctions which discriminate between the effect of the preached and of the written Word, endeavor to establish a different working for each of the sacraments, and have also borne fruit in …
Roman Judicial Procedure With Reference To The Trial Of Jesus Christ, A C. Hahn
Roman Judicial Procedure With Reference To The Trial Of Jesus Christ, A C. Hahn
Bachelor of Divinity
A concession of the greatest importance was this, that the Sanhedrin was permitted to continue and exercise its power in the internal government of Jewish affairs. In the days of Jesus, the Sanhedrin had legislative, executive, and judicial powers. It commanded a body of police for the purpose of making arrests, (Mat 26,47; Mark 14,43). It had the power to prefer charges and try cases of a religious nature, in which the procurator would not meddle. From its decision there could be no appeal; it was the highest court. In connection with the Great Sanhderin, there was an organized system …
Lessons To Be Learnt From The History And Development Of The Halle-Leipzig Mission In India, H Earl Miller
Lessons To Be Learnt From The History And Development Of The Halle-Leipzig Mission In India, H Earl Miller
Bachelor of Divinity
We may, without doing violence to truth, speak of the unbroken continuity of the Halle-Leipzig mission from the days of Ziegenbalg down to the present time, a period of 222 years. In more than one respect, this mission has been the outstanding force in the history of missionary endeavor in India, and we may well expect to profit from an examination of its history and development.
The Christ Of St. John's Gospel, Leonard W. Koehler
The Christ Of St. John's Gospel, Leonard W. Koehler
Bachelor of Divinity
The purpose in writing this treatise on the Christ in St. John's Gospel is most ably expressed by the Beloved Disciple himself when he says in his gospel 20,31, "But these things are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God.” Jesus did so many things outside of those recorded in the gospels that John says, "I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that should be written", 21,25. Therefore, with the help of God, the present writer, too, shall try to briefly show from this one gospel that Jesus, …
Speeches In The Book Of Acts, C C. Nieman
Speeches In The Book Of Acts, C C. Nieman
Bachelor of Divinity
While a discussion or the isagogical questions of Acts does not belong into the sphere of this treatise properly, we will find that a consideration of the most pertinent questions in the field will be helpful and explanatory of various phrases which will be used. We will, however, limit ourselves to only a few of the most important and evident questions, lest we stray to far afield. Again, let me add, that no arguments pro and con will be advanced, but only the results and conclusions of the most eminent scholars in the field will be presented, in order to …
The Kingly Office Of Christ In The Old Testament, Clarence Peters
The Kingly Office Of Christ In The Old Testament, Clarence Peters

In the words of Luther's Small Catechism “the kingly office of Christ consists in this, that he mightily rules over all creatures, and especially governs and protects His Church, and finally leads it to glory.
The Natural Law And The Natural Knowledge Of God And Their Relation To Conscience, Richard R. Caemmerer
The Natural Law And The Natural Knowledge Of God And Their Relation To Conscience, Richard R. Caemmerer

A study of the phenomenon of conscience reveals the existence of a rational and emotional reaction as the normal component of man, forcing him to evaluation of every act performed or conceived of as performed., according to the dictates of acknowledged ethical. standards.
The Doctrine Of Christ In The Apocalypse, Walter Ellwanger
The Doctrine Of Christ In The Apocalypse, Walter Ellwanger
Bachelor of Divinity
More have been led astray by vagaries and false notions received from the Apocalypse of Saint John than from any other book of the Bible. Luther wrote four centuries ago: "Es haben wohl viel sich daran versucht, aber bis auf den heutigen Tag nichts Gewisees aufbracht, etliche viel ungeschicktes Dinges aus ihren Kopf hineingebraeuet." (Vol. XIV, 130.) This warning applies today, and most certainly all who attempt to write anything on such a marvellous book as this have in common the feeling of trepidation and incapacity for such a task. It is evident that mysteries, problems, and difficulties will always …

The Conception Of God In Modern Philosophy: A Presentation Of The Views Of Josiah Royce, Henri Bergson, William James And H.G. Wells, H A. Basilius
Bachelor of Divinity
In defining the scope of our paper, we have tried to hold before us several very general objectives. In accordance with our thesis we shall, of course, treat the religious speculations of the above named philosophers. We shall nevertheless also show the roots of the respective systems from which these speculations take their source. We shall also attempt to show the endeavors of harmonizing-if the expression may be pardoned-religio-philosophic thought with the substrata of revealed religion together with the fact of and cause for the inevitable failure of such attempts. And finally, we hope to point out on the basis …
Church Polity Up To 325 A.D. With Special Reference To The Apostolic Succession, Hugo Ness
Church Polity Up To 325 A.D. With Special Reference To The Apostolic Succession, Hugo Ness
Bachelor of Divinity
Differences in church organization today are directly proportional to the differences in doctrine. As the actions of a man are bit the result of his beliefs we are justified in ascertaining his tenets by observing his actions. But in any system of church organization the arrangement should be that by which the motive principle, i.e, faith, reaches its maximum of efficiency. And here, if anywhere, the doctrine lends the distinctive mark to the organization. Thus, if fault is to be found, the root of the evil lies in false doctrine. And yet, to argue Church Polity on the grounds of …
