The Contacts Of The Book Of Acts With Roman Political Lnstitutions (Concluded), H O. Keinath Mar 1930

The Contacts Of The Book Of Acts With Roman Political Lnstitutions (Concluded), H O. Keinath

Concordia Theological Monthly

The next contact with Roman political institutions is established in Macedonia, where the occasion of a riot and the subsequent arrest and imprisonment of the Apostle Paul bring out a number of remarks based on existing Roman statecraft. •The event was briefly this: Paul and Silas came to a city called Philippi, in the Macedonian province. In the pursuit of their activity, Paul cast out an evil spirit, from a girl. The owners of this girl, who had gained a considerable income from her mysterious power, find their source of gain cut off and at once proceed to be avenged …

The Eucharist between 30 and 325 A. D. It was in the year 30 A. D., on the evening of the fourteenth of Nisan, corresponding roughly to one of the last days of our March. On this first day of Unleavened Bread, Jesus, responding to a reminder on the part of Hie disciples, exercised the functions of the head of the household or family in sending Peter and John to make ready the Passover for the evening celebration. Mark 14, 12. 13; Matt. 26, 17-19; Luke 22, 7 ff. The room where the Lord celebrated the Passover with His disciples …

We now turn to the discussion of those effects of the divine indwelling that are worked in the Christian's life. That life is bound up in the one word salvation,, and salvation comes through the illumination of tl1e soul with spiritual "knowledge. Christ's own anointing with the Holy Spirit, according to Isaiah, was to be an anointing with " the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and of the · fear of the Lord." Is. 11, 2. Now, this same Spirit of wisdom and understanding and heavenly knowledge dwells in our …

Does The Bible Claim Infallible Authority For All Its Parts?, Th Engelder

Concordia Theological Monthly

It is most heartening to the Bible Christian to see what flimsy arguments modern theology employs to justify its rejection of the Bible as the supreme authority. A paragraph in C.H. Dodd's book The Authority of the Bible, p. 15, may serve as an example. This spokesman of modem theology has well served the cause of the Bible by penning these words: - "The Bible itself does not make any claim to infallible authority for all its parts.”

A thorough study of this text, the Eisenach Epistle-lesson. for Septuageaima, will confirm the impression received by a casual reading of the words that their import is an exhortation of the Apostle Paul to the congregation at Philippi to remain steadfast in the faith of the Gospel and united in spirit, in spite of all hindrances that might come from without or within. It will be found quite convenient to group the various items found in the text under any, theme which express the above thought.

When the Christian Church began to spread, its field of expansion was practically prepared in the territorial extent of the Roman Empire. Beginning at Jerusalem, the Church rapidly extended its borders beyond this city; it embraced all Palestine and the neighboring lands of Syria, Asia minor, and Egypt and soon had crossed into Macedonia and Achaia. Jerusalem did not remain the geographical center of the Christian Church very long; this city very soon found itself on the eastern extremity of church territory, just u it was situated near the eastern extremity of the Roman Empire. A map of church territory …

Sermon On Newton's Hymn For New Year's Eve, W G. Polack Jan 1930

Sermon On Newton's Hymn For New Year's Eve, W G. Polack

Concordia Theological Monthly

Many thoughts crowd our hearts to-night. We think of the past year, and the multifarious events of another stage of our life's pilgrimage flit: rapidly across the screen of memory. We think of the coming year and speculate as to what may lie in store for us behind the dark and impenetrable curtain of the future. Such thoughts come to Christian and worldling alike. But while the worldling plunges himself into an orgy of pleasure at this time, the Christian turns to serious meditation.

That is what you have come here to do. To that end I have chosen for …

The indwelling of the Holy Trinity in tl1e heart of the believer is an article of Christian faith. We do not miaundorstand the attitude of our own time toward the discussion of articles of doctrine. Miracles And Natural Law, Charles C. Nieman Jun 1929

Miracles And Natural Law, Charles C. Nieman

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The purpose of this investigation, aside from academical requirements, which it is an attempt to fill, is to show that the position of the orthodox interpreters of Scriptures, especially in connection with the questions of the miraculous, is not unwarranted or ungrounded.
