The seventh chapter of Paul’s First Letter to the Corinthians contains various instructions regarding marriage, all of which apparently were given in answer to questions proposed to the apostle by the congregation. After having discussed the question whether it were better to marry or to remain unmarried, the apostle turns his attention to such as have either before or after their conversion been married. He distinguishes two classes: such marriages in which both spouses are believers and such in which one spouse is a believer, the other an unbeliever. Melito, bishop of Sardis, in a letter presented to Aurelius, called Christianity "the philosophy which began under Augustus." (Eusebius, IV, 26.) The narrative about the persecution in Gaul under Marcus Aurelius, in V, is among the most important in the Church History of the bishop of Caesarea, untainted by the flattery of his later references to Constantine.
