There are three denominations (using the term in it popular connotation) which are properly designated liturgical. This means that they have liturgy, a service of sacramental and sacrificial material in which both the officiating minister, clergymen, or priest and the congregation join, including responsive or antiphonal chanting of a more or less elaborate kind. But it is not generally known, or at least it is not correctly understood by many, that of the three liturgical denominations only the Lutheran Church has caught and preserved the spirit of the ancient liturgy, that of the apostolic and subapostolic ages.

The theme of the sermon is a proposition, or a statement, expressed in a few words. Yet Phelps, in his book of well-nigh six hundred pages, The Theory of Preaching, devotes eighty-two pages (pp. 282-364:) to a discussion of the proposition, or the theme, of the sermon: its definition, necessity, substance, and form. Why? Because of the importance of the sermon theme. The theme is the sermon in nuce; the sermon is the theme unfolded, or developed.

The Authorized Version translates: "For it pleased the Father that in Him should all fullness dwell," while the Revised Version renders it: "For it was the good pleasure of the Father that in Him should all the fulness dwell.''

Whom has “it pleased"? This is not expressly stated in this verse if one translates as does the Authorized Version, the Revised Version, the Vulgate, and Luther.

This article contemplates no detailed historical analysis of the movement) but would treat it as of 1933, reserving a more complete discussion for a later issue, if it shall be deemed necessary.

A number of factors have combined to make a short article on the probability of Christian interpolations in Josephus, especially in his Antiquities of the Jews, desirable. The brunt of the assault on the Old Testament is directed not so much against its language or its history as ultimately against its theology. While the Scriptures of the Old Covenant (Ex.17, 14; Deut. 31, 9; etc.) claim to be products of a direct and divine revelation and are thus acknowledged by our Lord Himself and by His apostles (2 Tim. 3, 16), it has become the avowed objective of criticism to remove any distinguishing criteria of the divine and to eliminate the conception of any direct and exclusive revelation on which Israel's religion is based.
