The Westminster Assembly, the body which formulated the chief Confession of the Presbyterians, was called into being by an ordinance of Parliament, June 12, 1643, for the avowed purpose of establishing a form of church government, "most agreeable to God's Holy Word, and most apt to procure and preserve the peace of the Church at home, and nearer agreement with the Church of Scotland, and other Reformed Churches abroad." His ministerial training he received at Concordia College, Fort Wayne, and at Concordia Seminary, St. Louis. After a pastorate at Frankenmuth, Mich., from 1885 to 1893, he served on the faculty of Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, for a period of fifty years. The year 1947 marks the centennial of the death of Dr. Thomas Chalmers, perhaps the greatest man that Scotland ever produced. His life and his conflict with a corrupt State Church offer many striking parallels with that of Dr. Walther of our own Synod. Moreover, religious conditions in Scotland a little over a century ago were of such a nature that one needs only to change names and a few details in order to have a picture of religious conditions in Germany just before the Saxon emigration to America.

The status of the Negro in America is rapidly changing. Our Church's work among the colored people is no more a foreign work in the deep South. Soon many Negro churches, also of our Synod, will no longer be subsidized. The economic opportunities of the Negro are being increasingly protected by law and sentiment. The sociological trends of our times emphasize the elimination of ghettos. "Without distinction of race, creed, or color'' is one of the many American shibboleths. People with Negro features are filtering into every phase of our social structure.

The purpose of the writer's original investigation was to find out what influences and connections existed between the two Reformations. The purpose of this study is to show that before Henry VIII English efforts at union were almost wholly political. At least there is no mention of religious-political parties. War and conciliation were the diplomatic weapons. After Henry's break with the Pope by the Act of Supremacy in 1534 and to 1707 when the final union of the crowns took place political and religious relations became closely entwined. Lutheran hymnals continue to increase in size and in choice of hymn tunes. A brief study of The Lutheran Hymnal (1941) of the Missouri Synod shows that the composers of the 380 tunes of the hymnal come in the main from three countries: 18 from America, 59 from England, and 58 from Germany. This trend is borne out in the other Lutheran hymnals published in America during the first 40 years of this century, to perhaps an even more marked degree.
