The New Creation In Christ, Walter Bartling
The New Creation In Christ, Walter Bartling
Concordia Theological Monthly
All modern studies of the ἐν χοιστψ̄ formula take as their starting point the fascinating dissertation of Adolf Deissmann, which appeared in 1892. It is hardly possible to overestimate the influence this book has had upon research in Pauline theology. Deissmann's basic conclusion, that the ἐν of the formula has throughout a local significance, rests, no doubt, upon a proper grammatical insight and has received but slight modification by later scholars.

Study On 1 Timothy 1:3-11, Otto E. Sohn
Concordia Theological Monthly
Late in his career, in the early sixties, the Apostle Paul was able to carry out his projected visit to Asia and Macedonia (Philem. 22 and Phil. 1:25; 2:24), at which time he doubtless visited Crete, leaving Titus behind to supply the churches with pastors (Titus 1:5). Likewise he met with Timothy in Ephesus, upon whom he also prevailed not to accompany him to Macedonia, since evil forces were threatening to wreak havoc in the church (1 Cor. 16:9; Eph. 5:16; Acts 19:23 f.). Furthermore, the matter of staffing the churches with pastors and deacons needed attention (1 Tim. 3:1-10, …

The Christian And Government, A. M. Rehwinkel
The Christian And Government, A. M. Rehwinkel
Concordia Theological Monthly
Government is not above the Moral I.aw, but subject to it. In fact, government exists for the maintenance of the moral order. "For he is the minister of God to thee for good; but if thou do that which is evil, be afraid" (Rom.13:4). Governments cannot abrogate the Moral Law nor any of the Commandments of the Decalog. The legislation and administration of law must be in harmony with the Moral Law. Governments are responsible to God. "For he is a minister of God."

The Defensor Pacis Of Marsilius Of Padua And Its Relation To The Reformation, August Bernthal
The Defensor Pacis Of Marsilius Of Padua And Its Relation To The Reformation, August Bernthal
Bachelor of Divinity
Any event in history that is linked in either a small or large way to the Reformation demands investigation. In examining the causes and the background of the Protestant uprising in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries; historians usually make mention of the Defensor Pacis written by Marsilius of Padua in 1624. Some make much of it. Others ignore it. Yet the Defensor Pacis, directed as it is against Pope John XXII, remains the most daring and the most independent ecclesiastic-politica1 work of the entire medieval period. Whether this document in any way influences the Reformation this thesis will endeavor to …
The Origin And History Of Indulgences Up To The Time Of The German Reformation With Emphasis On Luther's Attitude Toward Them, Orval M. Oswald
The Origin And History Of Indulgences Up To The Time Of The German Reformation With Emphasis On Luther's Attitude Toward Them, Orval M. Oswald
Bachelor of Divinity
This thesis is being written with the hope of giving a clear and accurate account of the origin and development of the Roman Catholic doctrine of the Indulgence up to the time of the German Reformation, with particular emphasis on the effect it had on the people and Luther’s reasons for opposing it. Entire volumes have been written on the history of indulgences alone, and countless pages on their relationship to Luther' and the Reformation. It is an impossibility to consider all the material written on this subject in a thesis of this sort, but the author feels that he …

The Religious History Of Eastern Pennsylvania During The Colonial Period, Milford C. Brelje
Bachelor of Divinity
The thesis proposes to give a survey of the religious history of eastern Pennsylvania during the colonial period. The scope of the subject presents a difficulty in its very Broadness. Extended perusal of the vast material relating to the subject has shown the writer that he must be satisfied to present at best only an overview.
English Preaching Before The Reformation- A Historical, Structural, And Critical Survey, With An Anthology Of Sermons 950-1550, Theodore John Kleinhans
English Preaching Before The Reformation- A Historical, Structural, And Critical Survey, With An Anthology Of Sermons 950-1550, Theodore John Kleinhans
Bachelor of Divinity
Whatever the reasons for the lack of interest, this thesis intends to examine, evaluate, and summarize the status of early English preaching. It is novel in that it combines a resume of preaching with the actual sermons themselves. Part one explains how the preacher went about making his sermon, and what, when, where, and how he preached; Part Two elaborates these generalizations with specific sermons or excerpts, the headnotes explaining and highlighting the major features of an individual selection.
Emil Brunner's Criticisms Of The Epistemology Of Friedrich Schleiermacher, Hubert Riedel
Emil Brunner's Criticisms Of The Epistemology Of Friedrich Schleiermacher, Hubert Riedel
Bachelor of Divinity
This essay will address itself as its title indicates, to “Brunner's criticisms of the epistemology of Schleiermacher." It will, therefore, deal with Schleiermacher chiefly in terms of Brunner's criticisms of him, and particularly, in terms of the Reden, against which the chief criticisms are directed.
The Logos Concept Of Justin Martyr-Relation To The Person, The Natures, And The States Of Existence Of The Logos, Marcus T. Lang
The Logos Concept Of Justin Martyr-Relation To The Person, The Natures, And The States Of Existence Of The Logos, Marcus T. Lang
Bachelor of Divinity
The main purpose, or course, of' the apologies in general, and of the use or the Logos concept in these apologies in particular, was to present to the unbelieving world a justification for the worship of' Christ by the Christians. Since the Logos concept was a current and accepted one in both the pagan and Jewish world, if it could successfully be identified with the person of Jesus Christ, a great victory would be won. And, to a large degree, that attempt was eventually successful, as Dean Inge points out when he characterizes the Logos-doctrine as "the formula which converted …
The Roman Catholic And Lutheran Doctrine Of Sin, Alfred Frank Volmer
The Roman Catholic And Lutheran Doctrine Of Sin, Alfred Frank Volmer
Bachelor of Divinity
However, while there are apparent similarities, it must be pointed out that the actual similarity or dissimilarity of churches does not consist in their external rites and ceremonies but in their teachings. Therefore, in order to get an accurate picture, it is necessary that we examine the doctrine of each church. However, since we cannot treat all the doctrines we shall take a basic one, namely, the doctrine of sin. The writer will attempt to set forth the official teachings of both churches on this one doctrine.
Research Studies In Religious Education, Louis F. Rush
Research Studies In Religious Education, Louis F. Rush
Bachelor of Divinity
The Lutheran Education Association assumed the task of compiling a bibliography of research studies in religious education to fill the need for such a catalogue. The bibliography, consisting of classified abstracts with index, was compiled especially with the needs of educators of The Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod in mind. It should be suggestive for future research studies in religious education and should serve to prevent duplication of effort as well as to suggest areas of study not previously covered or covered inadequately.

The Kingship Motif In The Near Eastern Cultures And In The Psalms, Albert E. Glock
The Kingship Motif In The Near Eastern Cultures And In The Psalms, Albert E. Glock
Bachelor of Divinity
The problem which is presented, the problem of kingship in the Psalms, is not a theme that rises to the top in the Old Testament with any prominence. Yet it will be noticed that throughout the Near East the king played a decidedly important role in community and national life.
Pastoral Counseling-, Karl A. Tubesing
Pastoral Counseling-, Karl A. Tubesing
Bachelor of Divinity
The purpose and intent of this thesis is not that it be an exhaustive treatise of the subject, which it is not, nor that it be a critical analysis of that which has been written on the subject, but rather that it set forth in clear review certain fundamental and basic definitions and principles of Pastoral Counseling, which when understood, will help to clarify the present seeming confusion. It is the author’s fond hope that in some small way this thesis may help to accomplish this result. To this end this thesis is an attempt to define Pastoral Counseling as …
Paul's Treatment Of Error In Galatians, Frederick C. Hinz
Paul's Treatment Of Error In Galatians, Frederick C. Hinz
Bachelor of Divinity
The purpose of the present writer in this thesis has been to determine just how Paul went about treating and refuting the error. What were his arguments and attitudes over against his converts? His opponents? The error itself? Were his arguments sound and convincing? Does he leave room for compromise? To what degree does he allow his own self to enter the picture? In attempting to answer these questions, the writer has endeavored at all times to maintain objectivity except where a difference of opinion among leading commentators forced him to exercise selectivity. Detailed exegesis has been kept to a …
A Christian Interpretation Of Sex, Richard Scheimann
A Christian Interpretation Of Sex, Richard Scheimann
Bachelor of Divinity
There is a sharp discrepancy between profession and practice in the sex life of the American people. It is commonly said that the philosophy of sexual conduct which has been traditionally held up to the public has been strongly determined by Puritanism. Neither Puritanism nor traditional morals are popular any more.. Especially the “Puritanism” and the morals connected with sexual behavior.

An Analysis Of The Introductions And Conclusions Of C E Macartney's Sermons, Carl A. Streufert
An Analysis Of The Introductions And Conclusions Of C E Macartney's Sermons, Carl A. Streufert
Bachelor of Divinity
This study endeavors to determine whether the introductions and conclusions of c. E. Macartney’s sermons meet the standards of purpose, of variety, of style, of peculiar characteristics as laid down by reputable homileticians and speech critics . By the standard of purpose we mean what the homileticians and speech critics prescribe as the aim and intent of the introduction and conclusion to any sermon or speech. We understand by variety the number of different approaches made to the audience to avoid monotony in the exordiums and perorations used Sunday after Sunday. In the discussion of style, we endeavored to ascertain …
A Study Of The Cross, Harold Krueger
A Study Of The Cross, Harold Krueger
Bachelor of Divinity

An Examination Of The Passages In The New Testament Which Speak Of The Royal Priesthood Of Believers, Norman Brauer
An Examination Of The Passages In The New Testament Which Speak Of The Royal Priesthood Of Believers, Norman Brauer
Bachelor of Divinity
It is the purpose of this thesis to examine the passages of the New Testament which speak of the Royal Priesthood of Believers. Actually, there are only five instances where the Christian priesthood is specifically mentioned. They are I Peter 2:5; I Peter 2:9; Revelation. 1:6; Revelation 5:10; and Revelation 20:6. All other references to priests or priesthood are either to the priestly office of Christ or to Jewish and pagan priests.
The Effects Of Urbanization On The Function Of The Church, David S. Schuller
The Effects Of Urbanization On The Function Of The Church, David S. Schuller
Bachelor of Divinity
The interest in this paper will not be the causes for the rise of urbanism or a study of the social ecology of the city. The emphasis will be on the social relationships in the city. We will ask the question of how these influences in urban areas have affected the function of the church in witnessing.
The Life And Work Of H. C. Schwan As Pastor And Missionary, Everette Meier
The Life And Work Of H. C. Schwan As Pastor And Missionary, Everette Meier
Bachelor of Divinity
The purpose of this thesis is stated in the title, namely, to present as· fully as possible "the life and work of H. C. Schwan as pastor and missionary." The scope of this paper does not permit the very absorbing and significant study of a number of other questions. Such studies would include l) a detailed account of Schwan’s work as member and officer of Synod, 2) an evaluation of his position on the question or unionism, 3) an analysis of his role in the predestinarian controversy with the Ohio Synod, and 4) a comparative and analytic study of Schwan’s …

The Validity Of Conditional Prayer And The Providence Of God, Robert Spieler
The Validity Of Conditional Prayer And The Providence Of God, Robert Spieler
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
The purpose of the present study is to investigate the problem stated towards the end of' establishing unequivocally the fact that conditional prayer is a valid reality in the realm of God's providence. A solution of the problem is, of course, impossible on any other premises except those which are faithful to Scripture. It will be noted how the systems of rational philosophy serve only to establish the impossibility of reconciling the fact of God’s providence with the fact of conditional prayer. According to such systems, the problem is usually solved by denying either the reality of conditional prayer or …
The Geological Implications Of Genesis Ch 1-11, Fred Kramer
The Geological Implications Of Genesis Ch 1-11, Fred Kramer
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
This thesis is written on the premise that God has given man two books from which he may learn to know Him, the book or nature and the Holy Scripture. There can be no contradiction between these two books. Where men have affirmed contradictions between them, e.g., on scientific grounds, they either misinterpreted scientific data or the words or Scripture.
